2021 is going to be an exciting year because normality is getting closer, although it is being very hard because of the virus. I really can’t wait any longer to play matches,” Federer mentioned.

The Swiss star spoke about how his game changed had over the past two decades.
He said, “I’m a more balanced player. Over time I have been able to adjust the details in my style of play, my footwork and the technology of my rackets that make me able to play better now than when I was 20 years old.”

He’s just saying that he’s now more mature as a player, which considering his age is not something unusual or shocking. Me too at 52 years old am much more mature as a player than when I was 20. The problem is that I don’t have the legs of a 20 years old. If I did I would be invincible :D

If only we could actually see the guy playing now lol... It's been forever.

Played 2 grueling matches in 2021 for the Doha Oil Sheiks and promptly exited after collecting his millions just for showing up there.
When is his next appearance? Does he need more rest?

I’m reading ‘play better‘ as in ‘more experienced’ - doing a better job with controllable aspects of his game - technical, strategic and mental

It should be obvious that some elements of any tennis player’s, in fact any human being’s, athletic abilities will decline in their 30s and more rapidly in their 40s.

Foot speed, speed of shot etc are some things readily noticeable from old videos.

That’s my take but then some here will say that is Fedfan rationalization to which all I can do is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

He probably meant 2019 and early 2020 when he was moving well, forget about 2021 with the injury. W19 when he almost beat Djokodal b2b which would've been his greatest accomplishment proves this. Fed knows himself the best. ;)

Watch your mouth. Those are big benefactors of Trump and Kushner. Show some respect!

On topic, what he is saying makes sense. At his age, I feel the same way. My physical capabilities are diminished to be sure, but my tennis IQ is so much higher and my strokes are so much more polished and consistent than they were 20 years ago, even ten years ago, that it makes up for it.

And now my anticipation is better so my court coverage is functionally better. Where I really feel the age is jumping for overheads. No more scissor kick.

Look at the certainty and confidence in the outcome of a hypothetical scenario:)
I don't particulary like hypotheticals, but here I am going by the logic. If tennis would be about hitting sitters it would be another thing, but in this case... :D More experience, improved shots and/or technique are obviously not enough when your body is letting you down.

If by logic you mean bias, sure.

Your glee in the supposed outcome gives it away. ;)

Logically one can’t even predict the outcome of an upcoming match between ATGs with 100% certainty, so forget far-fetched fairy tale hypotheticals.

There is no bias and I am not talking about something certain here, but how I can favor a nearly 40 year old player over a 29 year old player of Pete's calibre ?
When it comes to certainities, only death and taxes.
You can call me biased if you see me pick Fed in a hypothetical scenario and that's not what I am doing here.

Comedy stuff.

When Federer was 20, he was ignoring sincere improvement advice from his superiors (Peter and Hingis), skipping practices, regressing to old tendencies, and crying after his matches because he just 'didn't understand why' he couldn't win anything when he'd had such an easy time in the unpaid juniors. As soon as you involve some money and playing to live, the boys are weeded out from the men. It took a lot of soul searching for Federer to progress to a decently respectable game, and that didn't happen at age 20. The Federer now is better than the Federer back then, yes.

Maybe he simply adapted his game to the new style, while Rafa and Djoker had 6 year head starts.
Thus means Fed was greatest in his era and then completely changed his game to be second or third in another era.

Man he is good.

Anyone who a shred of tennis insight and knowledge knows Federer has played his best tennis since 2014/2015.
No, its 2021 where he is playing best tennis 8-B This is for you and other Nole fans who claim Fed was playing better at 34 years old than at 24 going by an article like this in 2015. Well Novak is 34 now. No excuses now. He should be playing as well as Fed 2015. So his loss to Evans was because Evans was playing well and not Novak playing bad. Evans is becoming the ATG of clay courters C'mon C'mon C'mon C'mon C'mon

These threads only remind me that people here don't watch matches.

A day or two ago @MichaelNadal posted a 2013 Nadal video and I was baffled to see his movement and FH. Don't think he explodes into his shots like he used to then.

Two three months ago I watched 2015 and 2007 WB F side by side, I think I made a thread here about it as well. 2015 Federer was a level below 2007.

From Federer perspective, it's about both marketing and Self motivation. If a athelete keeps saying he played better before and not now, how would he believe he can won again?
