Novak Djokovic doubtful about Paris

Novak Djokovic's dream season could be at risk of ending on a low note after the world No 1 lost only his fourth match of 2011 when he went down 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 on Saturday to Japan's Kei Nishikori in the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors.

Djokovic said he had been playing all week with a sore shoulder similar to the injury which forced him to quit the Cincinnati final in August against Andy Murray before the US Open.

"I could barely serve for much of the match, I was in pain," said the Serb, who has won ten titles in 2011 but only returned this week after six weeks out with a back injury.

"My shoulder is very bad, we won't even talk about the third set. I have a lot of pain in my body from the competition this week. I hope I can be ready for Paris."

That Masters event starts on Monday, with Djokovic now in serious doubt of fronting up. He said he is likely to travel to the city and hope for the best.

"I don't think I'll be able to train for the next few days."

Djokovic said that his gruelling first-round win over Xavier Malisse on Tuesday could have set the tone for the rest of the week.

"It was a shock to the body," he said of the opening struggle. "Competition is different to practise

"I may have forced things too much I was feeling afraid of the shoulder and what might happen to it. My rhythm on my serve has been completely off."

Nishikori, ranked 32nd and a semifinalist last month at the Shanghai Masters, will play one of two Swiss, four-time champion Roger Federer or Stanislas Wawrinka, for his second career title after winning at Delray Beach in 2008.

Nishikori has never played either Federer or Wawrinka.

Djokovic received treatment twice during the match on his shoulder and was barely present in the third set, which Nishikori swept through.

Nishikori, 21, has moved from outside the Top 50 since after the US Open, exploding into form in the autumn in Asia and Europe.

The Djokovic match was his third semifinal in four tournaments and he now has beaten four Top 10 players in his career.

Djokovic got off to a flying start with a break for 3-1 and a 5-1 lead. But with the Serb serving for the set, Nishikori managed a great escape with a break, with Djokovic promptly calling for the trainer to massage his right shoulder.

The top seed scratched through to take the set 6-4, concluding on a break after barely half an hour.

Djokovic had trouble consolidating in the second set, going down a break in the fifth game as his Japanese opponent began to find his range.

The Serb moved into position with a 5-4 lead and love-30 on Nishikori's serve but could not strike a blow. Instead, the challenger held for 5-all and eventually squared the match at a set each after a tiebreaker.

Nishikori won the 71-minute marathon with seven unforced errors while Djokovic's errors mounted to a massive 18 in the set.

It was all Nishikori in the third set.

"I played well from the second set," said the Japanese winner, "I got my rhythm and hit some unbelievable shots.

"After Shanghai (where he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga) I've felt different with my game. I'm playing differently, more solid from the baseline and not making any stupid errors."

He's had a great year, with multiple slams and a mountain of ranking points.

From a neutral perspective, I want to see him in Paris/London because he's the no1 player - but he needs to be sensible about these remaining tournaments and plan ahead to the defence of his Aus Open crown.

Last thing he wants is to make his injury worse over the next month and for it to still be niggling in January. Hopefully if he skips Paris he'll be alright for London.

I'm not surprised, I saw his match with bagdatis as well as the middle of the tie breaker today until the final loss. It was obvious Novak was done at 0-3 down, but today, he chose to suck it up and finish it out.

I only saw flashes of good shots, along with bad serving, rusty play, where he missed the lines a lot as well as hitting a lot of forehands into the net.

Novak didn't look ready for prime time, by a long shot. It did seem hard to see him playing 2 more weeks back to back in a Master's as well as WTF. I wonder if he'll play WTF. He's not ready by a long shot. He'll get creamed based on his current form.

He's clearly not ready for play.

Well, makes his job easier if that's what you mean, now he just has Murray to deal with :/

It all depends on how well Murray is, Murray could really be injured, and if he is, it's not a simple injury. Time will tell. Fed's looking like he's rested. I'm giving WTF to Fed if Murray is injured, and a toss up between Fed and Murray if Murray isn't injured.

