Rafa joined the AO on 14 October 2019 and has created exactly 39 threads since. So his game was at very high level.

Cilic was scary good in that match (and also pushed Federer to 5 sets in the final), so no shame in Rafa losing that :) plus the injury was obvious.
Its really hard to analyze Rafa's level though, I try to forget the slams he doesn't win, so I don't have a clear memory of Rafa's level in all the matches at 2018ao.....but I remember the Cilic match very clearly.

Not really impressive. He wasn't really convincing vs Mayer and Schwartzman. Even when he won the 3rd set vs Cilic I thought it will go to 5.

Cilic was in impressive form. Nadal got injrued in the late part of the fourth set, but even before the injury Cilic was troubling Nadal. Cilic also pushed Federer to 5 sets.

Pretty average. His serve was poor. Even someone like Schwartzman managed to out ace him.
Exactly. His serve was very bad during most of 2018. Because of that he didn't get any free points and had to fight too hard for every point, and as a result he got injured in both AO and USO. (his serve was terrible in RG as well, but there he still managed to win all the important points and get away with it). Good that he improved his serve in 2019.

He was on par with Federer in terms of form (both were average), but got screwed by the draw actually having to play the only 2 decent field players at this tournament back to back. No way was Federer winning the title if he had to play Schwartzman-Cilic combo while Nadal would’ve thrived over Berdych, Chung and freaking Fucsovics (What a joke). Federer’s draw was something straight from 2006.

This is pure comedy.
