Nadal's more mature now, he pulls out when it's hard. It's much better for him to play when it's soft, he can pace himself better to get the very satisfying results.
Nope. He just can't play on hardcourt anymore as he is about to retire. French Open might be his last chance.

Is Nadal's future clear? No.
Is withdrawing from these two events a good thing, especially for Rafa fans? Hell yes.

I will be bummed to miss him for another month but it is the smart decision. Regardless of his health going forward he should stick to this schedule for the rest of his career..however long that is

There is no logical reason why he should always get injured there though. Unless he just doesn't prepare at the start of the year in the right way.

Not sure if it has to do with the surface or something else but that's just what happens most of the time and with the state of his knees, nothing good can come out of keeping at it at this point.

he skipped a hardcourt grandslam (AO) just because it intervenes and disrupts his lengthy comeback process.......who the fcuk cares about two glorified ******** hardcourt events scheduled in the middle of clay season?

good decision.......he is targeting french open and wimbledon.......

Middle of the clay season? Are there any clay court tournaments being play outside of South and Central America prior to April?

I thought the Masters 1000 were mandatory events?

I believe Federer has an exemption based on age and matches played that allows him to not play without penalty. I'll try to find it and verify that...or perhaps someone else can chime in?

Fed can skip any master he wants because he's played more than 600 matches, has played on the tour for more than 12 years and is 31. (any top 30 player who has those 3 conditions covered is exempt from the mandatory rule altogether). Nadal only has one of the 3 conditions filled (more than 600 matches), so he can skip 1 of the 8 mandatory masters.

What if there was some truth to the silent ban?

But each tournament is at its own discretion as to whether they want to field Nadal? ATM the tournaments located in iberian nations are allowing him to play because he is a fellow countryman or closely ethnically related, while, tournaments located in non-iberian countries with non-iberian tournament directors and owners are not so forgiving, and are not yet opening their doors to allow him to play?

Its a crazy theory yes, super crazy....

What does that have to do with what I said? He's still skipping two Masters 1000, penalty or not.

But he's not losing any points by skipping MC because he didn't play last year. Unlike Nads who is losing 720 points and risking penalty by skipping IW and Miami.

Not surprised at all. Nadal's career is over. He really needs to stop delaying the inevitable and just retire.

WTH is going on?

I am waiting for the day the real story comes out as to why Nadal is skipping all these dang events.

He has practically put himself as a clay court specialist only for the first 1/3 of the year (maybe even longer gotta wait another few months to see what else he pulls out of).

Looks like he'll just play what he wants to. If that is the best decision for him, it's hard to fault it.

Imo, if you can't play on hard courts anymore, you should retire. You are a disgrace to game by only playing on clay.

Nadal is doing the right thing. If you have health issues need to do whatever it takes to prolong your career. I guess the only question is how much will his rankings drop - might make it difficult in in the grand slams in terms of the draws.

I go to the Miami tournament every year and one of highlights is to watch Rafa on the practice courts. Now both Fed and Rafa are not playing Miami. I'm very disappointed.

What's going on is that he has multi million dollar contracts so he has to stay in the circus a lil bit longer and keep his career going, if only on dirt.

Are you serious? Why not ask what 2 + 2 equals?

Nadal has troublesome injuries, and hardcourts make it worse. That's it. For years, many people went on about how Nadal's gamestyle would cause injury problems for Nadal, yet many of those same people now seem mystified by that happening and think there's an ulterior motive. Bizarre logic, unless you conclude that they just want to bash Nadal for the sake of it.

What a wuss! I'm sure this was the plan all along but the timing of this announcement prior to his opening match in Acapulco is just plain bizarre! If you're not going to IW, dump the Mexican event, get on a plane to Mallorca and try your best to be ready for Miami. If it's still a no-go, you've got all that extra time to prep for MC.

No, he's got to play prima donna, make the 500 event a joke and a pain for the Acapulco organizers with all the heightened security, water down the bottom half of the draw and just plain gum up everything. We know what little regard he has for these events by his comments in Sao Paulo. Just take your one trophy, hop on the plane and go play some poker in between fishing junkets. You're done, Ralph!

