John Lee Hooker. Saw him, Van Morrison, and met Elvis Costello the same day twenty years ago. It was the same day Hingis had a meltdown against Graf in the French Open final, which I recorded and watched the next day after watching Agassi beat Medvedev live. I think I watched the Sunday men's final on three hours of sleep.

Moves like Jagger's Ruby Tuesday

19 & 18 years ago around the same time I watched Pete [on court] getting beat in consecutive years by Marat and Lleyton in back-to-back finals, hence, my affinity towards both of them--they're probably the only two 2hbh players I liked [I play a 1hbh].

TGI Fridays. I have been to one in La Jolla and in Beijing. Their veggie burger isn't bad, and their Long Island iced tea is dangerous.

I have never tried a Zombie and looked it up.

The Zombie is a cocktail made of fruit juices, liqueurs, and various rums. It first appeared in late 1934, invented by Donn Beach at his Hollywood Don the Beachcomber restaurant. It was popularized on the East coast soon afterwards at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

Legend has it that Donn Beach originally concocted the Zombie to help a hung-over customer get through a business meeting. The customer returned several days later to complain that he had been turned into a zombiefor his entire trip. Its smooth, fruity taste works to conceal its extremely high alcoholic content. Don the Beachcomberrestaurants limit their customers to two Zombies apiece because of their potency, which Beach said could make one "like the walking dead."

I had to do a search on these. This gave the edge to Zap:

The first issue of Zap was sold on the streets of Haight-Ashbury out of a baby stroller pushed by Crumb's wife Dana on the first day. In years to come, the comic's sales would be most closely linked with alternative venues such as head shops.

Speaking of magazines with cartoons, this is an interesting documentary:

John Belushi film:

National Lampoon's Animal House

or The Blues Brothers?

"This or That" Bonus:

John Belushi died in Chateau Marmont.

Lana Del Rey sings "Born To Die" poolside at Chateau Marmont.

Having spent much of my preteens in Noo Yawk, I'd say I've always been enamoured by the sleek [if not phallic--albeit sharp and pointed] Tower of Babel-like heaven-piercing spire . . . and marble, metal and metallic colours, etc. So, Chrysler over King Kong tower, over remembrance tower in lieu of the Twin Towers [one can never appreciate it enough until it is no more].

Gotta go with The Nickel; I did 95 many times and always tried to make that drive bearable with some variation, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel.

Belushi in Chateau Marmont

Janis Joplin in Landmark Motor Hotel

There are connections here to two of my old L.A. haunts.

Done for the night, on October 3, 1970, Janis Joplin and her band hung out at the famous Barney’s Beanery, where she consumed drinks and possibly some chili. Then it was back to Room 105 at the Landmark Hotel for her last shot of heroin. The 27-year-old singer was found dead on the floor beside her bed the next day.

The only food found in John Belushi’s stomach after he overdosed was lentil soup, which he’d eaten in the kitchen of L.A.’s Rainbow Bar and Grill on March 5, 1982, after friends urged him to consume something other than alcohol and drugs. Belushi then returned to his bungalow at the Chateau Marmont, where Catherine Evelyn Smith (the inspiration for Gordon Lightfoot’s 1974 hit “Sundown”) gave the 33-year-old “SNL” alumnus what turned out to be a lethal dose of heroin and cocaine.
