This is a poll in reaction to USTA NorCal’s arbitrary ruling to increase league registration by $25 to $54 from $29 per season due to a “facility use fee” in addition to what members & guests already pay to use courts for league matches.

Keep in mind folks, this may affect you down the road. If it rolls out here, it’s bound to happen nationally.

$35 for us but we don’t play any extra usage fees at both public and private facilities. Home team providing balls is the only extra expense.

Pacific Northwest. We pay somewhere between $25 and $30 for league fees, and we pay $15 guest fees each time when we play away. We provide balls for home matches.

I just registered my team for sectional competition - that was $257.

We pay 42.75 just to the USTA per league

Then there are the facility/club league fees for courts, balls and practice courts ... runs around 75-100 depending on season

All told, lets just call it an even $150 per season .... 10-12 matches .... really that is pretty cheap to do something you enjoy!

I really don't understand the complaining about the costs of league fees.

And when the northeast folks chime in with their costs ..... there should be no whining.

For an international perspective I pay $65 US for my annual club membership. As they’re an affiliated club, that comes with membership of my national association.

Match fees (including court hire) are $13 US for grass courts and $9 US for carpet/hard (5 sets, roughly 3-4 hours).

Daytime court hire outside competition is $13/hr US for clay or grass and $9/hr US for carpet or hard.

Evening court hire outside competition is $20/hr US for clay, carpet or hard (can’t play on grass at night).

All courts are outdoor, indoor tennis isn’t a thing where I live.

that's usually a separate fee, are they double dipping because you end up paying court fees also at whatever facility you go to. UTR league please come sooner.

I think I pay $35 to USTA for registration.
In addition, for each match:
$4 per home match to my club plus a can of balls, beer and snacks.
$15 guest fee for away matches.

Thanks for sharing. You're definitely lucky if you get to play in every match, every season, and your average cost per match is around $10-$15.

You're right about folks who would have to play indoors, but this is NorCal where we don't need indoor facilities, don't pay for them, and pay a premium on housing to otherwise enjoy it. I'd say not quite apples to apples because the supply/demand, and weather are different factors.

Being a NorCal player, I pay around $350/year for membership at my club. This is on the cheap side. There are other clubs that average $100/mo for membership, but have more amenities. My club has courts and a small pro shop. No gym, no pool, no frills (all hard court). There is an additional $25 annual fee we already pay to the city (which goes towards responsibly managing our facilities).

On average, I play on one 18+ team, 2-3 mixed teams (8.0, 9.0, 10.0), and two combo teams (8.5 & 8.5). Let's call it six teams, where I might get in 5-6 matches in a given season (10.0 I'm lucky to get 2). So I pay $174 per year in League fees. To tack on an extra $25 to each of those team registrations (an extra $150) is nuts. I get no additional matches, and the big issues the vagueness as to how the increased fees (about $2MM across 77k NorCal players based on last year's number of team registration fees paid) is going to make a difference in the quality of the facilties I play at.

So I pay, on average $30/month for my club, or about $90-100 in membership for a full season. Let's call it $130. I may play 5-6 matches, which brings my average cost per match to $21-$26 per match. It will cost more if I'm the home team and have to supply balls and bring a food assignment (everyone in the lineup brings something). So it's already fairly costly, in my opinion.

Already, two really large clubs in NorCal have issued statements in opposition. (LifeTime & Spare Time).

This doesn't factor in balls, or food assignments for home matches.

Additionally, other nearby clubs I play a flat fee per season, around $50-$100 TO THE CLUB in addition to the regular USTA fee.

The issue here is the lack of clarity and transparency as to what the money is going towards and how it is adding value and staying true to USTA's goal of growing the game of tennis.

It’s honestly not surprising that Northern California is much more expensive, since everything (particularly real estate) is more expensive there. So stop whining. That’s just part of the price you pay to live in the most popular location in America.

I live in the Northern region.

I don't remember how much USTA is per year. I bought a package of multiple years, so whatever...

League fees are $26 for the 3 month team seasons, $21 for each ONE Doubles league.

I play an $18 court fee for each match, whether home or away. Most matches are indoor as it's Minnesota, but in the summer there are outdoor courts and matches which might be less. However, at most of the league facilities, most of the season, it's indoors and it's $18. I generally get 4-6 matches in per season (I'm the captain) and I've been playing in 2 leagues lately (Men's and Mixed).

I'm not a member at a club, the local LifeTime Fitness-es are quite pricey, you still pay for courts, and there isn't one that is close enough to me for personal, non-league use.

We also only play outdoors .... and we never pay a per match fee for home or away matches. Just what we pay to the USTA and what we pay to our home club/facility. Balls are included in the fee to our home club.

Each year I play 8-10 league seasons. In most of those seasons I play in 6-10 matches out of each 10-12 match season. Last year I believe I crossed 80 USTA league matches.

Overall, I spend a lot on tennis .... all told (including equipment, shoes, etc.) definitely over $2000 a year ... but on a per match basis I think it is still pretty cheap.
(Cheaper than a 1 hour spin class, cheaper than a 1 hour pilates class or yoga session)

I agree there should be communication as to what the extra $25 is for .... but has it been actually implemented?

Our leagues are all indoor and we don't have timed matches thankfully.

Our fees:
$20 for each USTA registration
$18 for match (includes a match beverage which all the clubs but 1 have beer)

I always felt like we had it better than most when discussing with others at sectionals etc how their leagues work.

Okay, let's be clear. It's not just about the increase in fees. Yes, it would be a hardship for low income folks and for some, it would be well within their means. Setting the affordability issue aside -- it's equally about where the funds are going to. The proposal is to funnel the $25 per person per league to mostly private clubs. This is where the outrage is coming from. Those fees amount to approx $1.4 million. So, here you have the vast majority of players essentially propping up and financing "USTA member organizations" which is comprised of mostly private and very exclusive clubs.

It is supposed to go into effect during 18+ mixed season and 55+ season, I believe. At this point USTA National is about the only chance we have of getting it revoked (in addition to the support of over 2k folks who have signed the petition & the club chains who have publicly issued statements against it as well). Hopefully it's enough to get the point across.

+1 for what ettennis said. Like clubs that only high level execs, CEO's, and business moguls can afford to be a part of. These clubs also have a below-average amount of courts (3-4) and a small number of USTA teams playing out of the relative to the rest of the clubs this would impact. Also, I doubt a person with a $100k salary could afford membership at one of those establishments.

The fee NorCal’s Board approved and the discussion is not merely about the amount of $54 it would cost to join the League. It’s about the discriminatory, self-serving nature of the fee and how the Board members themselves are pretty much the only ones benefiting from the extra $1.4 million this would generate for their own private clubs. Read this: https://savingnorcalleagues.blogspot.com/2020/03/read-official-tax-proposal-its-much.html?m=1

Read this to see what this fee is all about. It’s not whining about a fee increase. It’s fighting blatant abuse of power and discrimination against public parks, schools and low income players by the Board members who’s private clubs would be the only ones benefiting from the $1.4-1.8 million a year.

This is not quite right for Austin. If a team uses a municipal facility for their home courts, they do have to pay an additional fee for use of the courts. The captain usually pays the total amount for the season to the facility and then typically collects a onetime equal payment from each team member to reimburse himself. I do not know how the private clubs handle this issue.

Sorry, play at a private and didn’t realize the public teams had to pay extra. Pretty reasonable overall though IMO.
