Rafael Nadal is a better player than Roger Federer.
I am a huge Federer fan, I am disapointed, I'm frustrated, angry and sad, and this match proved once again how terrible this match up is.
I think this match puts an end to the argument about who's superior.
its now 7-2 in slams, 2-0 hard courts, 4-0 clay, 1-2 grass.
Heck yeah Federer is more talented, Heck yeah Federer style is more beautiful to watch, but the number speaks for themselves.
I'm not saying Nadal is generally better than Federer in slam numbers because of course 16>>>10 but, specificly, whenever they both meet from now on, Nadal is the absolute favorite, it's like federer doesn't have anything to offer anymore. as usual played a good match and didn't use his chances.
Nadal is clearly superior than Federer in slams.
And don't get started on the fact that it's all because nadal couldn't reach a hard court slam during Fed's prime cuz even back then he was able to put a beating on federer. IM honestly sick of this rivarly, i mean what can i do? it just sucks to watch someone i adore so much as a tennis player, get beaten so much... kudos to Rafael Nadal, he is an amazing player, whether you like his style or not.

Maybe tennis is too complicated for you. You clearly don't know how players are ranked, it is never by h2h.

Nadal is not even close to being a better player than Fed. He isn't even as good as Fed is,period. Stop overreacting.

Are you not counting indoor? Fed's record against Nadal is 4-0. I guess you would claim that Nadal is the greatest...but not on grass or indoor?

I didn't say that, Of course Federer overally is a much much much better than Nadal, he is miles ahead of Nadal!! I mentioned that 16>>>>>>10 and federer is much more amazing in every aspect and im proud to be his fan.
But what I meant is that when you look at their rivarly, and their h2h, you see that Nadal clearly has the advantage man..
And yeah im trying to get a grip but its so frustrating :(

True, also, expect this 16-10 GS record to be more like 16-13 by the end of the season. Nadal will surely win the AO now as well as the FO, and probably Wimbly as well.

Hmm, he definatly has a great momentum now, you still can't forget the Djokovic factor.. he beat nadal in Wimby and US open last year. in RG I expect nadal to win there is no doubt about that. however he still has djoko in his back so we'll have to see about that

I understand where the original post is coming from. Nadal isn't a better player than Federer, but clearly Fed's game doesn't match up well with Nadal. Nadal just pounds on Fed's backhand, which although a beautiful stroke, eventually breaks down. You can say that Nadal is a better player than Fed when he has more career slams than Fed.

Federer will have at least one more grand moment before he goes off into the sunset.

And when that moment comes, we the fans will bask in the moment.

Can I get a hear hear??? :)

I don't care too much about the h2h bc every player has 1 or 2 opponents who are nightmare match ups. It's just that in Roger's case the nightmare is someone who is another one of the best players of all time who keeps making it to Gs finals to beat Roger. The problem I have is in how visibly shaken Roger is when playing Nadal. He really looks like he is having the shakes - making poor decisions on shot selection and then not putting away easy balls with conviction. It's this mental collapse that detracts the most from his GOATness. Because while I think he is the most talented and most successful ever, it's clear that he has a kryptonite that kills him each and every time. If we defined the GOAT as the player you'd most want to have playing for your life, would you pick Roger when you know all your enemy needs to do is put Rafa on the other side of the net? By the same argument, Rafa, as of late has his own kryptonite in Djokovic but I think he still has time to cure it. Given where Roger is in his career and how many huge matches he's lost to Nadal, it's clear for him there will be no cure.

That will be hard to do considering Fed will have a very tough time at the FO beating Nadal. And at Wimbledon, where his seeding will be based on his last 2 years where he reached the quarters, it will probably be between 5 and 8.

I reserve Wimbledon for Murray. Come on give the guy a break ! I love England and they deserve a Champion. :)

The guy is a great champion but he looks tentative everytime against Nadal.

He is one of the greats of all time but when considering him to be the best of all time, they will mentioned Nadal's name. Why couldnt u beat him more.

Federer's last slam victory over Nadal was at Wimbledon'07, and even at his peak, on a low-bouncing surface, having all the confidence of a 4-time champion and beating Nadal there in 06, it still took him five sets to win it.

This just shows how enormous the challenge has been.

It's not nitpicking. It's like saying Nadal is from Portugal.

The nation of Spain and the nation of Portugal are 2 separate countries altogether. But England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland constitute the United Kingdom. You people can be all regionalistic all you want, but I see you as one. So, nit picking to me.

