Guess how fast I serve.....

Ok so I was reading poor drakulies post about serving with a radar gun. The guy gives physical proof and still people start the conspiracy theroies. Camera angle, doctoring, bah blah blah.

My favorite comments are the "if you serve that fast I serve this fast".

I just put up a video on google video with me serving and hitting ground strokes.

I am taking some pretty big cuts in the video but only really go balls to the wall a few times. I just borrowed my friends radar gun, here is the model.

As soon as it stops raining and the courts dry a little I am going to go out and hit some serve and record them with the radar gun. I am going to try to hit 100 serves and have someone mark both wether they were in or out and then how fast they were. That way I can get some sort of speed and percentage. Also the video I put up was shot from the net and the new video will be shot from behind so you can see some placement and also we can see if the ball looks considerably slower. Hopefully the new video will be up this weekend but there is a chance of rain all weekend here in Oklahoma.

So guess what my fastest serve will be and if you want my average speed.
Who ever gets the closest I will buy them a beer if they are ever in Oklahoma!

This video link is not working but the other one was and I would say you serve in the 100's. I will guess fast serve of 105mph and average speed around 100mph. What's the answer?

Looks like a good serve that you have. How long have you been playing tennis? You could probably play 4.0 or 4.5 doubles from the video.

*Looks at Kevhen's post* If this were the price is right, I think I'd say 106 :D
Honestly though, you probably hit about 115 maximum, with an average of 95. Too bad they were pretty much all footfaults so none of them count :(

Also, either you vary your toss depending on whether you're serving out wide or down the line, or you just don't have a very consistent toss. If it's the latter, then that causes the amount you lean backwards to vary, and thus forces you to move your left foot forward (and over the baseline) in order to help maintain your balance. Pretty good technique, otherwise, you just need to cut down on the foot faults :)

Yeah I noticed the foot faults, for now I just start a little further from the baseline to compensate but in the future I would like to get rid of that extra little step forward. The tossing is just my inconsistency. The second I throw the ball up I know if I am going to hit it in or not. I just can not lay off the ball once I have tossed it, I have almost killed my back a few times reaching for a ball I had no business hitting. Thanks for the input!

SuperFrogFighter, nice vid. You have really good racquet head speed.

I would guess fastest: 110?

Average: 90?

Thanks for sharing! Look forward to seeing the serve from the different angles you mentioned. Keep us updated.

I like your right leg kick--very chorus line.

FWIW, I think you are hitting over 100 on some of your serves but I'm not skilled enough to guess by how much.

I think people get too caught up on serve speed. What's more important IMO, is variation of serve. Can you hit a fast flat and a fast spin. A slow spin, a slice, a kicker. If you watched Nadal play Djokovic then you would have seen how Nadal made numerous errors on serves that barely broke 100mph even while he was standing 10 to 12 feet behind the baseline. Variety is the spice of life. ;-)

I'd say average speed is 90-95 mph, fastest around 105-110 mph. Pretty impressive considering your not using much knee bend (mostly arm). Bend those knees a little more I'm sure you could get close to 120 mph because you have the racquet head speed.

bushnell radar

That radar isn't quite powerful enough to measure your serves nor groundstrokes. You need a Jugs or Decatur gun that they use for baseball.

I'd guess average is around 92-93, I'd guess if you were trying for speed you could hit 108mph with over 50% accuracy. (Not that I could tell whether or not the ball was landing in). This is my detailed guess ;)

haha if you speed the video up, you can see the sky get darker every couple of seconds while he's just there serving the entire time

you're letting the ball drop. if anything lower your toss a bit and hit it at its apex. keep your back straight

Well this radar gun says it is supposed to go up to 150 mph so I do not think the speed will be a problem. It is made to measure pitching speed so I think it will work for my serve. The only thing I am concerned about it where my gf can stand to measure it without me hitting her with a serve (I would have to buy a lot of flowers to make up for that one). I Am going to try having her stand behind and to the right of me and everytime I serve she can just take a step over and put the detector in front of the camera. Who knows, it finally stopped raining this morning now just got to see how long before the courts dry.

Like you already stated, don't move your front foot after your toss. My consistency went up after I got rid of that bad habit.

FYI, that radar gun is maxed out at 110 mph for baseball/tennis application and 200 for automobile. Nevertheless, I would say your max is around 105 with an average of 90 mph.

Are you saying that the ball isn't hitting the back fence on the fly after landing in the box? Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying, or the camera is deceptive. Because it looks/sounds like you have a pretty good amount of steam, but if it aint hittin the back fence on the fly...

fast serve, but doesnt matter how fast your serve is cos you gota learn to keep your foot behind the line while you hit the ball - so all that speed for nothing.

Try keeping ur feet still then jumping into the ball

No "going balls to the wall" means not hitting my hardest, sorry for the confusion. I have no problem hitting the back fence on one hop on both my kick and flat serve. When I shot my new video I will try to keep from foot faulting and will try to move the ball around the service box. I have a pretty nasty out wide serve from the ad court and pretty nice down the t in the deuce court. Thanks again guys!

OK, I misread it. Looked like you had more than enough giddyup on your ball, and was wondering what was up.
