I am a massive Tiafoe fan; his game and his story is compelling. That being said he has not taken the steps this year that I and many thought he would. He plays big matches well but finds a way not to win them; Fed at US Open, Delpo in Mexico, Isner at the US Open last year, etc etc. I post this thread to find out what you all think of Big Foes game and where he may peak.

The positive side is that he has got a very unique skill set. He has got all of the tools of past and present top players. No glaring weaknesses. He needs to learn how to win rather than merely play.

The downside is that he is in the USTA program and their track record for producing top players is abysmal.

One day he will get to the 8-11 area (he can definitely have a Jack Sock-like season), so I voted 5-10, but he will more consistently be in the 15-25 range.

Hard to tell right now, he still learn tennis at the pro level. But maybe top 10 ranking! Win a major right now is a super long shot but could happen just like Sloan Stephen did it this year! Anything is possible but the men's tour is very tough to win a GS event because the draw is 128, 3-5 sets and two weeks long. Many of the past champions, are the topcontenders; not the young tour players. It always the veterans that go deep in the ATP! I guess, if you win a GS; you know the mental side how to pace and put up with 5 set matches. Rafa has no trouble with a 5 set match for example. And if that person beats him; the next match; he is dead meat since Rafa has pretty much drain every ounce of mental and physical strength he has!

surely top 5, maybe even top 10

If he ever makes it to the top 20 it would be a miracle. Top 10?

No way. His strokes take WAY too long to set up, especially his FH. He's about a 40-ish ranked player. Nothing more and nothing less.

He seems like a ball basher to me. Not sure why people think he has such potential. Maybe a Blake-like career and, no, I’m not comparing them bc of race.

I watched him up close at the Shanghai Masters; good player but didn't notice the 'wow' aspect that one sees with the truly top guys. But of course he is still young with room to grow. The FH didn't look as bad live. His serve could be better for his size, he places it well but it looks a bit too compact; he should be able to get more power out of it.

He is flicking his wrist. Its so strange he is doing that, its like some of the first things you learn to avoid when you are coached. He plays in an immature way, pretty bad technique, doesnt look great. I love a good swing and getting the power for the shots from that. What he is doing is a recipe for wrist injuries.

Well, from what I recall he didn't have pro coaching from a young age so his technique is indeed a bit rough. No big deal in general but surely detrimental if one wants to be a truly top player where the tiniest margins count. He can improve for sure but doesn't have much time... the top guys in his age group all have tremendous potential and won't wait for him.

Not many players have pro coaching from very young age, still very rare you see that bad techniques playing in ATP level. Its so odd. How can his wrist handle playing w the big guys for long I don't think. He seem like like a nice and fun guy though, but tough to watch tennis played like that.

If he doesnt sort out his very odd serve and fh technique he will not last long. Its so strange its tough to watch him play.

Also thought he had very poor footwork, from what i've seen of him. Technically one of the worst players i've ever seen in the top 100.

The fact he can still make top 100 indicates impressive talent. Learning good technique and having raw talent aren't the same thing.

Yes, its incredible he has come this far. Very talented. But I don't think he will ever sniff on top 10 playing like he does now.

He won't no. He needs a super coach who can tweak his technique without getting rid of what he does well naturally!

Tiafoe is an inverse of Dominic Thiem, a guy whose game is totally textbook and manufactured, almost too much so to the point where he cannot make adjustments.

Domis BH technique is not perfect, think he might have a upper back injury because of it.

Is Frances a girl name?

I'm sorry someone hasn't explained this to you sooner but it works like this. If the name is being used by a boy it's a boys name. If it is being used by a girl it's a girls name. This follows standard rules of logic.

If you mean is it customarily used by one gender or another ? I don't know or care. Call yourself whatever you want and I'm happy to play along.

More to the point of this thread, Tiafoe has to my eyes a bizarre forehand that does not look technically sound. I found him to be a very nice kid and I hope he proves me very wrong.

I still find the OP poll numbering very odd. o_O

Your answer is too long for my question. However irrelevant it may be, it’s still unanswered.

Yes, it’s a girl’s name. Francis is the male version. Not everyone knows this (including probably his parents who picked the wrong name, or not, who knows).

I think he will become a top10 Player, not sure if top5 but I wouldn't rule it out. very athletic Player and has some Pop too. doesn't have very elegant mechanics and at times Looks a Little raw but he definitely is very talented.

I apologize for the odd format; I guess I did that to really make people think about where they see Tiafoes future going, instead of giving a generic "top 30" answer. I think he's an example of what is fun and great about tennis; loves to play the game, very bizarre strokes but they work, and in someways a player we can relate to!
