McEnroe wants matches to be shorter

Most people don’t want to sit down and watch a 5 hour match. I love tennis but that’s too much tennis.

Here’s a radical idea, first couple of rounds, if the higher seed wins the first 2 sets, match is over. It’s a waste of time to watch someone routinely win 3 straight sets against an overmatched opponent.

I would be somewhat okay with R1-R3 being BO3. R4-F should always be BO5 though.

I wonder what the injury rate is in slams. I enjoy 5 set epics, but I also must admit that a shorter format until the F or QFs would bring a lot of benefits...
  • less draws falling apart due to player injury withdrawal
  • less MTOs
  • higher quality tennis and less of two guys limping around between points
  • no more nightmare scheduling when a match unexpectedly goes long, which decreases viewership and the quality of play for the players waiting on standby for 1-4 hours
  • potentially higher viewership (i know a lot of TTW would disagree...but let's face it, live viewership for a full 3-5 hour tennis match is pretty low)
even team sports like basketball, soccer, or american football, where the individual athlete's body is much less taxed and still have lots of stop and go action, rarely go over 3 hours, and those sports still struggle with injuries too.

what % of tennis viewership is actually full matches and not just the 3-10 minute free highlights on youtube?

I'm in favor of shorter matches. I wouldn't mind seeing 4 games to win a set instead of 6, etc etc.

It's pretty clear that the men's tour players are not getting through these long events without having serious physical problems.

It's even worse when they are supposed to play doubles along with these marathon singles matches.

Endless baseline bashing is the problem. More S&V solves it. Use drastic measures like landmines on the baseline or rackets giving an electric discharge to players if they don't hit a volley 20 seconds after the point started.
Lol

With how much a lot of the current players fear to come to the net, the landmines might be the only solution.

See, what we need, what TENNIS needs, is for Big Sash to win multiple slams, and then he will fight valiantly to protect the longer form of the game.

Tennis authorities have the same problem baseball ones do. If someone doesn’t like your sport having less of it won’t make them like it. It will just tick off the current fans.

Mac's wanted BO3 ever since Lendl came back from two sets down against him in the '84 FO final. Had that match been BO3, he would have been crowned Roland Garros champion. So self serving of the brat.

Awful idea, and would dilute the prestige that tennis majors have left. Those tiebreaks at the end of doubles' matches have ruined their credibility. In those doubles matches, you have 2 whole sets, and if it's 1 set all, you then have the lottery/penalty shootout of a tiebreak, which is most unsatisfactory for determining who is the better team.

We'd be better off with sets played until 4 instead of 6 games. I'd 100% prefer that.

However, this should have been implemented earlier... like a century earlier.

Too late now to make such drastic changes. You alter the scoring system drastically and all the records and comparisons go down the toilet, or at least many of them.

I hope they don't make that change until after Nadal is retired. No need to infect his slam record with slams won the nancy-boy way :happydevil:

In an era where the ridiculous is the canon, I am afraid we will soon kiss the 5-set matches goodbye
And the credibility of tennis majors with it. If the authorities aren't going to treat it seriously, why should the fans?

Having a deciding set be just a tiebreak is ridiculous! You may as well decide the match on a coin toss.

John McEnroe talks so much that he often says whatever nonsense comes into his brain at any given moment.
