How would you feel if 2021...

As some of you may already know I would love to see Fedal win additional slams... 8-B However I'm satisfied with their careers as they really have nothing else to prove with both being part of Club 20, which brings me to my question...

What if next year we have the new generation taking over? Something like:

AO: Tsitsipas
FO: Thiem
W: Zverev
USO: Medvedev

Would that be satisfying for you or would it be disappointing because the slam race is still the selling point? To me I wouldn't mind because 20-20-17 would be a great ending.

Wouldn’t hate it, would love one of the young guns to nab two slams but for a bit of consistency like Naomi Osaka.

I was sure the thread was about this:

"How would you feel if in 2021...

... Djokovic was abducted by aliens and all his titles stripped from him by an intergalactic anti-Pyramids sports tribunal?"

Instead, it's a valid thread. You're improving.

I would like to see Fed win one more slam, but I believe hoping for that is unrealistic. However, if none of the Big 3 wins another big tournament, I'd be happy. I've had enough of their dominance.

I am not improving, my threads have always been valid... Maybe you are the one who is improving and starting to see the value of my threads?

This option would mean that I'm devolving from genius to amoeba. That you're successfully brainwashing me to follow your anti-Novak agenda.

Nah, ain't happening.

I'm down for Fog at age 33 to win the CYGS in 2021. Damn the next gen.

I would like the best player on each surface to win Slams next year.

Nadal at RG, Djokovic at W, Thiem at AO and USO. Thiem for YE#1.

It would be nice to see Federer in the semifinals of a couple of Slams. I don’t like any of the top NextGen players enough to want them to win Slams in 2021. I am starting to like Sinner and Ruud and maybe they will be ready in 2022.

I can see Nadal and Djokovic winning one slam each, and Thiem and/or Medvedev winning the remaining two. It’s going to get tougher but the old guys are not out of the picture yet.

Federer will not win GS tournaments again.
Nadal, on the other hand, could end his career with 22 Major titles, like the mythical Steffi Graf.
It would be the perfect ending for the Spanish legend.

Nadal is winning more than two more RG titles. I've got him at the next three at least.

Think how different predictions would be in this forum if people actually had to put money up. It would be fun to watch most people lose a lot of money. ;)

I make no predictions about what is next, only that aging players eventually have to retire because they can no longer win, and since no one is immortal yet (that may change in the future) the Big 3's time winning slams is coming to a close. But that may be now, or next year, or in a few years. That we do not know.

So nothing in 2021 will surprise me. If the Big 3 win them all, I won't like it, and I don't expect it, but it's not out of the question. If NONE of them win slams, that also would not surprise me, although I think that also is not likely.

It is more likely that we will see fewer slams won by the Big 3 each year, and that will open up tennis to new future stars.

You know Nadal is not winning the FO at ages 19 and 37 LOL

This is Rafa we're talking about, I'll believe it when I see it. If Federer can play high quality at that age, so can Rafa, and he is still leagues ahead of everyone on clay. Let me know when he starts to slip and we'll talk. :)

Imagine 16 French opens..... just absolute madness.

Federer has one more suprise in store for us for sure. Even if it is not a major it will something huge.

I got him at three more RG as it stands. I think he gets to 16 RG titles. I think he starts to lose his grip after that 16th win.
Let's revisit this in three years. Declines always happen faster than we expect, and you never see it until it happens - unless it is an injury.

I'll only say this - what Fed did at such and advanced age for tennis players may not be fully appreciated even now. It's not the first time it's happened - check Pancho Gonzales and Rosewall. There was a time when aging stars seemed like they would go on winning forever, and if you check the ages of people winning on the pro tour who kept winning in the Open era, it's not totally different from now, just more extreme. Imagine Laver, Rosewall and Gonzales with modern training methods, diet, surgery and a whole team of physios. You had these aging stars who looked like they would go on forever.

I'm older than Connors by 4 years. Connors was not even on the radar before he burst through. No one saw him coming, or Borg, or Mac. In almost zero time it went from these guys in their 30s to those very young stars. So history tells us that things can flip in very little time.

Agree with you Gary, sound reasoning as always. :)

just curiously, Gary, did you ever put a bet on a sporting event in your life? and if yes.. how it was.. successful?:)
Nope. Never bet a penny. I don't have a gambling bone in my body. Never bought a raffle ticket. The only bets I make are play bets. ;)

I take all the money in my pocket, put it on the piano and then have my students pretend that we have a bet, and if they do something I say they can't, they get my money. But if they screw up, I get theirs. I lose now and again, but I wins something like 49 out of 50 times. We don't really take the money though. ;)

It sounds completely insane until you remember that we are talking about this man:

giphy.gif

Well let's hope so. I legit thought he was completely done winning the FO in 2015. He eeked it out in 2013, and could barely hold up the trophy in 2014 from cramps and fatigue, and then there was 2015. Then he withdrew in 16 and I thought my suspicions were confirmed. Crazy that here we are with him going for 5 in a row again next year o_O what a KING.

Yep. The amount of people that don't believe this at this point in time after all we've seen is absolute comedy. Rafa is a runaway favourite at RG for the next 2-3 years at least as you said. I need to see him at least pushed to a 5th set and preferably losing before I even entertain the thought that he may actually be losing his grip there.

People say it's total insanity that he could win 15-16-17 RG, but it's already insanity that he has 13. There's no reason to believe he won't win anymore. 14 is a lock IMO, and 15 isn't that far off. A few more years with no serious challenger and you're looking at the 16-17 range if he schedules properly for instance.

My viewpoint is relative here. Like you said if Fed can do it then Nadal can too, and at an even scarier clip since he's way better/more dominant at RG than Fed is at Wimbledon.

RAFA is 100% taking over Fed. It’s not even a debate anymore
