Oh dear, Raonic is back

Was enjoying a nice break from his dull serve-botting ways and equally robotic press conferences (play the drinking game for every time he uses the word 'efficient' - you won't last very long).

But I guess this emphasizes just what a crutch a good serve can be - you can spend months out of the game and gain 10kg of fat, yet just serve your way to a decent come-back.

Hold for 6 games, and try to slap a few return winners on a tie-break - life on easy mode. The best advice I could give to a young tennis hopeful is to grow to 6ft 6in or taller.

I expected Raonic to rise back up if he avoided more big injuries. As long as he can serve big he just needs to up his fitness and he can servebot his way through matches. In comparison Nishikori is going to have a harder time rising back up the rankings when he's gotta grind his way through every match.

My thread foreseeing a potential Raonic Wimbledon win isn't so ridiculous, even though it got flying pig memes :D

Just good to see he's healthy. It's been his main problem really. He doesn't have a flashy game or personality, but it's getting the job done so far @ IW. He's a threat at a major which is more than anyone can say about most of the players right now.

I hate his tennis with a passion. So dull.

Disgraceful!

You are officially NOT invited to the MILOS Wimbledon winning party.

So what? Atleast he brings something different to the table compared to yet another topspin baseliner with zero transition game.

And you don't get to #3 in the world or reach a Wimbledon final with just a serve.
That Wimbledon final happened due to luck as of happens with Milos and his draws. Querrey taking out Novak and Kneerer. But on the other hand he might have made the AO 2016 final if not for injury in the SF and worse players (Washington) have made a Wimbledon final before.

Btw, who is Kneerer?

In fact, Milos that year was well capable of taking out other non-big 4 players, especially those with similar styles.

Washington, well, but Milos also reached SF and QF. He could have replicated his 2016 run in 2017 if he and Cilic swapped draws, since Mueller had been exhausted, Murray was injured, and Querrey, well, no chance.

Good for him but personally I wouldn’t bother watching a final twixt two players like him eg a combo of any of Querrey, Isner, Raonic, Anderson; barely watchable seeing them unstitched by Fedr.

The guy who straight setted him last year.

Good lord I can't believe I'm saying this, but it might actually be good to have someone else who sorta knows how to play tennis at a decent level out there, to bring the count up to 2.5. It's awful, when will it end?

No, not him. Never. With him it's even more awful

Raonic was the worst player to make a Wimbledon final in 20 years.

At least with him back maybe we can all congregate around making fun of him instead of calling the next Davydenko the next Djokovic and the next Robredo the next Kuerten.

What do you mean? Chung will be even better than Djokovic and let's not talk about Thiem. He'll win the next five French Opens!

On a serious note, we can make fun of him, yes. But he evokes a sort of anger in me I didn't think t I could feel towards a tennis player.

didn't Goffin have him dead to rights in that tournament. Still can't believe Federer donated that match. At least he gave him the business last year. Still, it would have been nice to say that the new and improved Roddick's results against a 33-36 year old Federer at Wimby were getting schooled when Federer was in form and losing in 4 when he wasn't.

You must have also hated Ivanisevic and Krajicek.

I hate Zverev game more. Although he moves better, he was a little better than a backhand-oriented version of Milos, but with no net game. (I mean his backhand, his stronger shot, is the equivalent of Milos fh).

No. Other servebots have personality. He drops boredom.

Raonic reminds me of that era where guys like Greg Rusedski and Mark Philippoussis were considered credible tennis players. No thanks.

Seriously though, I watched most of the match vs Querrey yesterday, and his breaks of serve were pretty impressive. Of course he got some help, but some of the shots he hit to break serve were very nice.

And of course you can pick on his BH side, but you have to be careful going to his FH one too many times and that's the shot that's underappreciated where he's concerned. His FH is better than any other "servebot." I'd also say he moves better than any other super tall guys simply because he's 4-5 inches shorter.

Your wife must really be ‘bringing it’ to put you in the mood to heap that much praise on Milos. Querrey handed him that match.

And the petulant barking at his box got real boring fast.

I do credit Milos with trying to get to net. Of course that’s what people with no BH should do. He almost crippled himself trying to learn to hit a BH, blamed the ATP for their ‘long schedule’.

Yeah, Querrey lost concentration serving for the first. It's not like that's new for Querrey though. Raonic is better than Querrey all things considered anyway. He has a better career high ranking and a Wimbledon final on top of it. The result wasn't that surprising. Or surprising at all really.

I called Raonic a big lumbering oaf a couple weeks and he's still a big lumbering oaf, but he's a better big lumbering oaf than Querrey.
