One of my biggest issues atm is closing the gap between what i do in practice and what i do in actual matches.
I have very limited match practice (i think i've played something like 20/30 matches total since i've picked up tennis 2 years ago...)
So lately instead of actually drilling on my practice sessions, me and my coach have been playing some points so that i can become more confortable with being moved around the court, etc.
As you all know, it's quite different to hit a tennis ball when you know where it's going to land (as in drills) vs hitting a tennis ball on the run on an actual match.

The improvement in just over a week's time (4 total practices including the one on the video) is amazing. On the 1st practice we played points, i was hitting UE's left and right after 1 or to 2 balls, missing 90% of my ROS,etc,etc... Pretty much what was happening with all the matches i had played so far...

Today i had the best practice yet. Felt really confortable hitting with my coach.

Some side notes regarding the video:

1- I apologyse for the camera angle. After i set up the camera on the fence, apparently it shifted a bit and i didn't realized. Hence the weird angle...

2- Obviously my coach would win every single point if he was trying to do so. But that was not the goal. The goal is to improve my consistency, so he was returning the ball, moving me on the court and punishing any short ball i gave him.

3- Go easy on me. Like i said, i only picked up tennis 2 years ago, and have very limited match practice...

4- Obviously i have flaws in my strokes like everyone else, but before you say anything about my serve, atm due to a limitation i have from an injury i can't actually jump when serving. Thus i'm serving as best as i can without jumping.

5- at 1:47 i thought the ball would jump higher than it did, hence explains the misshit...

6- at 2:37 i gave up on the point after i tried to lob my coach, because had it been a real match, point would be pretty much over then...

7- at 4:57 i hesitated between volleying the ball, or letting it bounce then go for the approach shot. Decided a half a second too late and put the ball into the net.

8- at 5:18 i brain farted. Adjusted my self badly and when the ball came i was too close to it to hit the BH. So i just froze and did nothing!!! :D

9- at 5:55 after i ROS and my coach hits his FH, a freaking bee flew right by my eyes and i lost track of the ball for a moment. Hence why i stopped the play.

10- at 6:11, after hitting the short ball i just stood there watching to see if my coach would get to the ball or not, instead of believing he would. So yeah, dumb me!!!

Not sure if he's going easy on you but serve aside you already seem better than your coach. I would try to make friends with some of his other clients and set up some friendly matches with them and save your coaching lesson for other things or save your money all together.

Also next time, hammer his backhand...

Yeah like i said, he's going easy on me. He's a former player mate. So there's no way i'm better than him... All he's doing is returning balls to me to move me around the court and punishing short balls. Trust me, he's playing at like 5 or 10% of what he can play lol...

And yeah, already setting up matches with one of his clients, and although i can understand the saving money part, the good thing about playing these practice points with my coach is the instant feedback after each point. And that is worth the money lesson trust me :D

Appreciate the feedback, thx.

That didn't look like warmup: that looked like both of you were trying to pound the ball.

Also, 90+% of your shots were FHs.

Thx for replying. That actually was a warm up right after mini tennis. Both me and my partner like to pound the ball, but neither is too consistent meanwhile, which is something we need to work on for sure.

I just watched again and realized even though only 10% of shots are backhand I still missed most of them. That’s really embarrassing. Considered switching to a two handed but so hard to pull the trigger since that requires a lot of practice and my court time is decreasing recently.

I’ll try to make a better video next time. Thanks.

You have quite a powerful FH so I assumed you built your game around it and that's why you hit so few BHs. If you can get the consistency of your BH up to somewhere around your FH, you will have a much improved game. As it is, you probably win a fair amount just due to your FH.

Warmup is actually excellent as well for practicing consistency, placement, control over the ball...you can start using it this way, it will surely help.

Recorded a few more vids

Only watched the tiebreak vid, man your line calling is terrible! Your friend I reckon only missed one first serve (he has an awesome serve btw) but you called half of them out.

Hold on there Carlos fking Ramos, do you have Hawkeye vision or did u use YouTube’s 0.1x speed on a 8000x120000 pixels screen to analyze? He serves a big ball 115-120 pretty accurately but it’s not a SoCal summer day and I’m going to call the ball if I see it’s out. I might have hooked one line call on the ad but as far as I’m concerned that’s the only one. In the words of immortal Serena, “I’d rather lose than cheat” - why don’t you nitpick your own game than try to ump mine?

Nice groundstrokes!
btw, where are those courts? I rarely see courts that are painted only with singles lines.
Many thanks! These courts are in McCarren Park in Brooklyn. There is another singles only court at the Hudson River Park - in NYC but indeed they are a rare bunch these days.

This got me curious so I downloaded and watched the serves frame by frame. It's impossible to see close line calls on such a fast serve without super slow motion.
1 serve way out (wide) on deuce side.
at least 2 other serves that looked long by a little bit. (can't tell for sure)

I don't see any blatantly bad line calls at all.

Yup. That's why I looked so tired in that video.
Hope you the chemo was effective and wish you a speedy recovery.

I have a friend who just finished a half year of chemo and luckily it knocked everything back into remission. Had spread quite a bit.

Finally filmed and uploaded an actual match on my channel. It's a bit of a miss-match perhaps, I'll try to get some footage with better opponents.

I'm the one with "orange" hair =D

Good hitting, how do make calls though, with no lines on the court:D

Great to see this thread! So I used to post videos on these message boards many many years ago. Glad to see that it's just as active as before!

I haven't recorded much less posted for a while. I believe my last recording was about 4 years ago. So I decided to dust off my camera and took a few minutes to see what Ilook like on camera these days :)

Here is a video sample of my Tennis Journey on TW (and ET)over the past 10 years!

First Video Ever posted (This and Part 1. Part 2 has a better angle):

A Year or Two Later. Christmas:

Sectionals at Indian Wells! Doubles:

Killed my Ankle and took me out for 6 months+ :

Last Match/Video I posted, 4 years ago, before a hiatus. Singles:

Last Week, Feb 2019. Fast Foward to 1:18 to skip me setting up the camera and picking up balls after two hits:

Hope to start filming more. Maybe get a better camera, one that is newer than 10 years old!
