Not enough conversation on his many close contests in Slams.

2012 FO R16
2013 AO R16
2013 USO SF
2014 USO QF
2015 AO SF
2015 WMB QF
2016 AO R16
2017 AO SF

I look at 2014 USO loss to Nishikori as the first really missed opportunity.

This could have been a straight setter for Stan, unfortunately a kind of staple for his career playing a bit down to the competition. In the 3rd set he comes back 2-5 down a break and forced tiebreak. In that tiebreak he had opportunities at 5-3, serving at 5-4 losing both service points but getting a set point on serve at 7-6. Kei played good but Stan had so many errors I felt he certainly lost the match more than Nishikori won it. I know Cilic was zoning this tournament but he at least gets to the final with Novak being quite terrible this tournament for his standard.

In 2016 he had both opportunities at the AO and French. Of course at the French he lost to Murray in 4 and I still don't know what was up with him but at the AO he lost to Raonic and Milos went on to almost beat Murray in the semis. I think Wawrinka would have put a better showing against Novak than he did in 2015 but who knows.

And of course there's 2013 AO losing to Novak 12-10 in the fifth. My problem with this is Murray's maturity could have prevailed in that final, but certainly a chance.

About right slam count . He bloomed later on the courts.
Also not a strong net game, not the best mover, error prone, dink serve returns , injury prone etc
He was a joy to watch when on full flow

Actually I think that he has already overachieved, he should not have more than 2 GS IMO.

Wasn’t there a blown missed call on BP that would have given him the break of serve in the 5th vs Joker in the 2013 AO? @junior74

Not saying he would have gone on to win the tournament since that was only the 4R, but he still would have had a chance to serve it out. Given how mentally tough he was in that match (and at his peak in big matches) I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest to see him close that one out.

I think if he pulled out W in the Nishikori match then he goes on it win the 2014 USO. Joker was really subpar in the SF and he has a 13-2 record vs Chilly.

I think he could have maybe added one moar schlem to his CV. As others have said he either did or came pretty close to maximizing his talent.

3 is a good number for Stan, some of his wins were very close, just like some of his losses were.

Of those listed, only US 14, 2015 and 16 AO seem like real missed opportunities.

No chance he wins RG 12 or Wimbledon 2015 lol, and actually even in 2015 AO Djoker could probably have finished him off in four.

I love Stan, he's probably my second favorite player, but he might not have even won one if not for the Big 3. They really forced him to buckle down and raise his game, and he was up to the task.

Considering his talent - 5.
Considering what he achieved in rest of the tourneys, he probably overachieved compared to the likes of Delpo and Murray

Stan is a real oddity in winning as many Slams as he did without achieving much of anything else (his only other big title was 2014 Monte Carlo) but kudos to him for that. Until Magnus Norman came along to coach him he was very much seen as a talented journeyman, albeit a top #10 player, with just a few small titles to his name. Norman taught him how to raise his game and show his potential by having more confidence to beat the Big 4 on the biggest stages. At the age of almost 29, you could say he rescued him just in the nick of time. He did astonishingly well to win as many as he did.

Stan remains, so far, the only other current player to win multiple Slams outside of the Big 4 and, in this sense, I rate him as part of a Big 5 along with them.

Wow just wow. He beat two of best player of last 20 years for his 3 slams ( both in his route to his AO) and you calling him overachiever ? tell us how many player have beaten Both Nadal and Djokovic to win their title? Just one.

Imo, Wawa wasted his potential. He had everything in his arsenal , was powerfull off both wings, good serve and good movement. had he worked with a better coach since his younger days he would have achieved way more than he did. I respect Wawa for his big game and his big wins.

I think 3 is the right slam total for Stan! He wasn't really consistent at his peak, compared to someone like Murray who should have won at least 5-6 slams imo.

Stanimal Vs USO14 Cilic would’ve been quite something. I would prefer Stanimal but I dunno if he takes that one though. That Cilic was brutal, and brutally consistent.

If he had shown his potential since early in his career he could have won two more. Sure, Fedal were better but it's not like he doesn't have the weapons to beat them. He matches up better against Djokovic, but he could beat Djokovic after Djokovic beat Nadal or Federer in the SF as well. He went to 5 against Federer at the AO 2017 and Federer was playing really good, even if not at his peak, he gave him trouble on Wimbledon one time and that's by far his worst surface. Against Nadal at the AO he was winning before the injury as well, it's not a ridiculous idea at all that he could beat him on HC. He would never beat Nadal on clay and Federer/Djokovic on grass, but other than that he can win against anyone (and even then he could beat Djokovic or Federer on grass maybe with some luck and a great performance).

FO15 was a great win, blitzting RF then nole, but AO14 and USO16 he faced an injured rafa for 2/3 of the match so there's a slight question mark over how that may have finished, and a very sub par nole who crawled to the final, he still fully deserved all 3 but I think 3 in total more is than suitable for him considering his lack of consistency, and being 2-0 against Nole in GS finals is a nice feather in his cap despite the lopsided H2H.

Yes in 2013 AO 4R at 5th set, on BP he made a great return right at Novaks toes. It was called out. Stan didnt challenge. Replays showed it hit the line. Instead of having the break an dserving for the match, he ended up giving up the game to Novak.

If he had started cheating on his wife sooner and getting some of that sweet, sweet D-Vex juice earlier, who knows what might have been possible. 2013 was obviously a huge breakout year for him. Expecting much of anything earlier than that seems a stretch.

The 2014 US Open is the obvious glaring example of one that was there for the taking, but then that was Kei's moment for a miracle. Who would have thought Nishikori could beat someone he had yet to take a set from coming off the back of a five-setter with Raonic, and then with back to back five-setters under his belt go and beat Djokovic in 4? WTF.