Lol. Why is it perfectly ok for this guy to make excuse after excuse for his losses, and claim injury after injury as well, but if Nadal does it he gets treated like sh*t and is called a liar? Not mention the retirements from his matches when he's losing. It also seems as if it's just fine and dandy if he misses tournaments to rest and heal, but Nadal isn't allowed the same privledge or else he is once again called a liar and treated like sh*t. This place is so biased it's not even funny, and has so many double standards when it comes to Nadal that it's hilarious.

I wonder why that is. Maybe it is because Nadal is not a likable guy? I'm surprised he has so many fans tbh. But I guess anyone that has a lot of success will have a lot of fans. Even if they are Ivan Drago. lol

If injured, why play?

I think he should skip Paris and not risk anything as he clearly doesn't need to win it for any reason (ranking points etc...) + He needs to learn to feel his body when to play and when not like Federer does so well.

I don't really know, I guess people are just more convinced about the legitimacy of Novak's injury, I mean he did take an MTO after winning the first set. Or it could be double standards as you say, a lot of people feel Nadal isn't as genuine as he seems. It's open to debate...

Erm you've been calling Djokovic a liar all season, he wasn't injured in Cinci he just pulled out to save face, yet here he gets beaten 6-0 in the final set and is also supposedly not injured either, he pulls out while only a set and early break down against delpo but is not injured. Misses a masters and Chino Open that you say he is 100% certaain to win... but he's not injured. He plays a 500 and loses but he's still not injured. What does he actually have to do to look injured in your eyes? I mean short of appearing on court with one leg missing?

The comparisons with Nadal are pointless. Novak has retired a lot but he did this as a minor winner, it wasn't a case of people saying "he only lost because he was injured" it was "this guy will never win because he is a wimp"

Nadal gets bad press because his army of fans state he would win every match if he asn't injured. It is only THIS year that Djokovic is the guy to beat if fit. So basically he has to notch up another 2-4 years of winning several titles and appearing injured in every match he loses to match Nadal on this one.

All the previous years no-one was saying "Novak only lost that match cos he was injured" What you have had to put up with a mere THREE times, people have been putting up with with regards to Nadal for about 4 years.

Anyway, Novak should just pull out. It's not going to get better in a couple of days. If it was just rustiness then he should play, but not if he's injured, and 6-0 does suggest it is a physical problem - I mean even I thought Nadal must be in trouble when he lost a 6-0 set to Murray.

Why? He is a proven faker and gamesman. He retires matches constantly, and is one the biggest quitters on the tour, quitting matches for silly reasons such as being too hot or having a sore throat. His injuries should be viewed with the same suspicion people cast upon Nadal for his injuries if not more.

Nadal used to be let off the hook all the time. But when he started turning into a coward by calling MTOs in tournaments (particularly Wimbledon) and making a mockery of time-outs only to come back out on the court like nothing was wrong, that's when people became convinced he was full of sh*t, not to mention the coaching he received regularly from his Uncle along with the massive time wasting between serves.
Djokovic and Nadal really are cut from the same cloth. Both are all about gamesmanship.

I think it just goes to show that people have faves and get too worked up, and start thinking someone won't lose. It's the fans that give stuff a bad rap, rarely the players themselves. And it's fascinating how fans debate retirements. Nadal has consistently played harder his entire career, with the exception of this year. Novak has had more retirements than Nadal, who's been on the tour for longer. It was decent of Novak to not retire today, I watched a good portion of the match, and Kei looked more hurt during the 3rd set after he took his MTO to get his foot taped up. He looked like he had leg issues.

Nadal gets illegal coaching from his Uncle AND he takes time outs and bogus MTOs. Nadal bends the rules. Why the hell would anybody respect him for that? Everybody on this board has seen it. Look at Wimbledon 2010 against Petschener. Look at Hamburg 08 against Federer. Completely BOGUS time outs. He's as bogus as Djokovic.

Ye, no surprise you disagree. Nadal gets coaching from his Uncle. Even in his book he admits he has no self confidence and relies heavily on family support. The guy is still a kid and does what his Uncle tells him to do. And he's a cheater just like Djokovic. Even Federer has cheated, taking a bogus bathroom break when getting spanked by Davydenko at the AO 2010, trying to disrupt his rhythm and waiting for night fall. Federer even admitted it was a tactic he used.