Lots of good players. No, it won't have the star power of having everybody there, but there should still be plenty of great tennis.

tennis fans might not realize it but there's going to be a day without any of these top players..enjoy it while you can

And it will be a sad day for tennis. With Roddick out, I already lost a bit of interest. I can imagine the ATP tour looking like post Sampras retirement where there's a new winner at each tournament and no one really dominating. As much as I respect Djokovic and Murray, I have little interest in they're tennis style and I won't be paying top dollar to see them in action or watch 5+ hour matches of defending.

Tomas Muster was mostly an exclusive clay courter toward the end of his career. I'm not a fan of Rafa or Muster but I respect the clay court game. Good luck to Nadal on extending his career.

Even if he only play on clay and skip all hard court, he's a part time player. Those million of dollars contracts is suppose to be Nadal playing full time. With Nadal being less exposure on TV, company like Nike loses. I think these coporations have to come into certain terms before the contract was signed.

That good news as well.....he can spend time with his kids and wife. Also his Rotterdam and Dubai + South America fees should cover 3 times the amount he could have won in IW and MIami.

Plus a better prep for Clay Season.....as long as he gets a few matches in Rome and Madrid.

Nadal would need his time to find his clay form.....he is nowhere near winning RG form. IW and Miami would reverse the positive direction he is going towards....plus the knees might react....or maybe it his mind?

He may need his confidence at a high before partaking on HC.....

Can you just stop whining for a change. Nadal is the first person who wants to play all these matches. If sports is your live it's bad enough already if you can't do compete.

Can you name one poster that claimed Nadal's style would end in injury, but is now mystified by it? I mean naming one isn't ask for too much is it, since you claim MANY.

I wonder how world history will look upon this moment in Nadal's career.

Although it's not yet been confirmed, I suspect the rumours will prove true.

Federer and Nadal, the two top players in the game up until a couple of years ago, are both now beginning to wind down their careers by playing restricted schedules for reasons of either age or injury. I doubt we will see either of them ever play a full season again. It is a moment most of us had dreaded and hoped would be delayed for a few more years yet but it is now upon us and we just have to live with that fact. Nothing lasts forever!

I had kind of expected Nadal to pass on playing IW and other big hardcourt tournaments which he's already won but thought he would continue to play Miami (and later Cincinnati) which he's yet to crack. Maybe he still will!

That he is a trouper. Playing a gruelling sport whilst in a lot of pain but determined to go on in front of millions of people who watch his every move

I would agree with this.

If he hadn't just withdrawn from two tournaments.

The answer is no. And it's Nadal's fault that he can't compete. His style of play is stupid.

Who saw this coming? Are you joking?

I would've been shocked if he stepped onto a hard court before Roland Garros.

makes perfect sense play the stuff you are good at and skip the stuff you are bad at. so nadal will stay with the clay no?

Is it bad that I am showing my hatred against a player?? and before you guys even say anything.. I want to say it is not because nadal schooled Federer.. because many other people have spanked federer and I dont have such hatred against anyone..

Nadal's excuses, fraudulent antics and every single thing about him makes me repel him..

I think that it is fair that I hate him..
I proudly hate him too. Damn cheater:evil:

Champagne - Moët@Chandon is in the fridge waiting for the day nadal announces his retiring from tennis, may it be sooner. Amen.

Wise move from Rafa to preserve the all-so-important H2H against his main rivals, while racking up title count by beating nobodies in 250s and 500s, will win RG.

Actually I'm glad about this, doesn't this basically mean he can't get back to #4? Seeing that he's dropping 720 points from IW + Miami.

Meh. If you're going to go on a hate-fuelled champagne fest, at least do it with a decent champagne.

He's worth at least a bottle of Krug, mibbes even Cristal.

Would you really like your favorite player to quit? If I had to choose between my favorite player getting gradually worse (which happens to everyone eventually) and having to skip events, or my favorite player quitting altogether I'd pick the former without a doubt. I'd make the same decision with any player, by the way, doesn't even have to be one I like.
