US Open women’s final draws best rating since ‘02

The U.S. Open’s television ratings got a boost with a Williams sister back in the finals.

Serena Williams’ win over Jelena Jankovic on Sunday, pushed back a day because of rain, earned a 4.3 overnight rating and a 7 share on CBS, the network said Monday.

That’s up 65 percent from the 2.6/5 last year when Justine Henin beat Svetlana Kuznetsova. It’s the highest rating since an all-Williams final in 2002, when Serena’s victory over Venus drew a 7.2/13.

The Williams sisters are popular in America.

It was the better, more competitive match, for sure...Jelena brought everything she had to the table, while Murray looked a bit queasy/nervous.

It wasnt the better quality match. Closer does not equal better. All Jelena has to bring to the table still isnt going to be as ideal as what a final that involves 2 out of Sharapova, Venus, Serena, Justine, and in form Safina, could bring.

Did I say better quality? No, I said better, more competitive. And it was very high quality as well...great rallies, great construction of points, some incredible winners.

Meanwhile, the men's final was a bit of a blowout. Fed was playing at a great, high level, but Andy looked a bit tired, maybe a bit too nervous for the occasion (boy, feels like I've said this already!).

I realize that most posters on here would rather stick a pitchfork in their eye than admit any women's match was better, more competitive, well-played, and higher quality than a men's match.

Murray is a choking wuss. Whereas on the women's side Jelena at least gave it a good effort. It's a shame Nadal hasn't learned to hit through his strokes more yet on hardcourts and hit more winners. Because Murray hasn't got the stuff..

K, you go and play in your first slam final and do better.

I love keyboard commandoes, those Monday morning quarterbacks who dont own but a racquet or two, have a little bit of a first serve, no second serve, hardly a backhard, hit every overhead into the net or long by a mile and are scared to come to the net - but will certainly tell you who sucks, who shouldnt have the right to be on court, whose the best and who doest deserve to be alive.

Yea, huge run on sentence by my part, but not nearly as long winded as some of this forums best diatribe sellers.

The Williams sister would crush 99.9% of the guys on this forum. They have done what no other siblings in the history of sports, not just tennis in their wins, winnings and triumphs.

You judge them because they grunt, are successful, and are black.

Whatever. Get over yourselves.

What is it with Americans and race? No one cares what colour they are.

I have seen 2.5 players going at it...a close, intense, long match that ended 8-6 in a 3rd set TB. Competitive match-up does not mean better quality.

If those ratings are even true, it would be because people look at the Williams' as a freak show. I am sure if I put two matches on in a bar, one is Sharapova vs. Ivanovic, and the other is Serena vs. However, Sharapova/Ivanovic would win out. Maybe, people liked the way Jelena looked. Ever think of that? Maybe Jankovic is popular in America.

The Williams sisters have CONSISTENTLY been a ratings booster whenever they play.

American Player + US Open Final = Good Ratings

Had fun watching the Women's final. Had me hanging on every point in the second set when it looked like Serna was going to self-destruct. JJ also put up some outstanding defense!

NEW YORK (AP) -- Television ratings were down for the U.S. Open men's final after rain forced the match to move from Sunday to Monday.

Roger Federer's straight-set win over Andy Murray, which started at 5 p.m. EDT on CBS, drew a 1.9 national rating and a 4 share, the network said Tuesday.

That's down 49 percent from last year's 3.7/7, when Federer's victory over Novak Djokovic, a more competitive match, was in the customary Sunday time slot.

It is dumb to expect a good mens rating when the final was moved to a working day and started to be televised when many people are still at work or coming home from work these days. In addition it wasnt even broadcast on the CBS feed that goes out too all areas. The time of its rescheduling was even underreported as well. So to analyze anything about it plain dumb, frankly it is a miracle it was even as high as it was considering.

As for the womens final more people will watch a match with an American in it that is expected to be reasonably competitive, then watch a final without an American that isnt expected to be at all competitive (Henin vs Kuznetsova last year) so what do you expect.
