How is it possible for Federer to finish 2014 as Year End #1

Trying to figure out how it is even possible for Federer to finish 2014 as Year End #1? It seems impossible, but I think here are the scenarios:

Federer has 8,700 points. Djokovic has 10,010 points. A difference of 1,310 points.

So it seems the only way for Federer to finish year end #1 would be:

Djokovic goes 0-3 in round robin. 0 Points.
Federer goes undefeated in winning Year End finals. 1500 points. Federer #1 by 190 points.

Djokovic goes 1-2 in round robin. 200 points.
Federer goes undefeated in winning Year End Finals. 1500 points. Federer wins 1 Davis Cup match. 75 points. Federer #1 by 65 points.

Djokovic goes 2-1 in round robin. 400 points.
Federer goes undefeated in winning Year End finals. 1500 points. Federer wins 2 Davis Cup matches and team wins competition. 225 points. Federer #1 by 15 points.

Federer is not going to be YE #1. Your dream of Federer tying Sampras' record has been shattered. Deal with it.

Can we stop talking about this already and just let Djokovic, the guy who won a slam and four Masters 1000 titles, have the ye #1. Let Federer focus on trying to win the DC to add to his resume and then focus on trying to win one more slam. That is more important.

On the plus side Federer still has the more important records for most consecutive weeks at number 1 and most total weeks at number 1. Year end #1 is as arbitrary as number of Septembers ranked #1 or Aprils or Junes.

This. Federer can add to his resume this year still by winning the WTF and the DC. But he won't be adding another #1 to his record.

There's one difference: YE#1 will get almost 10 extra free weeks at #1, because there's no competition before January.

But wouldn't it be RIDICULOUS, if Djoko were to lose one RR match, and then lose in the semis!

Especially if it's Federer that defeats him in the semi.

At this point, though, I think it's obvious Djokovic is the best player in the world and had the best season in 2014, regardless of what happens in the WTF. Would be pretty bizarre to see Federer at number one above him, although I'd gladly take it and laugh at all the whining Sampras fanboys.

Even if that's the case, Fed still needs to go undefeated at both DC and WTF, which is highly unlikely to happen. Federer at this age would be lucky to get out of RR without any loss.

How great would that be? :) You never know, stranger things have happened but I don't anticipate it. I think Djokovic has been the best indoor player in the world for the past couple of years.

#1 and #2 meets in the semis? Whatever you are smoking must be some good stuff.

Like posters on TT discussing these scenarios is going to influence Fed or Djoker's quest for #1  I don't think there has been another thread on what exactly are the possible scenarios for the #1 ranking now (though Djoko has it virtually sealed for all practical purposes) and the OP gives a very clear picture of this.

Sounds like someone's bitter because Federer has eclipse Sampras in almost every way imaginable. Honestly, you have to find a way to deal with it, not the other way round.

Yeah, it is called basic knowledge of the WTF draw format and you clearly are in need of some . Though #1 and #2 are on two different halves, they could meet in the knockout stage in the semifinal itself, if one of them finishes first in their respective half and the other finishes second in his half.

It is you who is smoking something here. Semifinal matchups at the YEC are determined by your RR points and standing. So if Djokovic were to end up 2nd in his group and Federer 1st (or vice versa) they would play in the semis. Seeds and rankings are irrelevant. I am shocked a Sampras fan would not be aware of this after all these years.
