Is Sascha Zverev now the "locker room #1"?

I think, yes.
The other players know that it is most probably him who ended or is about to end the Fedalovic reign. That will give him a lot of respect among his peers.
Maybe his surge will even hasten the retirement of the Big Three who won't like a next gen player being in the driver seat now.

No one is good at best of 5 until he wins a slam these days simply because that's the only place you mostly see it. So saying someone is no good at it before a slam is won is really unfair.

The structure of the ATP itself slows down development of success in long matches. But then it favors players who master it and keeps them relevant for a longer time.

Let him get a top 10 win in slams ONCE, for starters. Then we will talk about "ending Fedalovic reign".

If Zverev didn't choke when realizing he could win in the USO final, but also in most of the sets against Djokovic at the AO, and if he could have use better the momentum he had at the beginning of fifth set against Tsitsipas at the FO, Zod could have maybe at least 2 slams already . But he's mentally incredibly weak so... He needs to find the perfect coach for him but dunno who that could be

How many slams has he won?

For me it's all about what's between the ears with Z - which can definitely get better with more maturity - but especially confidence.

He's got the physicality and the game to sit at the top of the rankings as Novak and Rafa slow with aging, and a win or two at a Slam would probably go a long way toward fixing his mental issues.

Zverev is satisfied that he, in his view, has achieved the highest of heights by winning a gold medal (which comes with 0 prize money and 0 ranking points). He will have no hunger to go further. Retirement coming soon.

I don't like Zverev but surely everyone must think he's going to win a slam, he's won everything apart from a slam, some vulture job will arise sooner or later when Djokovic is done

Zverev Kyrgios combined could have ended the GOAT era. Yet here we are in 2021 with the GOATs having won 17/18 last slams. (1 win was with the GOATs absent). Zverev even choked his maiden final.

True but Zverev is an extreme case, as he has won four MS events + the tour finals + the Olympics over a span of four and a bit years but never beaten a top ten player in a slam.

there is nothing like the same discrepancy for his peers. Medvedev and Tsitsipas, for example, have slam results that are closer to mirroring their results in best of three.

my hypothesis is that Zverev can’t handle his blood sugar well in longer matches. (Several of my family members have diabetes, as does one of my two cats. I inject her with insulin twice daily).

That makes sense actually now that I think of it. Could be a reason.

I bet it's all about hormones.
His chokeronine level is too high.

He's good at best of 3 sets. Has trouble with concentration and focus in best of 5 sets, for whatever reason, with theories ranging from undiagnosed diabetes to his generation being obsessed with social media. He was doing well in some of the biggest best of 3 sets tournaments several years ago, so he's been doing that for a while. He and his team need to find out why the best of 5 sets thing isn't working anywhere near as well.

I thought he did have a diabetes diagnosis? Doesn’t he carry a pump on court?

Probably gets too comfortable in BO5. The RG semis was atrocious. He threw away set 1 and 2. He was at least on equal footing from the game standpoint.

Also all the early 5 setters vs unseeded players. He doesn't have the eye of the tiger. Gets too comfortable. You can call it mental weaknesses as well.

Vs big 3 in bo3, he knows he can rarely stay passive and win so goes for the kill. This was one of his only wins vs big 3 that was a comeback win. Usually if he loses a set vs them he loses..

1-11 when he loses set 1 vs big 3.. only win came during Olympics. So he knows he has to win set 1. Even if he does that, he has been beaten 5/6 times after taking set 1. Twice by Djokovic in 2021 itself.

He had the perfect coach but constantly showed up late for practices and was disrespectful to a legend of the game. This caused Ivan to dump his ungrateful ass after only two weeks.

He also had a former number one player in JFC who fired him because he was late and rude. Ditto with David Ferrer. No top-tier coach will work with this brat because of his personality issues. And this has been eloquently proven.

Indeed, but the mystery for me is, if he's so arrogant and full of himself why is he so mentally weak in big matches? That's the part I can't understand with Zverev.

Yep, confirmed, the Olympics is being highly overrated by some people. This was just another rinky-dink event, which proves nothing regardless of the winner. The tour is a marathon, not a sprint, which is why it makes no sense to have tennis in the Olympics. Many events, such as track or swimming, have the Olympics as a denouement to their seasons. Not so for tennis. There's no connection to the larger context.

If he consistently plays like he did against Novak and Khachanov, there's nothing stopping him from winning 5+ slams.

However, it would be prudent to have doubts.

I don't see the correlation. Why can't someone be arrogant as hell and still choke? That's what makes Zverev detestable. He acts as if he has had the career of the big three when he needs diapers to get anywhere near even one slam trophy.

Djokovic has won the last 3 slams and best Zverev with a torn ab at one of them. There’s no doubt who the best player on the planet is.

He seems to get along very well with other players, and the only allegations of arrogance I have only read on TTW. There was a guy who claimed he asked Zverev for an autograph and got snubbed. He was waging a crusade against him a couple of years ago. I personally find him very likable, and he seems to be shy or introverted, which would explain why some here find him arrogant.

Humbert is one of the few who I think of as introverted immediately, and I've never heard him called arrogant.
