Praga.- The mythical former Czech player Ivan Lendl assured today that he looks forward to the return to the courts of the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, out because of knee problems since June.

Lendl, said today that for sure Spain will miss Nadal, but that his presence Could have been counterproductive as well.

“I think we have to see what Rafael Nadal they’d have”, the 52 year old former player said in a ceremony with the teammates with whom he won the Davis Cup in 1980: Pavel Slozil, Jan Kodes and Tomas Smid.

“Having the Rafael Nadal who was physically fine during the year is obviously better than the Rafael Nadal who would have come back here to play his first match in six months. That would be very, very difficult, even for a player like Rafa”.

“I hope he can come back at 100%” he said about the former numer one, who’s starting to train to come back in late December.

“I want him to come back. He’s a great champion and a very good person. I like to see him and I hope he’s fine and comes back soon”.

Lendl, who remained away from tennis since he retired nearly two decades ago, came back a year ago as Couch of Murray, who in September won his first Grand Slam.

He just wants Nadal to come back so Andy can beat up on him and start the h2h reversal. Lendl knows that he's doing. Lol.

I'm a little surprised by his comments tbh, 'cause I haven't gotten the impression that Nadal likes him much. He sounded very unenthusiastic when asked about Murray hiring Lendl, and even now he said he doesn't think Andy won the USO because of Lendl...

I think it's simple, Nadal is a great player and Lendl probably see it as a challenge and is curious if his coaching/tactical preparation can make the difference in Rafa's matches against Murray.

I mean you don't think Lendl started coaching Murray to pay the bills or something? He probably finds the tennis scene (witch which he's involved through Murray) more interesting/exciting with Nadal around.

True. Rafa and Murray haven't even played since Lendl started coaching Murray.
I was thinking also about the more personal comments Lend made there though.

I think you're right. The Murray-Lendl duo has beaten Fed and Nole in two big finals this year. Lendl probably sees Nadal as the remaining challenge.

that's the politically correct answer. If Lendl had said, I don't want Nadal to come back, a lot of people would get mad :)

Just like a lot of the Federer/Murray fans here at talk tennis, Lendl is scared of Nadal and anxious to find out whether Nadal will once again eliminate Murray in 3 slams in the year (as he did in 2011). Nadal is the greatest threat of all men.

I think perhaps Lendl genuinely cares about Nadal, he's gotten older, ya know?

Lendl wants Rafa back so the ITF won't be rigging every slam draws in 2013 pitting Murray against Fed leaving Nole with a virtual cakewalk.

I think if anything, the ITF would want Fed to have the cakewalk draw so he can get to the finals :)
