Throwing a football and serving

That mothe****ing horizon just pisses me off.

No matter how far you walk, or play or work or have sex along the way it's still the same distance away.....

I'm back packing up a 40 mile hill, and I think I can see the pass, and when I get there, it's just another switch back and another lumpy hill upward.

When you run out of water you start dumping things to lighten the load. I didn't really need those pitons, or that chair, or that extra jug, or the silverware, or the camera, or the lead fishing weights or those condoms.

Just threw a football for the first time yesturday in a year, distance was still pretty good. I took video of a 55 yard throw NO WIND, not my greatest but still good to see. By the end of the year I hope to get it to about 60 yards.

You kick my butt...
I'm down to 47 yards, first try, no warmups.
And it's a downhill slide from there.
My standing longjump is down to 6'4" first try no warmup, down over 40" from high school.
Who says it's nice to get old?
But screwing around the windsurfing rigging area, I could still do 10 extended pushups, but didn't push it for max.

Nice, 3 steps and POP....
I think I lost 3 yards from that stinking ankle sprain alone. Just can't push off it for forehands either. Serves, with pinpoint, I actually push off more with my right foot than my sprained left.

Ok heres the video, gets dark at the end, but the ball hits the fence while still in the air, and fence is around 53 yards away, so total maybe high 50s. Full screen reqd

Nice throw. I definitely think throwing a football is closer to serving than throwing a baseball. I've seen pictures of Ljubicic throwing a weighted football as part of his serve training.

However, throwing anything is somewhat specialized. I can easily bring 100mph on my serve on a good day and I don't have much of an arm for throwing a football or a baseball.

Thanks - yeah I find that the motion are somewhat similiar. Started throwing when I was around 8 so I have just under 10 years of practice.

I hang out most days at the CalSailingClub.....SuperDuy knows it.
The lightpoles, both over 30' high, are exactly 150 feet apart.
Something that even YOU can figure out....stand near one, toss to the other !
For me, 50 SHOULD be an easy toss. I've gone as far as 75 in high school, well over 60 in 7th grade. Houses in my block, the SunsetDistrict of SanFrancisco, are exactly 30' wide. Count the houses. I normally threw a little over 7 houses distance.
It's not rocket science.

The key is a relaxed motion and just throw up the bal up and rotate core.

Superduy's got a cannon.

I guess the arm motion for a football throw is pretty similar, but I still think a baseball throw is more so. When you throw a football, you have to roll it off the fingers to get a spiral. In baseball, if you're not throwing a curveball or something, there's no spin, the release is more similar to a serve.

Edit

nevermind, just saw a video of joe montana saying pronation creates a spiral, lol.

Eh, you're too quick for my slow reflexes.
Halfway thru your post, I was gonna chime in with my 2c worth about service pronation a neccessary ingredient of the football toss.
And you already know, a baseball curveball is a supination (twist leading with the pinkie), the opposite of the football throw.:):):)
Funny thing.... I seriously think my football throw distance is decreasing each month! Old age is nothing to cheer about.

I think we can time the flight of the ball to get an idea.
Look at SuperDuy too. He's obviously pretty strong and in shape.
Duy, you working out with weights? You look buff.

After reading this entire thread, I suspect LeeD may have been the best athlete that posts on these boards in his prime.

I propose the LeeD challenge to any of you who think you can measure up.

Lee will you please give your best estimates of your top performances in the following categories and we will see if anyone thinks they can come close to your numbers.

Top Serve Speed mph:
Football distance throw in yards:
Softball throw in feet:
FG kick in yards:
Tennis ball toss in feet:
Standing broad jump in feet:
Tallest wave surfed in feet:
Number of cars jumped on motorcycle:

I was suspecting this was the case and about to post about football pass pronation when I saw your Montana reference. I threw the football wrong for years before discovering the power of pronation in my throws.
Good find on the Montana ref.

Yes, I definetely WIN the least amount of $$$ made over a lifetime of slaving and actually showing up on time.
I can say I should win the benchpress test....max 85 lbs in high school.
I once tossed the 16' shotput about 9'. In high school.
How many of you can say you tried your best to get good at...., at least 8 different sports, and failed at everyone one of them.
I think I"ve broken more bones than any of you....well over 30.
My footprint is flatter than yours.
And how many of you can claim your wrong hand hits a better forehand than your correct, normal hand?
Oh, can you sleep in a HondaCivic Hatchback for 1.5 years?

I've always noticed that when I'm throwing very lightly I have to spin it off my fingers, but when I went try to throw farther the spiral just happens. Now I know why!

This is truly a GOAT thread. I threw an American football for the first time yesterday over 35 yards and was pretty happy with myself, but now not so much because LeeD was throwing twice as far, as a little kid.

I used to throw 70+ yards as a little kid.

Yeah, and right now, today, a 66 year old with 4 broken collarbones, 3 shoulder separations, 1 dislocate, 3 lower leg compound fractures, can throw a football 10 yards farther than you.
What does that say about your 35 yard toss?
How far can someone your GRANDPA's age throw football? Dude, I'm 66. Imagine how far I could throw a football at 14.

You and LeeD are indeed kindred, football-chucking spirits. LeeD was rumored to have spent many cold winter nights in Winnipeg close to 20 years ago while doing some wind surfing on the ice. Just sayin'. :D
