Gosen Micro

I have to say that in my 30 years of playing, Gosen Micro is the best value for the money IMO. I have tried numerous amount of expensive and inexpensive synthetic strings but the playability is quite good along with decent durability in the 16 gauge version. I know that there alot of other inexpensive synthetic strings but most have the great overall playability of Gosen.

I recently tried Head Synthetic 16 in my Prince Phantom 100p and the durability was a little better than the Gosen but the overall playability was not as good. Gosen Micro really has a nice feel and pockets the ball well for a synthetic string. I usually get anywhere from 6-10 hours out of Gosen 16 before it breaks which is decent durability IMO.

If you have some arm issues and don't want to use poly or more expensive synthetic string, I highly recommend buying a reel of the Gosen for 44 bucks.

I have a couple of sets of Gosen Micro included with my next TW demos.

I love syngut and think more people should play with this class of string. (Someone get Gosen to put the JC edition back in production!)

Also, AK Pro CX may be the "super syngut" many who click on this thread might like.

I'll add Solinco Vanquish to this as well. They ask muli filament pricing but it plays more like a super syngut to me .. and that's a good thing. I finally decided to buy a reel since I was using it in so many sucessful hybrids.

I have a reel of 16g & 18g couple of 17g in 40' packs. I use the 16 for friends I string for, but I have been using 18g on all my frames for the last 2+ months.

I have tried many other major well known brands that are in similar price range but none I have stucked with but gosen. PSGD has similar longevity but harsher feel and it frays more than gosen which seems like it wears thin evenly after initial fraying.

I only use them as cross now a days, I really like how the playability remains thru the life of the string, it provides comfort and power at a price that is impossible to beat.

Two questions.

(a) what's your NTRP/ UTR / tennis background?

(b) crossing with what mains?

(c) what's your gamer frame

[ok that's three questions]

I am a rec player, I hit the courts 3 times a week even in the hottest part of our humid summer. Sometimes is just rallying the ball for excercise (like today for 1.5hr) , but I play for fun pick up matches 7and if my dad shows up (he is 70, I am 35 and he thought me both how to play and how to string) then I like to play doubles with him and some other old guys.

I would say I have learned good form and technique, but my swing is more fluid rather than explosive and I like to hit with moderate spin or flatter if I can catch it on the bounce inside the court. Because I am not a string breaker and I don't try to crush every ball during play, I have come to like the feel of thinner strings and durability is not an issue.

I play with 3 frames, all of them from the 00's era, a Vlk c10pro that is currently strung with Ghostwire 19g mains and weights 340g, my go-to ProK Ki 5G with Proline2 18L (330g) and PStorm team with Spiky Shark 17g (305g)

I bought a racket strung with OG Sheep Super and liked it more than I thought I would. Weirdly, it felt like it went went stiff and dead after maybe 4-6 hours of use? Haven't experienced that with other synthetic gut string beds.

Maybe you strung it with too high of a tension. The regular Gosen is better IMO and is also a tad softer. I don't experience Gosen getting stiffer with more play, if anything it gets softer.

I have not tried the super version, but my experience (at a recreational level) has been that OGSM plays consistently for the lifespan of the string bed. I had a frame that I rarely used/loaner and had 17g for 2 years and still played like expected. I think there are other softer s.gut but the response is more consistent with gosen.

A tale of two gauges for me.

I've always kept a reel of OGSM 16 handy for this or that. It seems to be a terrific option as a cross in a simply poly hybrid - I often use Isospeed Baseline for these setups and it's worked great. As a full bed, I really don't use the 16 ga. too often unless somebody has already been playing with that and wants to keep it the same.

Prince SG w/Duraflex has generally turned me off in 16 ga. - too stiff and clunky feeling - and I find OGSM 16 to be only mildly less stiff, but I might give it a chance at rather low tension - maybe 52 lbs. or lower - in one of my 98" Volkls.

I can say that I'm getting a great ride with the OGSM 17 in my Volkl C10's tensioned at 53 or 54 lbs. Softer 17 ga. syn. guts generally work for me in those frames up at 57-58 lbs., but the Gosen at that tension almost makes my teeth hurt.

Still hoping that Kirschbaum's buttery wonderful syn. gut returns to our shores. I'll probably buy a half-mile of the stuff!! But Gosen at lower tensions can probably feel quite good and I'd give it the edge over K-baum in terms of durability.

Arm issues? I'd say that if somebody is in the middle of managing some pain and still playing, it's smart to go substantially more soft with the strings. I rather like Prince Premier Control for its combo of softness and holding some tension compared with other multis. It's also helped with cooling out a couple cases of tennis elbow and golfer's elbow among locals in my circle in recent years. After the arm issues cool out, then maybe syn. gut like OGSM at moderate tension would work. There's also Forten Sweet - pretty sure that this is the softest syn. gut in the family.

I love OGSM 16 in full bed and as a hybrid cross string with a monofilament. Though Forten Sweet and Prince Syn Gut Original play pretty similar and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind playtest.

I find that Gosen Micro has a very consistent feel throughout the life of the string job. Forten for example is quite soft and looses tension and breaks fairly quickly. Prince Synthetic Duraflex is ok but plays a bit too firm IMO. I find that most multis don't hold tension well and become too mushy. Also durability of multi is generally not too good. I have broken a full bed of Head Velocity in under 3 hours in the 16 gauge.

The Gosen Micro has given me some reasonable durability 6-10 hours before breakage and the playability is quite good. My arm has never felt better since I stopped using poly about 6-7 years ago.

I think OGSM is as good as any other synthetic gut.
Or: any synthetic gut is as good as Gosen Micro.

I have a reel and use it to string one particular guy's Ti Rad MP every 4-6 weeks at 45lbs on my lockout NEOS 1000. When I personally dabble into syn gut I use Gosen Proform Tuff 15L or Pros Pro Color Line 1.40mm in yellow.
