The next American grand slam winner? Is he currently playing?

I noticed out of 10 Americans in the first round of the French open only 1 made it to the second round. Very poor. I know clay isn’t Americans best surface but still.

It got me wondering who will the next American slam winner be? Is he even currently on the tour?

Is there any potential next gen slam winner from the states? 15 16 17 18 year old who are any good?

Also I can’t help but notice why does every American have double handed back hands for the last 20 years?

Strange times indeed.

I already think you’ve mispelled the second part of your username. You wanted to write D at the beginning, but the R and D are so close to each other on the keyboard that you’ve made a typo. Also, I think you’ve mispelled Ginger in the first part of your username.

Also this might be a hot take but looking at current Americans, I fully believe that opelka or Paul has what it takes from a game play style. Paul and Opelka both were hampered with injuries (or mono in the case of smiley). I know people will call out opelka as a one dimensional serve bot but when you watch his game, awkward as it is, he does a lot right.

Yeah no time soon, and one handed backhand is an elegant motion. I would say Americans are not known for their elegance, and now tennis. Then again, as a Fed fan I think my son will start with a two hander considering it is more affective in most cases.

Damn I've been calling Federer 'Fred' so often I thought Roddick might get 20 Slams in 61 years.

But I guess he kinda is already but I imagine that part of his legacy will just grow over time. It would be nice for him to be remembered as a winner rather than the guy who lost the record Wimbly final.

One can ask the same question of many other nationalities. Is the next Australian, French, German, Swedish, Russian, British Grand Slam singles winner currently playing or have any of them been born yet? :cool:

- Britain (3 yrs: Murray, 2016 W)
- Russia (14 yrs: Safin, 2005 AO)
- USA (16 yrs: Roddick, 2003 US)
- Australia (17 yrs: Hewitt, 2002 AO)
- Sweden (17 yrs: Johansson, 2002 AO)
- Germany (23 yrs: Becker, 1996 AO)
- France (36 yrs: Noah, 1983 FO)

Hewitt Wimbledon 2002, then blew his chance to win the AO in 05 against Safin.

France... All the money they spend and the best they got in the last decades is Tsonga reaching a GS final and winning a couple of M1000 lol

As I've said several times before, French men's tennis is the best example of how, no matter how good your youth/coaching system is, you can't simply produce champions. France has, for many decades, had a consistent pipeline of top 10/20 players, guys who reach slam QFs/SFs/some finals, but only one French male in the past 70 years has managed to get over the final hurdle and win a slam.

73 years to be precise. Prior to Noah in 1983, the last French male champion at Roland Garros was Marcel Bernard in 1946. Yvon Petra then won Wimbledon the following month.

Yeah right...maybe when they ban the entire line-up of next-gen players after the last member of big-3 retires for that one particular tournament! And even then they would have to ask 36 years old Cilic, 39 years old Wawrinka and 34 years old Nishikori to play using only one hand and jump on one foot instead of running on two...then maybe...just maybe...

I really like Mackenzie McDonald (in spite of his foolish name). I have been waiting for him to put things together for a while. A slightly more consistent serve, and really putting in effort to becoming a quality returner would make a huge difference to his results.

Unfortunately I think the era of short guys winning Grand Slams went out with Lleyton Hewitt, but he could definitely make some waves in the top 20.