England and Scotland are considered separate countries as well, neither of which are a sovereign state or nation state on their own, though they both belong to the same one, the UK. Saying Murray is from England is just as wrong as saying he is from Northern Ireland or from Wales.

+1,

I created a thread that disappeared, but i said Fed just can't beat Nadal, Nadal owns Fed, good thing is Djokovic is there to save the Fed fans who don't want to see nadal winning another slam.

Did you seriously expect him to win this? To put this in perspective, it's almost 9 years since Federer won his first slam, and he wasn't even super young at the time.

If Nadal was beating Federer in hardcourt slams back in 2006 then that would be different. Sadly Federer's prime was 2004-2007 and Nadal's is now. Plus every time he loses Federer takes a bit hit in the brain. His time to beat Nadal in big matches passed years ago, and right now the matchup is turning more and more in Nadal's favour.

Do you even play tennis? Try allowing yourself a half a minute between points and see how long the locals let you play with them.

The problem is that there is no indoor slam, so whatever Fed does indoor, it will never count as much or have as much impact as what happens in the slams.
I don't think Fed is better than Rafa on grass anymore. It's too bad Rafa didn't play W in 2009 and Fed didn't do well there in 2010 and 2011. I would love to see another match on grass between them and I'm ready to bet it wouldn't take Rafa 5 sets this time around.

Well of course it won't take 5 sets. The gap between nadal and Federer is naturally widening, there is no way Federer is going to be as good in 2012 as he was even in 2008. Nadal has gotten better and Federer has gotten worse. The best chance of a grass meeting is the Halle final this year. I don't know how anyone actually gets satisfaction out of such things these days (2008/2009, yes cos it was close back then) but this is like fed fans hoping he plays Roddick again. It's an easy win most times, not actually a test of ability before like Wimbledon 2008 and AO 2009 were. Nadal no longer needs to even play well to beat Federer. I mean his bunny Berdych gave him a harder match.

maybe its because theres a 5 year difference between their ages. federer's career will not have an asterisk because he couldn't beat a guy who matched up better against him.

that's impossible to say nadal is better than fed (though i like nadal's play more). at least not until nadal wins more GS than fed. even so, fed is at least technically better than rafa

can't get enough of this picture :)
i guess i just didn't express my opinion precisely enough so before anyone else tries to take a shot at me, read this.
what i meant is that when it comes to another meeting between those two, rafael nadal has clear advantage, as of this day i thought that roger can still beat nadal in a hardcourt slam and i dunno, i came with high expectations from federer to win this match cuz his form looked so good and he didn't drop a set but i was proven wrong today, i guess i just have to accept the fact that federer is no longer the young guy he used to be and that both rafa and djokovic are very strong contendors at their prime. however it's amazing that at 30 years old the guy is wiping out the court with everyone else and consistantly making slams finals and semi-finals!
by saying "rafael nadal is a better player than roger federer" i merely meant that when this two meet nadal officialy has the advantage, NOT generally cuz of course federer's record is better and nadal has a lot lot lot lot to prove before he can step in federer's tier so yeah, federer is a better player than nadal but rivarly wise and h2h wise, nadal is superior, in every aspect expect for indoors...

If all their clay meetings were switched with Indoor Hard, the h2h would have been the other way around. People shouldn't take the h2h too seriously since you can't expect Federer to lead it when the majority of their matches have been on Nadal's surface. The only way for Federer to ever beat Nadal on these surfaces is to play incredible well with his forehand hitting the lines consistently. Those days are far behind him but he may be able to do it around a couple of games. But doing it for a couple of games won't win any matches at this level.

I'm happy with Federer's performance and sure he did make some stupid mistakes but his glory days are over now aside from some big wins here and there (RG11). He personally showed me that if he was any younger he would have finished this in 4. I was expecting a straight set beat down for Nadal, at least Federer made things competitive at times.

Nadal is clearly better than Federer on these kind of surfaces that suit Nadal's game but Federer is clearly better than Nadal on surfaces that suit his game. I mean Nadal has struggled to win a single set off Federer on Indoor in their past 4 encounters.

Raz11: indoor is less and less relevant as a surface. There used to be 2 indoor masters, now there's only 1 left (Paris) and it's the last one of the year, (the one with most withdrawals due to fatigue or injury). Slams will always be outdoor.
