Tennis quality 2013

Has anyone thought that the performances this year have been a little lackluster? I keep walking away feeling short changed across the board. The serving and double faults has got to be some of the worst ever. Any similar thoughts?

Yea its been pretty bad. Outside of Nadal, no one has impressed really.

Murray played great at wimbledon only to follow it up with all these upsets. Fed is MIA for the most part now. Nole's level is half of what it was in 2011, probably 3 quarters of what he was last year.

The rest of the tour isn't even worth talking about

And that's the saddest part...

Totally agree. I find myself missing more and more of these big matches in Masters events in 2013.

Because to be honest, a Raonic-Pospisil or even a Nadal-Berdych match isn't even worth the electricity...

I'd tend to agree. Other than Djokovic - Wawrinka AO and Djokovic - JMDP W, it has been a little light on great matches. Other than that, seems like we'll get a set or so of great play here and there.

And yeah, young dudes need to start seriously challenging some of the top guys.

Still beats watching golf...

So what we are saying is Nadal is dominating in probably the weakest played field this year. Good on him.... Ok I'm joking, not meant to start a jihad.

I agree though there weren't any games this year that would be showcased on espn classic.

no, its true... I guess what bothers me is no young up and coming has been the reason really, and this year would have been the year to do it. It just seems like tjis year has been ugly for tennis. Look how Haas lost to Fed yesterday, Djoko to Nadal in Montreal.... It just seems like guys are one upping a hohum performance by the guy across the net. I know IW was a few months ago, but DelPo had the match on his stick, for no apparent reason gets ****ed in his service game then was too tired to to really put forth an effort in the third. Its just that second set up a break serving for it, had no real service problems to that point and like a switch plays horrible. no disrespect to Nadal but Delpo just played like crap like djoko last week tiebreaker and todays third set.

I almost feel as though everyon got bored with Nads absence and laid off the training maybe the competitive interest died with it some?

oh come on, delpo was coming off two marathon 3-setters vs djokovic/murray in 2 days ...... he was bound to feel it in the final vs nadal and did ....

There have been quite a few good players this year. Whenever Del Potro is healthy he is a beast on any surface. Wawrinka played career-best tennis the first half of the year. Only thing that has been out of place is the top 4 have been less amazing than usual.

That s what happened in the third, but he was serving for I th in the second, anyone that actually watched would know what I am talking about.

I disagree. Nadal has been nothing less than phenomenal since his return from injury. 8 titles including 5 big ones. In fact all the big titles this year have been the preseve of the Big 4 as usual with Slams and Masters titles for Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. Only Federer has failed to shine this year. Del Potro and Wawrinka may have enjoyed a good season but neither of them have yet managed to snatch any of the big titles from the clutches of the Big 4!

A losing beast. Still waiting for his next big title since USO 2009, that's 4 years now. It's starting to seem quite long.

Doesnt it seem like he always gonna earn a title though? He never seems to have an easier road to a semi or final unlike some people that seem too more often than not.

I actually wondered if this could be a Murraydal year. I could see Djoko starting to tire out but it's shaping up as mostly a Nadal year in the end. Of course, the USO will be the decisive event.

This week is his chance then. He's had an easy draw and Isner sure is an easier proposition than Djoko. Then Nadal could be a bit gased in the final. It's now or never for Delpo. He's not that young anymore and Cincy's surface speed should suit him.

That would have been nice to see Murray run with it for a little, as it stands he has regressed to 2007 form, and Djoko to 2010 form. we havent even seen a Murray/Nadal match this year

There have been some good matches, but the big guys bar Nadal have lacked consistancy (outside the slams). Djokovic especially has been losing to people he shouldn't, Murray has had his typical unexplainable losses too. The less said about Federer the better.

The field does feel weaker.

I have to say this bc I get tired of this statement about 2010, and it's starting to come up now.... (this post isn't directed at you btw). But how was 2011 stronger than 2010 for example? Djokovic beat up on the SAME FIELD. How was 2007 or 2006 stronger than 2010? Some things for people to think about.

2011 was stronger because Djokovic and Federer were alot better than they are now. Murray wasn't as good but that's balanced by Djokovic and Federer. The rest of the top 10 these days is pretty nutless when they face off against the top guys. At the slam level Murray and Djokovic are still very consistant this year but at the masters level they've fallen off alot. That wasn't the case in 2011.

As for 2010, Federer, Murray and Djokovic were all slumping for most of the year. Djokovic especially was crap not beating a top 10 player till the USP and not even advancing to the finals of a masters IIRC. Federer had back to back quarter final exits, and in every slam bar Australia he played better in 2011.

the best player of 2011 - djokovic > nadal of 2010
the 2nd best player of 2011 - nadal > federer of 2010 ( by a significant margin )
3rd best player of 2011 - federer > djokovic of 2010 ( by a significant margin )

so yeah ....

2007 - had federer at his peak, nadal playing very well and djokovic who was better than he was in 10

contrast to 2010 - nadal at his peak, federer past his ( worse than nadal in 07 ) and djokovic who was worse than he was in 07

2006 - was more or less similar to 10 IMO ...

Nadal beat like three top 10 players from Jan 2010- June 2010 to get no. 1, the field was so bad. I remember he was 4-13 or so (don't remember exactly) in past 12 months against top 10 from RG 2009 to RG 2010. Only Nadal was consistent in 2010 while others were losing left and right and in bad form. Compare it to Djokovic who had to beat the best to get to No. 1 and everyone was consistent and playing well.
