Germany +315 at Russia -345, Davis Cup Semifinal

Action starts tomorrow. The Tennis Channel will be broadcasting these matches live. Here is the order of play:

Friday
Igor Andreev (RUS) v Tommy Haas (GER)
Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) v Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER)

Saturday
Dmitry Tursunov/Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v Philipp Petzschner/Alexander Waske (GER)

Sunday
Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) v Tommy Haas (GER)
Igor Andreev (RUS) v Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER)

I think Germany will challenge the defending champs but will eventually lose 2 and 3.

Probably right, but I still hope for a 3:2 win for Germany. I'd love to see a USA-Germany DC-final.

Ooo! Yes, that would be a nice final! Honestly, it is just that I *think* Russia will win, but I'd be thrilled if Germany pulled it out!

Andreev took the first rubber 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 over Haas.

Davydenko is not down 2 sets to 1 against Kolschriber, now if the poor guy can only hold serve.

Crap...wish I had the tennis channel...I'm stuck watching boring Andy RodDICK...come on Pim Pim!!

Think Russia will win too, but like a few friends above, hope for Germany;)

Personally, I feel that Germany will now win because Germany will be able to win its doubles match and Phillip will come through and be the hero.

Germany won the double in 4 sets. They have a good chance now with an overall score of 2-1 for Germany. Phillip can be rested for his reverse singles match vs Andreev and if Haas can get it together it could happen.

Haas *must* pull through...or I think it will be over (for Germany)...Andreev is too good on clay.

This doubles win was very important for Germany. :D
I'm really happy for Petzschner, who played great in his first ever DC-match. He kept his cool when Waske was hurt in the 4th and could only serve like 150-160 km/h. He was the reason Germany won in 4, imo.
Tursunov/Youzhny are a bad combo. They don't work well together, even though they've played as a team a few times already. Waske/Petzschner had better teamwork and they played together for the first time.

I still think it will be very tough tomorrow for Germany. Andreev will be very hard to beat on clay, even for a well-rested and great playing Kohlschreiber.
And Haas in a deciding 5th rubber on clay is not the best option.
I think either Youzhny or Tursunov will play for Davydenko.
At least it will be an exciting 3rd day in this DC-tie.

Very much agree. Petzschner played well at the USO against Haas, really pushing Tommy and surprising the crowd with his solidity. So was really tremendous to see him play so well with Waske, and get this needed win. Hope to see very much more from him in the future. Rather reminds me of Carl Uwe-Steeb in a way, who also played well in doubles for Germany in the past.

Andreev is the favorite, since he has had the rest (not to forget he plays best on clay). But Kohlschreiber loves the clay. If they switch out Davydenko then they should put Youzhny in. He's much better on clay then Tursunov.

Now that you mention it, they do have some similarities. Although, Petzschner isn't the strongest mentally, which kept him from playing up to his potential early in his career, but he improved a lot over the past 5-6 month and this important match could do wonder for his confidence (which is maybe the most important part for a tennis pro - building up your confidence). I really hope so.

On ther other hand, Youzhny doesn't have a good record against Haas. Either player will be a gamble for the russian team. Davydenko is still the best option against Haas on clay, but if he doesn't feel well and has issues with the court you have to take your chances.

Yeah, anyone know what caused Tommy's lackluster performance? Was he sick? I think he has a good chance of beating whoever the Russians play, but not if he plays like he did Friday.

Mikhail Youzhny replaced Davydenko, and Philipp Petzschner replaced Haas.

Youzhny def Petzechner 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

2-2, Andreev vs Kolscreiber

What is wrong with Tommy Haas?

Quite true. It is going to be an exciting couple of matches.

Edit: interesting that Germany replaced Haas and put Petzechner in.
