RPM Copy

Hi everyone. I'm a 5.0 player looking for the best low-priced alternative string to RPM. I like textured poly's and have no wrist or arm problems but would be fine with most strings as long as they aren't super stiff. So far, I have been told to try to Black Mamba Gear Twisted, Discho RPM power and Genesis Black Magic. Is there anyone who has tried any black mamba/discho string before that can offer their advice?
Thanks in advance!
Matteo

It's written Strategem in Austrian. ;)

STW, do you have any special instructions for Strategem 8? Bought a reel but I am afraid to string it for fear a TE.

Damn it dumb typo!

String it low. I know you like strings at high tension, but Stratagem 8 ain't a joyride for your arm at high tensions. I personally wouldn't go over 21kg. It offers great power, control and spin in that tension range though.

Volkl Cyclone

Is Volk Cyclone similar to RPM? I know it's a LOT cheaper but posters say it doesn't hold it's tension well.

I was looking for RPM like strings due to durability (save money on stringing jobs). However, I have now purchased a stringing machine so cost to re-string my racquet is no longer an issue. This puts me back on the market for the best suitable strings for me.

I'm currently trying the Volk Cyclone 18g and 17g. It does feel like it loses it's bite faster than an RPM. I still need to do more testing to stick to that notion. I have the 16g and other brands to try out. Next on my list is Luxilon strings. I can't remember which ones I purchased but I have about 2 or 3 types of different thickness.

So, what are the best type strings for spin and tension? I wouldn't mind having a list of 5 that I can try with my stringing machine.

I wouldn't get a poly based on saving money on stringing. In reality, poly should cost you more as the need to restring it is greater.

I would get a pros pro reel and have at it.

If you want purely spin and tension go for Tour Bite. It holds tension better than a lot of its counterparts and plays for longer. Its draw back is that it doesn't have much feel, but a lot of these polys don't have it. Cyclone has decent feel, but that's because its slightly softer.

Have any of you tried the pro's pro stratagem to confirm how similar/different it actually is to RPM? do you think it's a copy or is it possibly just rebranded? How is the tension maintenance, durability and stiffness?
Thanks a lot!

Performance wise it's very similar, perhaps ever so slightly less durability.

But it also costs a fraction of the price, which more than makes up for it IMO.

I am a dumbass and strung it at 26 kg (measured 29/23 immediately) on Juice 100 PD. A little bit stiff in the beginning but after two sessions, it softened - in both cases with no whatsoever issues for my elbow. Tempted to try Strategem 1.30

Tourna Big Hitter Black 7 I think would be good to try...My first time hitting with it I thought of it as a "poor mans" RPM lol ($98 for a reel)

If you try solinco Tour bite dont make the same mistake I did and string it at 56lb it completely ruined the feel of the string came off very dead I'm actually contemplating just cutting it out its that bad. Heard a good tension for tourbite is in the high 40s if you can believe that....

I have strung a few reels worth of RPM blast. RPM is essentially a round poly when compared to the other shaped or twisted strings on the market.

The two less expensive alternatives that play very close are Genesis black magic and Kirschbaum pro line II. Both can be strung at the same tensions as the RPM.

Solinco tour bite and Big hitter black 7 are decent strings. Their shape is much more pronounced when compared to RPM. The feel and elasticity of those two strings are quite different from RPM. They feel different when being pulled during stringing AND also feel different when being used in your racquet.

Haven't tried pro's pro. They are much less expensive. Had a teaching pro in CA tell me he used one that was pretty close to RPM.

RPM lovers, give Tier One Firewire Black a try. It's on par with RPM blast for the first couple of hours regarding spin, feel & etc, but Firewire Black will surpass the overall performance of RPM blast by twofold. Price and quality of Firewire is hard to beat.

Firewire will feel a little more plasticy, but a dampener will help.

Cut it after 15 hours because it softened too much and started to throw while keeping the same tension, which is kind of strange. But comfy as nothing else... up to some healing effect on my recurrent TE. ;)

MSV Focus Hex. I use the 1.18 gauge, full bed, 53.5, in a PS97. Great spin, comfortable, durable, keeps tension, cheap.

I have Strategen 8 1.30 in my Yonex Ezone Xi 100 (16x18 ) right now, and I absolutely love it (strung at 52lbs).

I might be imagining this, but I feel I'm getting better control than with the 1.25, yet still plenty of spin, touch, and comfort (granted my frame is quite muted, I believe). I'm a 4.5-5.0 heavy spin baseliner

Kitshcbsum spiky black shark is the cheapest and most similar to RPM I have ever tried. Try the 16 gauge. At $6 per set its unbeatable

Good to hear that! Thank you for the feedback.
