This match deserves its own thread. Two of my favs, such a shame that these two have to play so early, but here we go!

That's the part that I'm most concerned about. His first come back last year(I think it was Brisbane), he didn't have any BH, just BH slice. Obviously, the wrist pain must be preventing him from hitting fully powered BH yet. I wonder if he'll ever get it back.

Not sure what you mean here, but these two met in 2012 @ Wimbledon, and Stan won in straight sets. That was the year Del Potro played the epic match in the Olympics a few weeks later against Fed, and then won a bronze medal over Djokovic. Gotta feel like this Del Potro with all the injuries, nowhere near that level both mentally and physically. Also, 2012 was pre-Stanimal, before he won a title or pushed the heavyweight champion to 5 sets in New York (2012) and Australia (2013). So, I gotta back Stan in this one.

How weird is it that Delpo has won 3 straight matches on clay (most recently 2012), while Stan has won their only encounter on grass (Wimbledon 2008, l. to Safin in R4)?

Anyway, I hope it's a great battle! I'm rooting for my guy, as always, but I love Delpo, too! Will be a wonderful moment no matter who wins.

I agree Delp's B H loooks weak. But Stan does as the spirit moves him and nothing can make him do otherwise. So if Delp can hang in, Stan might say aw f!@# it and go back to Geneva.

I concur. Delpo is back enough to win a set - 2nd or 3rd. That's about it. Unless Stan is just horrid (or just can't get the ball to Delpo's BH), he'll get the job done.

Haha. I like Stan, but he's in with Z, Thiemerer, and God Potro. I also analyze and the Stanimal is look a little long in the tooth (ditto Simon these days, but Ferrer of all people suddenly looks amazing and his fall in the rankings appears to have been due to injury issues and time off.)

Just watched God Potro replay from first round and he looks awfully good. Stan's best hope is that Delpo did not have a lot of aces in that match. The two hander is looking better and the slice looks great on grass; a rock of consistency. Forehand is just amazing.

If Stan escapes this round Tomic will be another stumbling block in R16. Tomic won their lone Wimbledon grass match in 2011 when a mere pup.

Stan's draw looks easy, but he's in matchup hell.

What are you talking about? In 2012 Del Potro lost to Ferrer in the R16 under the roof on Centre.

Stan and Delpo played at Wimbledon in 2008 (Stan won in straights and lost to Safin in R4).

Anyway, their match has been suspended for tomorrow. It's the right decision to try to get R1 matches done, but it's frustrating that a handful of players are already into R3 while some R1 matches (like Bacsinszky-Kumkhum) have yet to even begin.
