Southern's 18 Sectionals...

The 2019 4.0 Nationals guys from Intermountain had D1 level guys...at least two double bumped to 5.0!
Wow, I always thought based on the 5.0 level guys I know, with college backgrounds in D1 they would be above all that, crazy. I mean most of them I know don't take USTA that seriously, a good portion are a little "over" tennis in general for lack of a better word, but will play for fun on a team.

So D1 was supposed to be a humourous over exaggeration. Is there someone on YouTube that is comparable?

Heard that if he had one key player that he was missing the above might not have occurred for him to look like a bonehead captain LOL and could have possibly made it to finals. SC def had the toughest draw and some say they could have taken it with some depth.
And who knows if SC had Early Start league as well might be a different story as well.

Yeah Wallace got a double whammy. He was hurt but going to play Sat but then his boss wouldn't let him off Friday evidently.

I am kidding Fanning a bit knowing him very well for long long time. It is tough to play against the players you face at Sectionals in the heat, humidity and even tougher when you lose players last min that you thought you had.

Then things get tougher when you have others get hurt / dehydrated during matches, hence the Kudos to the GA and TN TO make it to the finals and GA to win. I am sure other teams were missing players as well, including TN & GA. Rarely do teams get to bring their entire team due to events that take priority over tennis.

hope nobody was hurt so they will miss more than a week or two of tennis.

Yeah hope everyone could get back at it. Especially with 40+ sectionals in 2 weeks.

I wasn't at Sectionals, but based on TN state tourney, no D1 level players were playing at 4.0. The TN guys fresh out of college or under 21 would be good non-national ranked division 2 players, some of those guys at 4.0 went on to southern, some were on teams that didn't win TN (am I an expert, no, but I've played at that collegiate level way back when and tennis playing and watching is a big part of my life, always has been). The strokes of some were near D1, but not the level of consistency nor the tactics. Competitive 4.5s yes, easy, and no, not 50 year old guys with crafty doubles skills, legit singles tourney contenders in the heat.

Still might have to bow down to TX for sandbagging, got a friend (yes, he shouldn't have sandbagged, but he is still a nice guy, just too obsessed with nationals) who self-rated at 3.5 and went to nationals doubles and singles non-team few years ago, had a super-champ pedigree in his teens, was not yet 30, and in 2 seasons was bumped to 4.5 where he now wins often at singles and doubles. Stuff like that is still maybe slightly superior to Southern action this year.
Personally, I'm not even sure I would have the mental whatever it takes to self rate at 3.5 and just go out destroying everything opponent, it would feel strange, awkward maybe. But perhaps sectionals 3.5 self rate vs. self rate is competitive lol.
it may be that the 4.5 courts i saw were all sandbagging 5.0s. either way, i didnt run into a “bad” player at sectionals.

i agree at the sandbagging. we decided that to have winning singles courts you gotta find some headcases that have managed to fly under the ratings radar.

Yes I felt like this was the strongest sectionals I have been apart of. The singles in particular really impressed me.USTA choosing not to publish year end definitely made a difference.

I'm very curious to see how your team does at nationals without an elite singles players.

You guys went 4-0 in third set tiebreaks in the semifinals and finals. Have to think eventually one of those goes for your opponents.

Maybe! The numbers probably say you are going to be right but what 4-0 in 3rd set tie break tells me is my guys know how to win. Being able to close out a match is a learned skill. Not saying we didn’t lose some but I think we were 7-1 in matches decided by 10 pt tb

I was playing 3.0 for AL, in my 4th match Saturday afternoon in the heat, I ended up pretty much collapsing on the court during our 3rd set tiebreaker at 8-9. Ended up having to get an IV in the clubhouse by a nurse that happened to be there. It was scary and a very painful experience (the cramping). That heat was no joke for us guys that had to play every match and weren't used to it.

Thought some of you might find it interesting that of the 90 or so players there this past weekend only 2 got dq'd. A 18 year old HS state singles runner up and a 50 year old who didn't play HS tennis. I saw and even played against some guys who I would consider much better players than myself that didn't get Dq'd.

One of @syshy111 team mates has a brother that played at Univ of Alabama...he might not be elite but he has a hitting partner to get him ready for nationals.

Plus two guys double bumped from 3.5 to 4.5 after they helped the same infamous captain win 3.5 nationals. So there were 5 guys double bumped from a single team. At this point, it's laughable. It's not a natural occurrence.

That captain should never get to captain or play with another USTA team again.

Is this a thing in the women's leagues too?
Not really that close at all, it bleeds into mixed sometimes notorious mens team captains are true trophy hunters, so they form mixed teams galore. I only know one female captain from TX that tennis really helps her mentally I think, it's not a beat the system thing she is doing, but she does form teams in 2-3 cities that are all-star type situations. The sandbagging though is not really close to the mens action. Maybe someone else has a different experience in their sections, I am talking about TX and TN/MS/AR/LA

I can speak for AR and will say there's a gal who is always playing below her level. It's more common on the men side though. There was a couple guys that got double bumped last year. They self rated as 3.5 lol

That's who I really want to interview, how can you enjoy spending free time whooping up on 3.5 competition when you are 2 levels above, I mean I suppose some people just have a lot of time on their hands or something strange. I mean those guys could play only second serves and still win at 3.5.

2022 bump -- the draws for week 1 (3.0, 4.0, 5.0) were released yesterday. I haven't heard about week 2's draw release.

I'm headed down from KY for 3.0. This is my first time advancing past state so I don't really know what results to expect. I'm hopeful for a weekend filled with fun, competitive matches though

Anyone playing this year? Predictions?

Aren‘t the Columbus guys always on this board complaining about how they can’t beat ATL teams because they are a small town, don’t have the numbers, etc?

so a team brings 10-12 guys it is a $960 entry fee plus travel expenses, not worth a towel and heat stroke and one free meal at player party.

I think more teams are going to be strong at sectionals vs. not. Have fun, enjoy the competition, and manage your body if it is hot and you are playing a lot of matches.

@schmke, any previews or predictions on Southern Sectionals?

Any hints? What team?

Let's just say it's a team, a program really at different levels, with a long history of hiding former junior players under level, though not quite to the same extent or with the same success as this Utah team everyone's going on about.

Is it someone who also played 4.5 states and won his first match there before retiring in his second after his team lost the match because he still had 4.0 finals to play that day?

Question for @schmke or anyone who knows. Is Tennessee/Georgia allowed to play their Early Start bump ups? I know they can’t play nationals but wasn’t sure if they finally disallowed it in sectionals or not.

Yea they can play sectionals if just year end bump up. Not in season DQ
That’s what I thought. What’s interesting at 4.0 is the wild card Tennessee team didn’t play theirs in districts. And one of their young ringers who I thought was computer rated some how has a 4.5D rating now. They were probably the better Tennessee team is my guess so lucky for them to get the wild card. I wonder if they’re trying to win without the bump ups. If so the DQ will hit them hard.

I'm pretty sure that happened in a different state.

Some teams don't bother with sectionals due to the cost and time required. Perhaps teams that travel further should have to pay less and teams that travel less pay somewhat more. Cost of gas and plane tickets have really shot up.
