Question: Does Federer have more stamina or his opponents choke?

Does Fed have more stamina or his opponents choke?

I admit the guy is fighting hard, but its the same story again and again. AO, Berdych was outplaying him and leadin 2-0, lost 3 sets easily. FO, Acasuso is blowing Federer off the court, leading 5-1 third set, then federer comes back and wins 2 sets easily. Haas leading again 2-0, holding a break point 4-4 in the third set, misses it and then Federer wins 2 easy sets. Del potro, same story....

The question is: People usually say that Nadal wins because he has more stamina, but federer is the one who is showing he´s way superior physically than the others. Or have his opponents just choked big time? Will soderling (who is playing better than federer) choke as well?

PD: Soderling was leading 2-1 against Nadal, all the crowd was behind him and against Nadal. Nadal lost 3-1

DP leading 2-1 and outplaying federer. The crowd rooting for federer and federer came back and won. Maybe the crowd has something to do with the outcome of this tourney, and thats a fact!

Do you seriously believe DP choked? Did you see the match at all? He pulled amazing shots from the very beginning to the very end. His 1st serve percentage clearly diminished, but it was too high for his standards during the whole match in the first place.

Opponents choked. I remember seeing most of those guys serve percentage drop. It is a choke.

Haas didn't miss that break point chance. Federer painted the line with a cross-court forehand.

Federer so-called "seized the day" there. Stop taking away credit where credit is due.

Are you ok? How can you contradict yourself by saying "maybe" the french crowd had something to do with it but then say it's a "fact"???

Am I missing something?

i was gonna say. that shot was totally clutch.

del potro continued to pull out ridiculous shots in the last set and a half when he was in a position to do so. fed took his legs out, but the guy still hit the ball great when he got the opportunity.

to do down the match that just happened is to do down the entire sport as far as i'm concerned. the quality was incredible.

dude chill the OP has a legit question

i believe its a mix of both...hes been playing for about 10 years on the tour and the moment for all of these players is huge.

so in a way its both

so you honestly believe every time Fed wins a 5 setter it's a choke right?

It's mostly due to luck,Fed is the luckiest man in the human existence.

Please join the ATP so that there are less chokers in the top 50. The best tennis players in the world on the atp world tour are such jokes aren't they? They're clowns.

I think there are 2 main reasons why Fed won the match:

1) Federer returns became more aggressive in the 4th set. He didn't just float it away, he tried to hit his topspin backhand and dictate the point from the start.

2) Federer's fitness is just a level above everyone else's. He looked so fresh in the 5th, and Del Potro looked like he couldn't damage Federer like he did in the 1st 3 sets.

It was a great match, and I think I'll enjoy it much more when I rewatch it. Del Potro did not choke. Stop using this word so lightly. He served out of his mind, he was aggressive and rarely missed. He gave it his all yet came up just short. The crowd has nothing to do with it. Del Potro was very focused today, he didn't care about the crowd nor did he care that he's a Federer fan himself.

i see One can´t state a reasoning when it comes to you. I reckon Federer as one the greatest players ever. I just said in all of those matches he didn´t play better than his opponents for good part of the match. He beat them when they dropped their performances (serve percentage, etc ) thats not taking credit from federer, its just saying he´s not god as you believe. Good for him that he can be outplayed and still use another weapons to win ;)

Why are these options mutually exclusive? I thought one player being fit and mentally strong allows them to hang on thereby increasing the pressure on the opponent whereby they - LOSE?

If it were not for the pseudo-psychology on this boards, a simple explanation would be- the better player won today.

Can it be any more simpler than that?

You are absolutely right.

Fatigue is part of sport. So is mental stamina... keeping focus. Why on Earth do the Fed haters not get that? To win you have to outlast your opponent. Simple.

same reason to make more federer threads
since federer started roland garros
could somebody count the federer threads?
how many new federer threads just in this forum?
not to mention the new federer in pro discussion.
federer question
after federer question
what does federer eat for breakfast?
how is federer's strength?
how is federer's coaching?
can federer do X?
can federer do Y?
can federer do Z?

You should go outside and play. Don't get stressed about these things ok? you're not going to get back this time in your life. That's just how internet boards are.

I don't know about the crowd but...
I think that winning still when you're not playing your best tennis is what defines the greatest players. Like today. Fed wasn't playing his best tennis and yet he was able to hang in there and finally when he started to have his strokes at decent level he managed to get a win. Delpo was playing an outstanding game for the first three sets. It's just that usually one can't keep his level at the absolute max for three hours. It's physically and mentally extreamly hard. Everyone who has played tennis knows that. In a best of five match you just can't keep that level the whole time. That is where the routine level comes into picture. And today Delpos routine level wasn't enough to beat fed. Maybe next year 'cause this guy has a lot of potential of winning several big tournaments in the next 5-7 years.
