Nadal will never win the US Open

The US Open has become the fastest surface in tennis which robs Nadal of the necessary time he needs to perform his magical game. He has lost to players who can hit through the court with power. He has lost to El Anyaoui (big serve, big forehand), Roddick (big serve, big forehand), Blake (big serve, big forehand), Youhzny (big backhand down the line), Ferrer, Murray (big backhand down the line). Keifer in the 2nd set is blasting the ball through him. The fast court comes too fast to his forehand.

I think Nadal COULD win the US Open. It wouldn't surprise me if he did. But I have a feeling it won't ever happen. Murray, Djokovic, and Del Potro will be around every year of Nadal's career to take the US Open instead of him. And Federer and Roddick will still be huge threats this year and for a couple years after this. Of course there will also be other up and coming players who get good that I can't predict.

THe point is that the competition is probably too much, with all the players I named above being better on fast hard courts than Nadal. Unfortunately for Nadal, this is a very strong era on hard courts.

One match I would find really interesting is del Potro v Nadal. I think del Potro would actually destroy him at the US Open.

Agreed. I think that Del Potro will generally own Nadal on hard courts from now on. Nadal is still better on clay (though Del Potro beating Nadal on clay in the coming years wouldnt surprise me) and Del Potro is not very good on grass yet, so I can't say the same for the other surfaces. BUT, I think Del Potro matches up great with Nadal.

-Tall so the topspin doesnt hurt him that much
-Serves big
-Big groundstrokes

That is a pretty good recipe to defeat Nadal. And Nadal is worst on hard courts, while DP is best, so I see him being a very tough opponent for Nadal on hard courts in the coming years.

And certainly, if Del Potro and Nadal made the semis this year, I would predict Del Potro winning.

Nadal was asleep after 20 minute 6-0 first set against Kiefer. Kudos to Kiefer for "blasting the ball" through a man who was napping.

I'd also predict a del Potro win if they met in semis. Nadal really hates it when people can hit big, the thing with big hitters is that they can be a bit inconsistent which gives Nadal a bit of breathing room.

JMDP never seems to miss though, he just constantly pummels the ball side to side. Murray seems to be able to soak it up and deal with it but I think Nadal would struggle alot against it on the faster surfaces.

Federer grew up playing on clay courts. Nadal didn't grow up playing on fast hardcourts.

Its almost surprising that Federer struggles to take games off Nadal on clay courts. Nadal sure has no trouble dismissing Federer on hardcourts. First time they met and last time they met and plenty of times in between.

He especially had trouble taking games in that straight sets thumping in Madrid.

Nadal suffered sudden and traumatic knee injuries in the epic semi against Novak. He has not really played on the tour since then. Showed up for the "final" next day so that sensitive schoolgirl Federer can feel like she "won against Nadal on clay". So much for that.

Of course even crippled Nadal can thump overrated retired journeymen like Hewitt. Don't let that win at FO fool you into believeing that Nadal could even walk at the FO this year.

Federer has beaten Nadal plenty of times on hard courts. The first time they met on hardcourts, Federer had the flu, and the last time they met on hardcourts, Federer had a back injury. When Federer was fine, he pummeled Nadal on the hardcourts in Shanghai two years in a row both in straight sets.

And Federer would have pummeled Nadal plenty of more times on hardcourts if only Nadal was good enough on hardcourts to make it through to the finals to meet Federer.

Yeah, Del Potro is remarkably consistent for someone who hits as hard as he does.

Ah thanks for clearing that one up here I was thinking Federer played a great match but that makes much more sense.

Also correct, Nadal was so confident that he could thump an overrated journeyman that when he saw him as his second round draw at Wimbledon he withdrew

Wrong. Nadal stated in a press conference after his 1st round match against Gasquet this Wednesday that his knee injury dates back to Monte Carlo in April. It had nothing at all to do with his semi in Madrid against Djokovic. And it certainly didn't stop him from winning Monte Carlo, Barcelona, nor Rome. Thus, he was no more injured in Madrid nor Roland Garros than he was in the previous three tournaments that he won, thus, it was no excuse at all for his losses.

This is so hilarious BP. Anytime Nadal fans give a "reason" as to why Nadal lost (many of which are just flat out true) you would rail on them. Yet you are ALWAYS the first to bust out the ridiculous excuses for Federer. You're saying Federer lost at the AO because of a back injury? Did you see what he did to Roddick and Del Potro?

He was playing as well as he could and he still lost. Nadal was nowhere near 100% in that final either. So...

Also what about when Nadal beat Federer in Dubai on hard courts? Excellent match. Just give it a rest man...

He's also stated he had bad pain in Miami. And his movement was never back to his 2008 level after he left at the end of the season. He obviously didn't play his best at the AO this year, and yet he still managed to win. Scary eh? ;-)

Did you see how horribly Federer served in the final? It was obvious that his back was in pain. Playing his 7th best of five set match in two weeks didn't do his injured back any favors and his back hit its limit.

Federer owns Roddick and Del Potro.

So why all the excuses for Madrid and Roland Garros?

Nadal needs the strong hc players to get injured or catch something like a cold, before the us open starts.

It depends how much tennis he has played. We all know right now Del Potro's fitness and endruance is just terrible.

Correct, if he is to get past Murray then you'd think he would of had to of given an awful lot in that match. Playing Nadal a few days later might be a struggle for him but if he can find a way to keep the energy levels up he'll be ok.

just like federer can never win the FO right?

You would think by now that people would know nothing is set in stone. Yes this is rafa's worst surface, but anything can happen. He could very well win it this year, although I hope not. No offense rafa fans. :)

After all the hype it could well be someone like Tsonga or Roddick ................or Soderling

USO is not Rebound Ace. USO is DecoTurf II. You must be thinking of the old Aus Open surface.

I think Federer's forehand really shines on this surface. Seems like his shots shoot forward after bouncing with the court barely slowing it down.
His backhand does the same if he cranks it up.

Rafa has a shot but because of the depth of the field, the more time passes, the more difficult it will be for him to win the USO.

It's amazing how many excuses you can come up with for Nadal for every loss he's had.

This game of digging up the never predictions is too easy but that FEDR would not win another after 2008 and Rafa win 4x. Who would have taken that bet ?
