I really hope Nadal never plays this "tournament" again

Because I actually remember Djokovic almost reaching the semifinals in 2011 with 1 win. (1 very close win, and in one of his losses he was totally destroyed). But when it comes to Nadal he never gets out of the group unless he has 3 wins, and even then they try to find reasons to keep him out.

But he didn’t make it out of the group...
The semifinals are the 4 who make it out of the groups....all 8 players ALMOST reach the semis lol it’s the tourney format sorry mate

Looks like we are going over and over again, in a circle. Bottom line, I get the rules and I just think they are stupid. Djokovic destroyed the field last year and then lost a final to Zverev who was totally destroyed by him earlier in the tournament. Not that I'm complaining about that result, but that's not what should happen in a normal tournament.

West Indies destroyed India in 1983 World Cup group stage. India beat West Indies in the final and took the trophy. I was too young to know what is Cricket but this is what happened then. There is nothing abnormal with this!

Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic in 2015 in the round robin stage but lost in the final. But I didn't complain then or felt like Roger Federer was "robbed" of the title. Novak Djokovic was indeed the worthy and deserving winner.

These rules in the WTF are same for the last fifty years or so. So to make it sound like they "did" it to screw Rafa is baseless and childish. There is nothing wrong with round robin format either. It's used in premier sporting events of the world. It helps the fans to see more matches between best players

Sometimes you can tell exactly what the thread is about just from reading the title. I KNEW the OP would be full of whingeing over the RR format. Well, Nadal has the format to thank for letting him bow out with dignity else his story would have ended with a straight set loss to Zverev. Of course, had that happened, Nadal would have been injured. Healthy Nadal never lost.

I don't get this thread.

There are rules, and these are applied correctly. Nadal isn't in SF because Zverev and Tsitsipas got better resultss, that's simple.
Nadal got destroyed by Zverev. The score could have been even more severe than 6/2 6/4.
And he won against Tsitsipas who was already 100% sure to be in SF. I cannot certify Nadal would have won this match if Tsitsipas had to secure his place in SF.
Zverev and Tsitsipas both won 2 matches in 2 sets, Nadal won 2 matches in 3 sets. They have a better set-average. The rules are the rules.
A player can win 1 of his 3 RR matches and end up winning the title, just like he can win 2 of the 3 matches and be eliminated. It has always bee this way.

Let's see. I feel like tearing this apart.

The years Nadal played are 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019.

The only years he didn't get out of the RR were 2009, 2011, 2017 and 2019.

In 2009 he lost all three matches.

In 2011 he did the exact same as Djokovic which you were just complaining about: barely beating Fish, getting destroyed by Fed and losing a tight one to Tsonga. And Djokovic didn't make the semi, you calling it "almost" doesn't mean anything.

In 2017 he lost one tight match and just pulled out of the tournament, that's not the tournament's fault (nor are any other of his many withdrawals).

2019 is the only time he won two matches and didn't reach the semi, and even then the other two-match winners, yes including Fed, had better set win-loss records, helps that Fed won both his RR wins in straights which includes Djokovic.

In 2006 and 2007 he reached the semi's while losing a RR match. In 2010, 2013 and 2015 he reached the semi's because he won all three of his RR's, makes sense doesn't it!

You don't like the tournament format, I've got no problem with that. I quite like it, given that you've got the best 8 players in the world competing. But tastes differ.

What doesn't make sense is to pretend the tournament format is somehow _objectively_ worse than knockout, or that it somehow disadvantaging a particular player.

It isn't.

year end tournament never made any sense once the sport became too physical and baseline oriented.......it is often a test of tired and worn out players’ patience in cold weather and dark indoor arenas.......such a sad exhibition event which needs to be scrapped from the new decade.......

Don’t think any Rafa fan goes around saying indoor HC is Rafas best surface.
he is unlucky WTF isnt on any other surface. Even grass is better for him than this.

Then Federer is unlucky there aren't more grass masters and the tour mafioso slowed down all the surfaces.

