confidence does play a part, but i think he lacks the solidness on aggressive baseline strokes on both wings.
He doesn’t have the big spin FH like Thiem or Ruud (leaving Nadal out of this since he is an anomaly), nor the big flat Fh like Delpo or Agut. What these players have in common is that they regularly close out points after several consecutive huge FHs.
and it’s even worse on his BH side. Against any decent twohanders, he comes up short. And that’s his technique, for sure.
all this doesn’t mean he can’t win tournaments, but he has to embrace he’d more like his compatriote Simon than Tsonga
Don‘t agree about the lack of forehand action. Monfils has tremendous putaway power particularly on flat shots. I rememer some rockets from his Monte Carlo final against Nadal.
You are right about his record being in the lower ranks. But one slam exploit would change that. I mean, Cilic is a slam winner...
