I've always had sleep issues. Earlier had problems falling asleep, and then would be unable to get up. The entire day would go by in a sleepy state.

Since about a month, I fall asleep fine, but then get up in an hour or so and then am wide awake all night. Of course, it is impossible to get through the day.

So once or twice a week I started take half a valium, it helped. But if i did not take it, I could not sleep. So i decided to take it for a week every night so i can get out of this thing. But today is the second or third night, and I am awake after an hour. It had no effect.

I don't want to get into sleeping pills. I still feel groggy after having slept using a valium.

btw, I am used to having just one mild coffee at 9 AM or so. I've stopped that for the last 3 days. I've cut sugar almost completely (except for fruit). My blood tests are all normal. Only my HBA1C is now 5.7 (last year 5.1).

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked if you have sleep apnea?

You need a Peaceful Sureshsian Release(TM)

Joel might be able to help you.

Jokes aside, taking Valium is one of the worst things you can do if you have insomnia. Some people can't ever stop taking it, and even if you can it's hard to ween yourself off it.

An absolute dark and quiet room, exercise, a balanced diet, and (unfortunately for you :D ) a clean conscience and strenuous sexual activity help.

Pretend you have jet lag by try to stay up as long as you can, then crash on the bed - sleep for 24 hours+ straight! Then go to bed say at 10:00 P.M. and get up at 7:00 A.M. keep doing this routine until your body clock adjust! Even if you are not sleepy keep do it!

Try melatonin. I go through the same rough cycles and this evened me out.
I'll try this out. Amazon does carry it here, and I'll see if my drugstore has it.

I actually shifted to a different multivitamin since this new one has magnesium. I read that it helps in cramps and i have really bad leg cramps. Since the last couple months my leg cramps have reduced/almost gone but I have started getting really nasty foot cramps -- both sides of feet. I am also having a banana daily.

I can't do all this -- I have a lot of duties that start at 7 AM and go on till 11pm at least.

That's what is worrying me. I was taking half a valium 2, the smallest they have.

Are you and Tom trying to kill me (put me to sleep) or help me sleep.

Guys, this is a serious problem, don't make this a tribute thread, lol.

I've had mild insomnia before I just read threads on here until I fall asleep. No joke.

My friend described similar symptoms as you, turned out to be sleep apnea.

Dietary intake is not enough, Senti - doctors say that we need at least 400 mg daily regardless the dietary intake!

Do you watch television before going to bed? If so, avoid that. Don't stare at any screen. As @Sudacafan pointed out, sleep apnea may be waking you up as well. You might want to check on that. Also a glass of warm milk with honey before bed helps.

Also, use blue light filter on your computer and cell phone for late at night.

I do have to. I show a movie to my mom before dinner, and then for half an hour after till she nods off.
She is having the same problem. She also falls asleep for half an hour or so and then is awake most or all of the night. She's been having this problem for over a year, maybe two.

And i might check tennis scores on my mobile, or do some reading on my laptop before sleeping. But whether I do or not, the sleep issue remains the same.

I just read up on it a bit and it seems to have to do with snoring and breathing.
This has suddenly started a month or two back.

I have sleep apnea and it’s been a long time before I was diagnosed. The CPAP made a great difference for me.

Avoid any caffeine.

Drink chamomile or chrysanthemum tea.

If you live in a noisy area, wear ear plugs or small sized noise cancelling headphones.

Eat a lot of kangkung (morning glory leaves) for dinner.

It's not a breathing issue. The mind is intensely aware at night even though I may not be thinking at all, or have anything to think.

Avoid melatonin. You can take magnesium but not much.
Don't make a habit of staying in bed if you are not sleeping. Get up and get tired.
Make slow adjustment and it will come in time.
Think of what's bothering you, don't try to ignore it.
It seems you are not able to relax. Try to identify what makes you relaxed.

Practice taking slow very deep loud breaths - it helps for sure. Continue till you fall asleep.

Try to switch off your mind, failing that think of something real boring.

Avoid taking naps during the day.

Eat super healthy.

My internet diagnosis (as a career researcher in the field of medicine):

Your body has entered a state of severe chronic inflammation.

Sleep and inflammation are tightly linked. Even one sleepless night can cause unhealthy levels of inflammation.

And an increased inflammatory state messes with your brain so that it can’t ‘turn off’ properly at night.

So it’s a vicious feedback loop causing your death spiral:

Inflammation —> Insomnia —> Severe Inflammation —> Severe Insomnia

The only way to recover from this death spiral without crash landing is to go all in on reducing inflammation:

1. Cut out all alcohol.

2. Cut out all pro-inflammatory foods containing high level of omega-6 fatty acids.

3. Eat more anti-inflammatory foods, especially those high in omega-3 fatty acids.

4. Eat a lot higher level of fiber (more green vegetables). This will slow rate of absorption of inflammatory foods into your body.

5. Consider taking Ibuprofen multiple times per day for 2-3 weeks until you can get your inflammation down to a more manageable level.

6. Take a break from your stressful life responsibilities until you get your health back on track. Otherwise your health will get worse.

Best wishes for your recovery.

Can this type of inflammation be detected?...
Maybe consider checking into a hospital for a few days wherein the sleep quality can be measured.

Inflammation markers can be detected by lots of different tests. But given his degree of insomnia and the well-established links between sleep and inflammation, he doesn’t need a test to know that the results won’t look good.

He already said his HBA1C has increased, which is one marker for chronic inflammation. He has already cut out sugar, so the high HBA1C is most likely caused by his chronic inflammation.
