Flat hitters

Thomas Berdych has a very flat ball. Maybe, to flat for his own good because many times he tends to make a lot of unforced errors but, when he is on he can out power almost any player in the ATP.

Yeah I saw that match Berdych played agains Nadal in Cincy and he was hitting some massive forehands. Nadal's ball was landing right in his strike zone. Safin can hit pretty flat forehands at times too.

Hrbaty. Unbelievable flat ball on every shot off both sides. Barely clears the net.
Agree, Hrbaty's game really looks old school, with flat trajectories and not too much ball rotation. Many of the other good flat blasters, like Blake and Agassi, still have alot of topspin the flatter trajectories. When the ball is hit in the old school fashion, it will almost slide, rather than bouce up, making it very hard to retrieve if your not in position.

Isn't there a limit in pace you could hit the ball in flat?
Sometimes when I crush a big fully powered flat fore or backhand, it mostly just lands in front of the baseline, and then I think, how is anyone like Agassi or Safin going to hit this ball even much harder and stil manages to keep it in!?

sure but to keep it in when hitting too hard for a flat shot you have to go for more spin which won't give more pace so does it make sense to hit harder anyway?

Davide Sanguinetti, hits a completely flat ball with the continental grip. Never seen him slice. Tomas Berdych, Victor Hanescu, and Andrei Pavel hit flat as well

blake has enormous spin off the backhand. i saw him play in memphis and it was insane to me. maybe that's how all the pros hit though.

i think the main point is pace, not flat or not so flat.
hitting flat gives more pace but to get the perfect shot there has to be as much pace as possible and exactly the right amount of spin (not much anyway) to place it in front of the line.
i think safin's backhand or davenport's groundies are good examples beside others.

What about Baghdatis against Roddick? Blake's fh. Roddicks' 1st serve. Fed's fh when he wants to.

Nadal hits really flat. I don't know how he wins with that game. JK, if you have seen Amy Frazier play, or even her chest, then you'll know exactly what flat is.

Unless you already count him as a retired player, I'd say Enqvist wins this contest. Sure, someone like Safin or Hrbaty sometimes hits pretty flat, but most of the time they don't take too many risks. Enqvist OTOH is like a robot, hitting flat bomb after flat bomb after flat bomb. It's really impressive and when you see him live he stands out from the other players because of this.

Schalken, Berdych and Soderling are the other guys I'd put in this category.

hey, what the heck ever happened to Sjeng Schalken?

What is considered a flat shot at that level? Do they really hit it completely spinless or is that it just has a flat trajectory with spin? I'm sure grips don't play a huge role here. It's possible to hit decent spin with eastern forehand for example, just not that easy.

Topspin limits your pace not hitting flat !

Think about it, each player only has soo much swing power and all the energy that is diverted to adding topspin and trajectory, takes away the the pace that can be hit with a flat blast.

Most of the current topspinners cant hit a truelly flat blast. Its really a handicap built into todays style. The same can be said for the baseline blasting game. It becomes soo addictive that most good players lose the desire to develop an allcourt game, they just keep getting stronger and more consistent with baseline blasting ...

Sampras, of course, with his eastern forehand and continental backhand grips.

Nope. Video analysis revealed Sampras had ideal "ratio" of pace to
spin. His shots had lots of pace but also lots of spin(heavy balls).

In all categories of shots, Sampras ranked middle to high
in term of spin(rpm) among about 10 top players of 90's...

Williams sisters have to be flat hitters don't they, do you agree, i think sharapova also hits very flat forehands.

No, both Williams' use a lot of spin to keep their balls in, though I think Serena has a bit more on her balls - but I do think they hit with much more spin than your average WTA tour player. Most women hit fairly flat, but Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova hit the flattest balls amongst the top women.

You people don't know a damn thing. The only true flat hitter I saw in melbourne was sanguinetti. I could see what brand the ball was.

How could you forget to include the flattest western grip forehand in the world? Andy Roddick's.

From many of the posts, its obvious that many today really dont understand what a flat hit is.
Flat hits really involve both trajectory and rotation.
Wonder if many remember Jimmy Connors ?

Not if you're hitting from above the net. High balls can be hit at a downward trajectory so you could hit it as hard as you can and the ball shouldn't go out.

IIRC, while his serve had tremendous RPMs, and his backhand also had a lot of topspin on it, his forehand was, actually, very flat.

yeah, connors has shown how to hit dangerous without topspin. actually i tried to copy his forehand and had success from time to time. especially against western players it's a deadly weapon cause they just can't do anything with the ball if they're able to bring it back at all.
definitely something todays pros lack.

imagine how easy it would be for him to kill nadal or similar players :p
