Federer loses a match in non-slam event, or even struggled in his win, the sky is falling. Roddick won a tournament with Connors, and getting close in one match against Federer, he is going to challenge Federer. Nadal got to Wimbledon finals two years in a row, he is going to take over No. 1 from Federer. Another player gets on a hot streak, he is going to be this and that. Another player struggles for various reasons, he is going to fall off the tour.

These are typical postings on this board. Get a clue. Many of your claims in the last few years haven't come to fruition. Federer is still on top, the rest of them are still chasing. Federer will fall eventually, not because what you said, but because of natural aging process of a player. Federer spoiled so many people in the last a few years. He is doing better at this point this year than he did in both 2004 and 2005 in slams.

Yes, but there is a reason for this: Message boards are really nothing but a place to gossip. It's big news for us if Fed loses after he dominated the tourney last year, so we post (not that I'm condoning it, just looking at it from the other persons side of view).

Well said. Completely agree. I don't think that the posters are shortsighted, I think it has more to do with their ability not to see that Federer is awesome at what he does. People will always hate on another guy when he is the best in a sport.

It's another to post about his losses, but it's another thing to say that his career is over and that he is not going to win another Slam.

Whoa, missed those threads (or ignored them). Then yes, some posters are REALLY short sighted. Doubt that Fed is going to go Wilander on us.

Very true. But the short-sightedness goes well beyond this board into most aspects of society. The stock market is currently 'correcting' - and some act like the world is going to end. In general, people in the US (most of the posters on this board) don't have a good grasp of 'the long view.'

I'd agree with this - but only to an extent. Some of the silly things that are said are obviously not thought out at all. Like Jim Rome, of sports talk radio says, "Think before you hit the Send button" and "Have a take and don't s_ck!"

Very true. IMO these people are not doing too well outside of their online lives, and get a kick out of sounding like experts - especially when so many people respond like they actually are experts. Effing kids man, they 'll eventually grow up.

the tennis guy, you're almost absolutely right...there are so many overreactions on this board...

you note that federer is doing better at the slams this year than in 2004 and 2005...and that is so amazing, the thought (and reality) that federer has made the final of every slam he has played since wimbledon in 2005...and he's reached the semifinals or higher of every slam since wimbledon 2004...

what would be a mind-blowing (yet another..) record would be if federer wins the us open this year....his 3rd 3-slam year, 6 slams in 2 years(2006-2007), 8 slams in 3 years(2005-2007), and 12 slams in such a short 4 year period(2003-2007)

Agreed. Sad thing number one: some of them aren't kids. Sad thing number two: a few of them might have some measure of expertise--but their consistent abrasiveness renders their posts unreadable.

I agree with you tennis guy. I remember after Federer lost, I saw threads about how Federer should retire. Haha.

Fed has to much composure to go wilander on us. Even though I don't like him that much he still is an outstanding player. Everyone has to like him just a little 'cause when he plays and he's on he's godlike and it's just so beautiful.

Yeah, although I would like someone to take away a few more tourneys from him so that he can be 'godlike' only at the grand slams. ;)

I agree completely. Someone strings together a few wins and suddenly they are one of the greats. Some posters need to get some perspective on results and to do that they need to to study their history of the game. Then they may understand that even winning a major is no guarantee of top fligt play let alone a lesser tour event.

Think about people like Brian Teacher, Mark Edmondson and Gastón Gaudio. Then compare their careers with Juan Carlos Ferrero or Vitas Gerulaitis. They all won one slam but the quality of play for the later two represented by a longer series of good results is indesputable.

If you form opinions on players based on to smaller a sample of play it can be misleading to put it mildly. Personally for me to consider someone number 1 in the world would take a minimum of one years results and even then to achieve it in that time scale the player would have to be massively dominant. Realistically two years is closer to the mark.

To be fair though this attitude is prevelant even within the administration of te game. I mean Lleyton Hewitt recently ranked outside top 20, Venus Willliams recently rated outside top 30, even the official ratigs are geared to suffer from acute miopia.

I agree with your premise here, but come to think of it, isn't this thread a little knee-jerk too?

I mean, I'm a big Federer fan, but I would take the Cincy results with a bit of salt as far as "domination" goes - firstly, there were hardly any seeds left - no Djoko or Nadal for example. Secondly, Federer struggled (despite the conditions, which affected everyone equally) with UEs. Third, the Blake final, even for a Fed fan, was a joke - not only is it a good matchup for Fed, but Blake does not have what it takes mentally to take it to Fed.

So I would reserve too much jubilation until the USO is over and the trophy securely in Fed's hands.

Federer is now like Tiger Woods, he insn't playing against the filed he is playing aginst history. He uses these tournaments to warm up for the Grand Slams. Unless something crazy happens I don't see anyone challeging him at the Open this year. Probably the only two players he is concerned about is Djokovic and Hewitt because those are the only two that have stood toe to toe with him in these tournaments.

I also do not see Nadal having a good US Open again. For some reason he seems to play better in the spring hardcourt season then the summer.

Of course people here are short sighted. A lot of people here think that Sampras was good in his day, but wouldn't have survived in today's game. Didn't he win a Slam like, 5 years ago? But on this board, 2002 is considered to be ancient history. From the way people talk about Rod Laver, you'd think he played in the 1800's with long pants, not in the 60's with Beatlemania.

The thread was created before the final at Cincy. It really doesn't matter whether Federer wins or loses at Cincy and Montreal, it is his performance at US Open that counts. That's the whole point.

This is true and is amazing the amount of threads that are created after a big upset, it doesnt matter if it is Fed, Nadal, etc, it doesnt matter if it is ATP or WTA. It is actually really anoying. I think it is because, as somebody else said, we have here a large amount of kids, who think it is normal the existance of somebody like Fed. For them if he loose the world would be upside down. The fact is, it is rather normal for a tennis player to loose, and eventually all of the big star of today wont be tomorrow, that is how every dominant player stop being such and a new one emerge, it is just natural.

Fed loosing is not a big deal, however it does indicate something.

Just go look at some of the threads a few days after he lost to Djokovic. People were writing Fed off. There are too many to list.

Id say this is only because we are all expecting him to drop the performance, it has to happen sometimes, now or latter. now every loss is a sign, so lets say when he is defeated people are thinking is this it, is he going to drop mentally or playingwise in next few months up to half a year. He has to sometimes, can not dominate for 10 years, so lets say its only normal.

Especially when beaten or pushed to the edge by young guns, they are proving themselves this way, baghdatis, murray, djokovic, gasquet etc.

Now I know I am the ONLY one to disagree with you but I think this way, I have the right to. Also I am against such threads as - should he retire or crap like that but asking questions about is he on a down or still maintaining the level of play he has for a few years, those are ok threads.

I understand all of what you just said. What I said in my in my post was that people were righting Federer off. Nothing about Djokovic or anything like that. I just don't like that fact that when he loses it is like all hell breaks loose and suddenly he isn't the great player that he was. I just don't understand the stupidity of some people.

I belieev in people having the rigth to think whatever they like and I just throw facts, which I think are relevant - back at thema nd thats it. Many of the posters here are kids, this could benefit them if they are playing and want to become good.
