Pressure must be enormous on Ian. People expect great things from an Internet coach. GSG on the other hand will be playing freely without pressure.

If Ian wins, everyone will say that was expected. But if he loses, there will be lots of comments about Internet coaches. Lose-lose situation.

Other Internet coaches will be watching this carefully.

His channel will grow bigger, regardless of the result imo

Ian sum of strengths is the kind of matchup that is tough for GSG.
- lefty
- good depth control and placement
-patient
- solid volleys and net game

In some ways Ian is the more developed-stroke version of GSG.

No they haven't. That was just fanfiction, but pretty good.
Here is mine (not as exciting):
They play the match. No live streaming. If Ian wins, it'll be posted a VERY long time after the match, in small segments, to milk the cow as much as possible. If he loses, the match won't be posted (or at least not in its entirety).

My bet is that he'll post it the same was as he's posted every other match, whether he played or not, regardless of who wins: a highlight reel then each set separated by a few days.

I don't think Ian feels any pressure. After years of hitting against his students who hit junk balls - he will calmly take GSG apart. Tennis Troll would do much better against Ian then GSG will do. So would that two hand forehand guy..

After Ian beats the GSG he can do all kinds of cool videos about how he did it. It's great for Ian - will build up his channel.. The only risk is if he loses to GSG he loses a lot of credibility. But I don't think the gap is close enough to allow that. Ian played in college Div. II is not that bad - so has some actual tennis pedigree..
Ian is older then he looks so he is lacking the physicality needed against some of the hard hitters. But he still moves well..

They are both 4.5 players.
The match should be very close.

4.5 varies widely across the spectrum; just because both are 4.5 doesn't mean the match will be close.

GSG has the following going for him:
- Extreme consistency and therefore very few errors
- Stamina
- The mental toughness to be out there as long as it takes
- Plenty of recent match experience

Ian's biggest edge is style matchup: he's the only S&V/C&C type that GSG has faced, to my knowledge. The shots that would keep a BLer pinned back would be volley putaway opportunities for a net crasher. So if he does decide to attack the net, it will come down to his net game vs GSG's ground game. In that case, my money's on Ian.

I'm biased, of course, because that's my game style also and if I played GSG, I would have the same game plan: spend as little time as possible trading GSs from the BL and get into the net by any means possible.

Ian wins no matter what on this, because this is about viewership for the channel. There will be lingering issues to find this kind of hype again, but was smart to key into the popularity of Ben. We will ALL watch and I expect it will be fun in any case.

Ian talked about this in the live chat on one of the latest his videos. He said he is expecting to tell a story of GSG as he is playing 4 matches. And I bet he is trying to make and hype up the match more with him and GSG. We will see. :)

If he uses his net rushing skills he will win.

It's the 76 Wins guy on the tennistroll channel that plays amazing tennis who I want to see more of. Hacking is cool but I think we should celebrate dedication to the sport & talent as well.

The primary concern is how someone recovering from a foot injury will manage to chase down drop shots, lobs and "dead" balls to the corners.
It's a "win" if the match completes in full. Everything else is a bonus and can weave a great story irrespective of the scores.

Ian should win this. He definitely has advantage on this indoor court, and likes the overheads. He is also very familiar with the whole setup/environment, which is almost like a recording studio than a tennis court.

But..... I think the better win for Ian would be if he lose this match.....train for couple of months.... and bring GSG again and win that match.
This will allow more content (including all the future training, things he found as issues in the first GSG match, and fixing it, and then implementing/executing it in the second match) and more drama for Ian, which seems to be the way Ian is directing Essential tennis channel towards.

One thing I really like about Ian is, he is willing to think differently, and make use of the internet age differently. He knows that people are not going to "pay" big for all the content anymore in this age, and instead of trying to fight for dimes with other internet coaches, he is leading the way to a new tennis reality enterntainment, and experimenting to see if that makes more $$$. Again he does that all these in a transparent way (without making shady claims, like 120mph serve in 10 days). In the end he has a family to feed. If he can make $$ , have fun, do things he like and make it enjoyable to audience at the same time, it is a win for all.

If Ian wins, everyone will say that was expected. But if he loses, there will be lots of comments about Internet coaches. Lose-lose situation.

I recall @dimkin attended as well. Is it really 2 grand per day? Did it include hotel and food and transportation?

I attended the TTT guys session and it was 1500 ... yes .. overpriced ... and yes it wasn't worth it ...
But I got to visit palm springs ... saw some pros practice ... played some tennis ... all-in-all a positive experience

Simon and Alex are very strong players and good teachers.

Ian vs Me would be a close call play-wise (with an edge to Ian ... I hate lefties)

Wow... was that just the fee for the hitting of the day on the courts ex. hotel/food?
For that money you could just slow-mo video all your strokes + points and send to an online coach for review... and then get 10-15h with an ex-ATP pro.

No idea why anyone thinks Ian's credibility will be hurt is he loses. If he loses, it will be the greatest thing that ever happened to his channel. In fact, he should script it that way deliberately. Lose to junker. Train to beat junker. Lose to junker anyway. Train more to beat junker. Still lose. Eventually, beat junker. This is the story of every tennis player ever. There is a reason GSG is more well known than a top 25 ATP player. Garin? Ruud? I'll take MEP over them!

Just scanned through the video (too long to watch full). But seems like the the summary is the match is Ian's overhead/volley vs @GSG s lobs/passingshots.
And I agree @GSG should go for more passing shots, especially since this is indoor court (even though this court has enough height, it can still make you hit the lob too shallow).

One surprising stat the guy brought up is Ians forehand vulnerability. That was something I did not think of, and it does not even seem like Ian is practicing his forehands as much (except for hitting low pressure ground stroke rallies). With GSGs neutral shots naturally having some backspin (and unorthodox compared to Ians hitting partners), it is going to be interesting to see how many forehand errors Ian will make in the match. On top of that when you see the speed of this neutral ball, your mind will tell you to crush it (more reasons to make UE).

That's awesome. Ian is being analyzed and scrutinized as much as some top ATP pros. I love it.

Good reminder, that what we think our strength may be letting us down if we are not self-aware/mindful of what is happening on the court.

No doubt that, Ian has a good forehand, as well as good serve (for the level of play). So even though they might have been bad statistically in previous matches, with some slight adjustments on execution mindset and possibly some getting into rythm, they have potential to come back as weapons.

Ian vs MEP is going on right now according to one of Ian's friend's instagram, Mark.

So was it his third match of the day ? If so that's not very fair ! Or did he play the two others yesterday ?
