As an update to this anecdote. In today's TR update, my rating randomly bumped up approx. .08 and all my teammates/friends either stayed the same, went down a touch or went up a touch (.01-.02). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Some of the recent self-rate matches that were omitted are now calculated again. Same ol' same ol'...

Hi! Brand new poster.

How sure is everyone that October 30th is the cutoff?

Also, would anybody mind looking at my body of work and determining whether or not I will be bumped up to a 3.5?

Welcome!

I am reasonably sure as I've been told 10/30 by two people I trust. However, many other coordinators continue to tell folks 11/13, but I think they are confusing when matches must be entered by versus the cut-off date for matches to count. I wrote about it on my blog.

If you are interested, I generate reports using the ratings I calculate that are reasonably accurate in predicting year-end levels. DM me here or find my blog and I can give you more information.

I read online that 2022 year-end ratings will be released on December 2nd. Is that accurate?
I received an e-mail saying "around December 1st" which is all per the normal procedure. That is generally when ratings are released every year, it is always the week after Thanksgiving and usually early in that week right around 12/1 but the exact day varies a bit either way each year. My guess would be they will be published at midnight on 12/1, but we'll have to wait and see and there may not be a firm date but it depends on them wrapping up any final reviews and technical details of doing the publishing.

what makes the site bogus? TR seems to be pretty accurate at predicting who would win within a level.
I suspect it's accuracy is useful on a relative basis if all players in the comparison have a large number of computed matches (samples). Be cautious of very few-match players since their ratings are highly speculative.

I am at least .5 underrated on TR and it’s even worse on TLS. This is based on my UTR and the matches I’ve been winning. I’ve been playing up a level all year with success (around 70% matches won) and have been the better player more than once during doubles matches. Unfortunately for me, TR and TLS weight the win more towards the higher rated player usually.

@schmke or anyone else

Does anyone know if Tri-level counted for a rating in Southern last year?

We have a guy on our team that played 6 tri-level matches but he's still an S rate in 2023.

@Creighton Tri Level doesn't count towards your dynamic rating - However, if you advance to Nationals all players must have a "C" computer rating - which means he will have to had played in some adult league this year ( at least 3 matches) to get a dynamic rating.

Correct for Southern, most other sections do include Tri-Level in year-end ratings.

Not sure the latter is true, I don't believe I've seen that in practice. What led you to believe that is the case?

I'm guessing the USTA just makes little effort to calculate full M ratings like they do for C ratings. For the 9.0 team you mention:
  • One player played 3 matches, 1 against another self-rate that only played 2 matches. I've seen this occur in Adult league and the player that played 3 matches gets a year-end rating, but it appears in this case the player didn't get an M rating.
  • Another played 4 matches, but 2 were against other self-rates that only played 2 matches.
  • Another just like the 1st above
  • Another played 10 matches including 5 at Nationals and didn't get a rating. Not sure how to explain it, doesn't seem to be an edge case.
  • Another played 11 matches including 5 at Nationals and didn't get a rating. Not sure how to explain it either.
Something strange is going on, I'll have to look into it more.

Hey @schmke I know this is an old post, but wondered if you ever had a chance to look into this and what you make of it now?

One possibility: If the players in question had already signed up for a non-mixed league in the new year, then their mixed rating would be replaced with a new self-rating.

In Mixed, sure. No strikes or DQs from Mixed.
There was one self rated player in my section who only played mixed. He was extremely out of level but nothing happened until a team filed a grievance and he got DQed up a level. His self rate form was accurate, so I think it was based on his mixed dynamic rating?

A grievance can be upheld by the committee for any reason. I've heard of a committee simply reviewing one's record and decided they were winning to much and promoted them. I've also heard of these being challenged and overturned.

Do people who play at mixed nationals lose the ability to auto appeal their rating or is that only people who played at single gender nationals?

I don’t believe there’s any rule on the books relating to nationals players being ineligible for appeal. Just by nature of the fact that they’re likely in the upper end of their rating band to be at nationals in the first place, it’s highly unlikely any of them would ever be successful.

This would be incorrect on several levels. One there is a rule. Two, many players that go to Nationals get bumped up and are certainly not in the upper end of their rating band anymore.

Yup:

"A championship player’s computer rating achieved as a result of play in National Championships
may not be appealed down after the Championship Year it is received except as in Reg. 2.05D
Medical Appeals and Reg. 2.05E Age Related Appeals of Players 60 or Over"

Thanks for quoting the rule. The medical/age exception got me, as I know several 60+ players who routinely go to nationals and then appeal down every couple years.