Nadal gets bad press from this forum because this is mainly populated by Fed fans, and many Fed fans hate Nadal because he stole a lot of glory from him. If he did not exist, Fed would have had 1, 2 or 3 CYGS by now, etc. That's all there is to it.

It's true it's more the fans themselves. And I used to get really annoyed with Novak always pulling out of matches or taking MTO, I still don't like it now. But he just used to give up the match and then people would say he was a wimp etc. No-one ever said "Well he only lost because he was injured" until this year, and I felt bad for Murray (not even liking Murray) that people don't sort of count this as a win over Djokovic - ok he was injured but we don't know what would have happened if he wasn't, Murray is still going to be able to beat him so give him credit, Novak could still play the first set.

Now with Nadal, from about 2007/2008 a lot of losses have been put down to injury/tiredness. Unlike with Djokovic people don't say "Wimp!" they say "poor injured rafa, he would have won otherwise" THAT'S the difference. Djokovic always got humiliated for his retirements/physical problmes, Nadal got made a hero.

Now if Djokovic keeps this up for another few years he will be where Nadal is now - a guy who has excuses made for him for whatever loss he suffers. But that has only begun this year. That's what I was saying to Clarky (though I'm not sure if he/she has blocked me for repeatedly talking sense and refuting their arguments)

Fed was back in his chair from the bathroom break before the umpire called time. Please explain how is it cheating and how was Davydenko's rhythm disrupted because Fed was in the bathroom instead of his chair during the stipulated time between sets. How come you don't list every bathroom break taken by Fed and every other player (between sets) as cheating ? Just because Fed joked about this one in his on court interview?

No doubt, but I still think Federer can get back to the top before he calls it quits. Next year could be a big year for him.

No way. Federer will never be #1 again. He can't win anything when Nadal and Djokovic are in form. He has to go through both of them to win and that's impossible at the Slams. Federer can't solve Djokovic at the AO. He has no prayer against Nadal at Roland Garros. And now he's having all sorts of trouble against big hitters like Berdych and Tsonga at Wimbledon, let alone having to go through Nadal and Djokovic there.

i agree it seems impossible but if somebody could do it, it would be federer. in 2010, if somebody said next year djokovic would win 3 grand slam titles and reach number 1, most people probably wouldn't believe it either. we'll just have to see what happens next year.

I really wonder how many of you have played tennis at all. Why should any player have to justify taking a toilet break? Can any of you imagine what it is like playing in front of millions of people in cool conditions with your nerves on edge.

At the end of the day no on line coaching is going to make a difference as the player still has to deliver and the best will always survive no matter what the distraction caused by players going for a break or having treatment etc. That is why the top players are NOT kids they are real men who fight alone and have to face all sorts of critics if things don't go right but they always come back to fight and win another great match.

Nole is playing the waiting game is getting ridiculous. He should announce whether if he's playing or not a long time ago so the director can replace him with another player. Rather than waiting til the last minute decision which complicates the issue. The tournament has already started. Have some respect Nole.

Well, he's in the draw so as far as the officials are concerned he's playing unless he suddenly announces his withdrawal!

Unless Novak is 100%, which seems pretty unlikely after just a couple of days rest and no practice, it would be a very stupid move to play Paris when London is just around the corner and risk aggravating the shoulder even more, hopefully for the WTF's sake he'll pull out to make sure he's 100% for that.

I didn't see any updates on this in the news, whether Djoker's playing Paris/Bercy or not? Isn't there some kind of deadline before which to decide and give the tournament organizers a chance to fill the draw? If the injury was bad -think he said 'bad pain in the shoulder' - and it was so bad he got bageled against Kei Nishikori, then it should be an easy decision to withdraw, no? These Djoker injuries are always surrounded in mystery :)
It would be nice to know if they will switch to have Fed & Murray on opposite sides of the draw for a possible final.
