He doesn't know if he will regain the #1 ranking? What else needs to happen to him so he will actually know that he is never getting back to #1 again?

Tries too hard to be some sort of philosopher. Talking about how good his life is, as if he is trying to convince himself that he doesn't care that his tennis is awful. In fact he does care, he cares a lot.

This is totally separate to being down to earth and a decent guy, not disputing that. No one thinks tennis is life and death.

yea, at the end of 2013 folks claimed he is a lock on for 18 Slams.. Father Time gets to have his say on these kind of matters first...

I always liked him.. But there is no way he can overcome the Ultron now.. No number 1 for him now. The fight is still between no. 2 - 5.. 1 is reserved solid for now

This thread is funny though. If he says something more confident people criticize him and call him arrogant. Whatever he says the haters will find a way to spin it. The truth is that he is a down to earth guy who is greatful for what he has gotten out of life thus far.

I think so long as he can maintain a top 5 position, he will carry on. But if he drops much lower and especially if he falls out of the top 10 (without any realistic chance of getting back) he will then call it quits. Ditto Roger.

Nobody is denying that though. He will be remembered for that attitude as much as for his titles.

What is everyone worked up about? He's rich, busy, and is still making millions a year. 5th place makes good money. He might as well keep it up until the money faucet runs out, which won't be anytime soon. Weak era? lmfao

İt is over. 6 months later he will say ı am 20 in the world not bad if he really wants to keep on going,which ı think he wont after Olympics.

I can't say I'm really surprised by today's result. Clay simply isn't the confidence builder it once was for Nadal, especially when you look at his results on that surface in the last 3 years. No disrespect to Thiem who's one of the good up and coming players, but a loss in the SF of a 250 event is simply unacceptable for someone of Nadal's resume. Even if Nadal had won the tournament, I don't think it would of changed anyone's opinion about his future given how much he struggled, but a loss is even worst. As much as I was encouraged by his rather stronger than usual results during the indoor swing, I just can't see how he can shake things up to be a factor again. After every defeat, we always hear the same story from the Nadal camp and while I don't have any doubt about his work ethic, if you only work on the same thing that just don't prove efficient anymore, you're doing it wrong. Nadal needs a major change in his approach to the game, otherwise, he will be history. As much as I wish Nadal was still a top guy and able to slug it out with the Djoker, I think the R word is more likely for him if those kind of results keep piling up.

He has a good draw at Rio. He wins that event next week and everyone will start saying you can never count out Rafa as a threat for FO.

The saddest sight in sport is to se an Icon, arguably the best ever in his sport (muhamed ali another example) go on far too long. Nadal is finished which has been obvious since IW 2014. The FO2014 win was a miracle as he was awful then but his aura literally carried him through.

he always had these close matches even during his peak.

Nadal can't beat anyone even on clay, Federer is 35, just had surgery and probably won't come back for another 4 months, Wawrinka hasn't done anything so far and Murray has a 2-22 record against these guys since mid 2013. Guys ranked below 5 are pushovers and the new generations are non-existent.

You really have to be blind to not see that this is a weak era.
