US Open Final - Jelena Jankovic[2] vs Serena Williams[4]

Even though most of you tennis purists simply don't care, the GS final deserves a poll.

Their head to head is 3-3, and they also split their two this year matches, with Jelena winning convincingly in the AO QF 2-0 and Serena winning the Miami final 2-1 in a weird, momentum swinging match.

The way she was playing here Serena is clear favorite, but Jelena is playing better every new round. I hope Jelena will bring her best game and challenge Serena for the title. She can be a tough matchup for Serena.

The winner will also be the new WTA #1 ranked player.

Jelena in 3 sets. Serena isnt playing all that great here as some make it out to be. She was outplayed by Venus and won since many believe the match was staged for Serena to win, thus Venus throwing away all those points at the end of both sets, and if it wasnt staged Venus is the biggest choker on the planet since no way should Serena have won that match. In the semis Serena played ok tennis and won by a crushing score only since Safina played pathetically.

I said Serena in 2. I think she wants it, and part of her motivation is losing Wimbledon this year. Even if she isn't playing well, I think her determination will carry her through. Jelena does have the goods to make this a match, though, and she's beaten Serena on hardcourts before...part of it depends on which Jelena shows up. I'm hoping JJ won't be playing as if she's satisfied just to be runner-up.

I also think the people who think the Williams semi was staged probably also think there was some kind of conspiracy against Nadal (instead of a tropical storm). Delusional.

That statement is much more of a joke then people thinking the freakishly wierd Serena-Venus match was staged (which yes it probably was). So if you dont have interest in a final after what has been one of the worst quality WTA slams in history you are not a tennis purist somehow, ummm ok.

For the record I doubt I will watch it but Serena in 3 sloppy sets probably.

Then I guess most people who watch tennis arent tennis purists to you since the ratings for this final will be way down there even in the U.S. I gaurantee it. Purists probably are actually probably the most likely to appreciate good tennis and the womens tournament at the U.S Open hasnt provided it.

Yeah I agree. Jelena has nothing in her game to hurt Serena except on clay. A sorry excuse for a womens slam final on fast courts.

as for the match itself....no final for the past like....5 years at the open has gone three sets....so if that pattern holds this one will be over fast. If the match has any quality it could go three, I want to see Jelena win, just so she can get her first major and silence some of her naysayers and stake her claim as a major contender. But realistically....Serena has a much better shot, she knows how to handle the pressure of a major final and will have home court advantage with the crowd likely behind her. Hopefully this Final will salvage what has been a rather well....poor open to say the least.

It's nice to see a decent women's final for once. I thought for sure Jelena would be overwhelmed but she's holding her own quite nicely in her first slam final.

I had to laugh when she started complaining to the chair umpire about Serena taking too long to serve and then the crowd booed her. What is it with the serbs and putting their foot in their mouth? Where ever they go they get booed. :lol:

I gotta say, Serena takes her sweet ass time between long points. She should have been issued a warning before Jankovic spoke up, MULTIPLE times. Fitness is part of this game. She might be strong but she should not get extra recuperation time.

Jankovic definitely had her chances in both sets. I highly doubt this will be her last grand slam final.