To complain about WTF surfaces is height of out of touch hypocrisy. No one has benefitted more from modern tour than Rafa.

Why do you think they slowed down surfaces?

I hope the tennis mafia eliminate grass for good. Too hard for young tennis players to get practice on it.

Tsitsipas would have lost to Nadal anyway, even if it had been a knock-out match. Nadal was just too good for him and Tsitsipas could not break his serve to save his life. 0 BP's in the match.

@mike danny The funny thing is that you wrote a few days ago that Federer should never play WTF again. But when I say the same about Nadal you think I'm wrong.

Look, if Nadal went home after the match against Zverev I would be obviously disappointed, but I'd say it's fair. He lost, he leaves the tournament. It is annoying though that Nadal kept fighting so hard in the other 2 matches when he knew he is probably going out of the tournament anyway.

Awww, the poor babies. Can't get anything done themselves so they need external help, which is why we have tournaments like the Next Gen finals.

Becker, Edberg, Borg and others have managed to adapt to grass just fine and they were younger than today's top Next Gen contenders.

I said that out of disappointment of his performance, not because the rules are unfair or antthing.

I was just an idiot, but I didn't diminish the tournament or its rules ;)

Tough luck. 2 other guys performed better than him. It happens. That's the nature of sports.

Grass is the surface of kings. Lawn tennis played hundreds of years ago led to tennis. I don't expect an ignorant Nadal fangirl, who probably only likes him for his Latin looks and biceps to understand the history of the game though.

Comical and telling stuff really. Eliminate grass LOL.

Saving a matchpoint, coming back from 5-1 down, spending 3 hours against Tsitsipas to get another win and all that was WASTED TIME AND ENERGY. There is only one tournament where such a pathetic scenario is possible. Just to think Djokovic could keep fighting after saving matchpoints and winning back to back 3 setters in Rome. He could fight for the title until the last point.

Nadal should never play this "tournament" again. It doesn't deserve him. Even if he wins 3 matches in his group they will find a reason why he shouldn't play in the semifinals.

Congratulations to Nadal on YE#1 and now it's time to prepare for 2020, to play at tournaments where the conditions are fair for all players, where you can't lose a match and go out while another player loses a match and wins the title.
Well, now he can head home for some Xisca time and a little "marital bliss."

Moo.
"It’s safe to say that grass isn’t the most popular surface in tennis. Ever since former world No.1 Manuel Santana coined the famous phrase that “Grass is just for cows”, many other players have echoed it. These players include the likes of Ivan Lendl, Marat Safin, Marcelo Ríos, and even Jan Kodeš."

The thing is that Nadal fans can't stand that we Fed fans can be happy even if Fed is doing well in non important tournaments.
In the end it's about me having fun that's why I WIN. I'm happier than Nadal and his fans.

Rules are rules but they need to change them.

Why does the guy who plays the most exciting matches (3 setters that last till the end) get punished? A win is a win. If everyone is tied with the same record, the higher seed should pass. These guys busted their @sses all year for a higher seed and just because someone wins their matches easier moves on?? Ok.

I have to disagree here. Although I agree that it is a bit weird that one could win an individual tournament in tennis whilst losing a match (I'd rather they make it straight KO but with BO5 sets and points for finishing 3th and 4th) it is Rafa's own fault (or bad luck if you will) that he is out of the tournament.

I agree so much. We should not allow them to even use rackets and balls. And they should be playing on a track instead on a court. Also, they should just run all the time, entire point should just be running. That way the most exciting guy Monfils would be nr.1.

I see your frustration. Your replies are getting more bitter as this match goes on and your god down a set and break. I actually believe Fed can come back, it's not gonna be easy to break back but he can, he did it once already.

Just relax buddy. Have no fear, celebrate this great tournament because your god has won it a million times and I will downplay it as Rafa has not.

Makes perfect sense. The other guys in Nadal's group won their matches easier against the same guys Nadal struggled against.

Since they were up against the same guys as Nadal and won easier, it makes perfect sense for them to be better.
