Monfils admit that he has no real chance of winning the French Open

confidence does play a part, but i think he lacks the solidness on aggressive baseline strokes on both wings.

He doesn’t have the big spin FH like Thiem or Ruud (leaving Nadal out of this since he is an anomaly), nor the big flat Fh like Delpo or Agut. What these players have in common is that they regularly close out points after several consecutive huge FHs.

and it’s even worse on his BH side. Against any decent twohanders, he comes up short. And that’s his technique, for sure.

all this doesn’t mean he can’t win tournaments, but he has to embrace he’d more like his compatriote Simon than Tsonga

Don‘t agree about the lack of forehand action. Monfils has tremendous putaway power particularly on flat shots. I rememer some rockets from his Monte Carlo final against Nadal.

You are right about his record being in the lower ranks. But one slam exploit would change that. I mean, Cilic is a slam winner...

Monfils playing a DelPossum. Putting a beat down on Djokovic at the moment. Let's see if he follows form and chokes this match away.

I'm not saying he can't hammer in a huge FH from time to time, it's just that he can't do it repeatedly.

There are not so many effective FH strategies, but the one that falls into the category of "constant full power barrage", as seen with Thiem, Rublev, Kachanov, Evans, Ruud, Berretini, and Struff, requires the ability to keep your foot 100% on the gas pedal, esp. when meeting the brand of FH strategy, that can be characterized as "when pressured, wait and counterpunch, neutralize and go for the winner at the right time = Goffin, Djokovic, Nadal, Medvedev

Most think of Nadal in the same manner as Monfils, remembering those blastering FH from outside the train lines, but it's his patient defensive game, opening up for the winner. What the most successful players have in common, is their ability to close the point, but even more so, their ability to know when the time is right.

Monfils is def best, playing the brand of tennis that Djokovic does, but since he can't produce the same type of angles as Djokovic on a constant basis, he will fall short.

Again, I think there‘s nothing inherently wrong with his game, but his mental strength (as highlighted by his recent loss against Djok after having match points).

not sure we’re seeing the same things.

I can’t recall seeing Monfils pin down a backhand crosscourt with his FH and drawing out an error with share, consistent power - nor have I seen him redirect pace, producing angled winners (djoko style). Nor does he come up with many aces. I don’t think that’s a mental thing, but a technical one.

TTW when 0 slam 0 threat Monfils blows a match: I feel so bad for him, what a guy, so honest and refreshing.

TTW when 20 slam winner Federer blows a match: What a choker lol! Legacy is done, deleted, finito! Chokerer is such a mental midget. I’m burning my RF hat tonight. Weak era mug pug and slug.

Never change, TTW.
Interesting bonus thought exercise: the things that would be said if you replace Monfils with Fed in that Dubai match. Same result.
