Rune is on a 6-match losing streak.

I’ve said before I think he can contend until around 2028 or 2029. Don’t think more than 3/4 more is likely - he won’t keep winning every year. Do you think he could keep contending even into the 2030s?

Don't think so. At RG 2030 Nadal will be 43 and turning 44 on June 3, 2030. Even for Nadal I think that's a tough ask, but until I see someone other than Djokovic who is a threat to Nadal I'll keep backing him to win in the near future, meaning he'll probably win again next year and perhaps in 2024 as well. I suppose Alcaraz could be a threat, but until I see it I won't believe it.

He gets creamed in the RG final, and picks up yet another 250. There's a real top 10 player...

I respect you a lot, amigo - but lots of players lose slam finals in straights. Even Nadal and Djokovic in recent years.

Ruud wouldn't have been a top10 player 10 years ago, but that's the overall level on the tour's fault - not Ruud's. FAA gets less junk written about him, and he has 1 title to Ruud's 9 - and he was slain 1-6, 2-6 by that very player on HC on his home soil a few days ago...

Like Ruud or not - he is a serious player, a hard worker - and he is getting results.

Rune is still in mental diapers compared to Ruud.

But Rune making the asinine remark that he will win more RG's than Rafa is up there with the most delusional statement ever made by a tennis pro.
Yeah one of the dumbest statements ever by a player. It would be silly even if he had 5 RG titles already. Let's see if he even wins one.
Who knows, maybe Rune will go on a tear, and win like 12 RGs in the next five years? Someone's gotta win'em, and Rafa ain't getting any younger.

Also, Ruud appears to be more old-school than his NextGen colleagues.

He doesn't seem to scream for attention, or whine, or tank matches, or be a diva. He just gets on with it.

Even if Rune wins 12 RG's, he's still not accomplishing what he brags about. He'd still need 3 more to beat Rafa's unbreakable record.

This clown said he’d win 15 RG’s and break Nadal’s record. If this doesn’t say he needs to be shipped off to a damn nuthouse I'm not sure what does.

If every person who fails to understand pro tennis were shipped off to a nuthouse, they'd be pretty full pretty quick...

But hey, Rune can't be an expert at this sport like the few real experts...

Me, for example.

Thanks for the applause.

Any Danish fans here?

I'd like to know how the Danish press reacted to Rune's mental disintegration at FO QFs.

Because that's when this string started.

Maybe there's a connection. Between how the home press reacted...

2-9 since the French Open.

Signs of great improvement.

For someone who just turned 19, he is definitely improving this year compared to last.
If anyone told him at the beginning of this year he would win a title (with a beatdown against the world number #2) and make his first slam QF this year (with a win over the world number #4 and runner-up), he would have signed with both hands.
Even if he never wins another match until the end of this season, it won't take away his title, his Slam QF and his wins over Zverev and Tsitsipas.
It's not even like he is losing against Mugs. Last week he lost to PCB who won the title. In Cincinnati he lost against the world number #11 in 3h, 6-4 in the 3rd. In 2-3 years from now, he will be routinely beating guys like PCB and Norrie.

Except Alcaraz, no other 19yo player has a better ranking right now. The best youngest player after Rune is Draper, and he is already 1 year older.

So you're saying he should be HAPPY losing all the time and not make the effort untill next year or until he's 25?

Do you have any idea how many ATP teens won slams and M1000s?

Since Federer's arrival in the early 2000s? Surely not many. Federer (Wimbledon 2001 / Milan 2001) and Djokovic (RG 2006 / Amersfoort 2006) were both older than Rune when they reached their first Slam QF.
As for Masters1000... The only <20 who won a Masters lately are Nadal, Djokovic and now Alcaraz. Any other players?

I doubt Rune's career will be anything like these players but it's not a reason to discredit what he's achieved this year. He beat 2 top-5 including one in a Slam, he regularly troubles top-10 (Norrie would be top-10 with the Wimbledon points and Rune was only a few points away against him this week) and he already has his first Slam QF (only a couple weeks after his 19th birthday)

Again, at the moment the only better <20 player is Alcaraz. Musetti and Draper are 1 year older and they're behind Rune in the rankings.

You don't understand the context here.

This kid said he'd BEAT RAFA'S FO RECORD.

He also said he wants to be no 1.

Within THAT context he is being a failure in recent months.

Within the context of a JOURNEYMAN he is doing absolutely great, as you point out.

Why are you lowering the bar so much though? Rune is extremely ambitious hence this losing streak isn't good, at all.

Gee, I saw this interview. He wasn't serious when he said he would win 15 RG. He and the interviewer were teasing, it was kind of funny. No way he was being serious. Context is important. Even the most ambitious person in the world wouldn't seriously think he can win 15 RG. Let's be serious.

As for being #1, well... He still has a whole career ahead of him for that. 15 years, maybe 20. Most young talented players say they want to be #1 some day. Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Alcaraz, Sinner, Medvedev, Zverev... and MANY others said it. It's good to be ambitious. Even if Rune never even reaches the top-5, he has the right attitude. If he is improves in 2023-2024 as much as he did in 2022, I think he is on his way to the top-10 by 2025 and then who knows what can happen. Maybe he will be ranked #1 in 2035 and have the last laugh.

Make that 30.

His career will last 30 years, and he will become no 1 aged 47.

That leaves him plenty of time to lose R1 matches.

So easy becoming no 1! You lose 470 R1s in a row then - voila - no 1!

Magic.

I respect you, too. Still, as Casper's good friend Shania might say, titles -- they don't impress me much. They are all 250s, btw. His cupcake draws make me squint. However, his incredible consistency is noteworthy. Not top 5 worthy, but easily puts him in the top 8 today.

FAA deserves more criticism, not for his lousy record, but the fact that he has only reached two finals this year. I don't care that he was a precocious kid who couldn't close, but that he is promising player who performs better in Slams than the regular Tour events.

Then why is he playing at all?
Why don't you bother reading the 4 other threads on this topic here to learn why. Or just use Google? There's dozens of articles out there waiting to enlighten you about Holger's back and why he has still been playing.
