Venus has surpassed Serena

While Serena has two more grandslam titles, Venus has won 9 more overall titles. Venus also has won a Gold.

Had she not choked, Venus would have won the US Open, having choked to Serena. While Serena has often been more mentally tougher than Venus, it has been Venus that has improved more over the last six years.

Venus' serve is better than Serena's. Her returns are more consistent. She moves better and has maintained better fitness. She has also developed a better drop shot and ability to bring players into the net.

Overall, since Serena's 2002 US Open win, Venus has been more consistent (even when she struggled to get past QF's and SF's in tournaments.) And with her showing in this final Masters' event, she has outperformed her little sister for the third year in a row. In my opinion, it is Venus, not Serena, who is the greatest Williams. Thoughts??

No, No, No, and No.

I like Venus more then Serena but Serena's career is still head and shoulders superior.

For starters Venus has never had a stretch of dominance like Serena winning 4 straight slams, or winning 5 of 6 slams. The most she has ever won in a years span is 2.

Venus is not versatile across all surfaces nearly as much as Serena, which is the obvious reason for the above paragraph being impossible for her too. In Australia she has only 1 time past the quarters. At the French she only has 1 time past the quarters. Pretty meek showings at the 2 slow court slams for such an accomplished player. On one hand it is impressive Venus has all her slams at the big 2, but while having more slams at the big 2 is something generally in your favor, when it comes to the extent of eliminating all surface versatility as far as the slams it goes too far.

2 more slams is significant as well. That cant be ignored.

As for the U.S Open shame on Venus for listening to her father and purporsely losing at the end of the 1st and 2nd sets. Serena always has enough over her their careers, why on earth she agreed to a match fixed in Serena's favor is beyond me. That U.S Open should have been hers but she did what Papa wanted.

I agree. Some matches i felt venus gave it away. Maybe the French open cus Venus is better than Serena on clay. She may not have a slam but she has like 7 titles on clay. Serena only has like 3. TOTALLY AGREE WITH U ON THE US OPEN.

Had she not choked, Venus would have won the US Open.

Do you remember the Davenport-Venus Wimbledon final?

Venus and Serena have both benefited from choking by their opponents in their biggest matches and wins more times then I can even count:

1999 U.S Open final Serena vs Hingis- Hingis choking at end of 2nd set.

2000 U.S Open semis Venus vs Hingis- Hingis choking by not putting away an easy overhead that would have almost certainly given her the victory and eliminated Venus's potential Wimbledon/U.S Open/Olympic treble.

2000 U.S Open final Venus vs Davenport- Davenport completely chokes away the 1st set.

2001 Miami final Venus vs Capriati- Capriati chokes away a bushel of match points, most with simple errors.

2003 Australian Open semis Serena vs Clijsters- epic choke by Clijsters from 5-1 up in the 3rd.

2003 Wimbledon semis Venus vs Clijsters- Kim the culprit again, this time choking away a set, and many times up a break in the 2nd set lead, vs an injured Venus who cant even serve.

2005 Australian Open semis Serena vs Sharapova- Maria chokes away 3 set points with timid and scared tennis.

2005 Wimbledon final Davenport vs Venus- Lindsay chokes both at the end of the 2nd set, and with a shot to close it out in the 3rd.

2007 Australian Open Serena- This one is a long list. Petrova, Peer, Vaidsova in 1st set.

2007 Wimbledon Venus 3rd round- Venus played awful this day and some Japanese player I never heard of was outplaying and outhitting her, and gifted her the break back when serving for it with 3 easy errors.

They should both thank their lucky stars they are in an era of a bunch of wimpy women who have "no balls" in more ways then one. You would have never seen such a huge collection of nonsense in the 80s or 90s.

A agree with everything. I too like Venus better and a think a lot of people may want to vote for Venus on the basis that Serena pisses them off. But, Serena, in my opinion, is still above Venus career-wise.

I just don't get the match-fixing tinhats. As Grafrules pointed out, if matches were being fixed, wouldn't Papa Williams even it out? Serena leads in Slams head-to-head, including 5-2 in Slam finals.

how has Venus Surpassed Serena?? Serena has more slams and more weeks logged at the number one spot. She has a career and calender grand slam to her name. The only thing Venus has over her little sister is more Wimbledons and yeah she may have more overall titles but if Serena would play more tournaments between the majors and actually care about them I really doubt she'd even have that.

The OP Says Venus has been more consistant since the 2002 US Open then Serena...and Apart from Wimbledon where is this the case?? Serena has outperformed Venus overall at the majors in terms of variety of surfaces on which she has won(grass, us hardcourt, and whatever that stuff at the austrailian is called). Venus looks awful or inconsistant most of the year than come Wimbledon she turns into a one woman wrecking crew.

Apart from that Serena has overall maintained a higher ranking and higher level of consistancy....which given both the sisters seeming lack of commitment is not saying much but still. Serena has a winning head to head over Venus at the majors including beating her in what...5 straight grand slam finals they contested against each other?

Don't generalize this year either...Serena outperformed Venus this year in terms of titles won and ranking. Even if Venus hadn't given in to Serena at the US Open this year...there is no gaurantee she would have taken the title, although this year was probably her best shot at ever getting it again, there is no gaurantee Venus would have been able to beat Dinara and Jelena at that time as Serena did.

In the History of the game as of now, if both Women retired tomorrow, Serena would stand above Venus in History because apart from Wimbledon, Serena has achieved way more.

Forget Dinara. Dinara played absolutely pathetic, outrageously bad tennis vs Serena in the semis. Anyone in the top 20 who was playing half decent would have beaten her that day.

So with a virtual bye to the final over a truly pathetic Safina that leaves only Jankovic. Jankovic is a tough opponent for Venus, even moreso then Serena probably. However Venus gets up for bigger events, she was able to get up enough to battle past Jelena in 3 sets in the WTA championships, so I would thinks he would be able to get up enough to beat her in a U.S Open which is even a bigger event, and thus more likely for Venus to raise her game even more, then the WTA championships.

If pimp daddy richards evened it out, then it'd only be too obvious that the matches are fixed.

thats right,. papa tell venus to give serena to give her a serena slam to get to the greatest since venus seems to be winning a lot of matches and he might have though serena wont win enough. Now venus has to catch up.

I always felt Venus was the more suited to tennis, because of her height and better movement, almost even strokes, and a better serve

but Serena always had the heart of a champion

Talent will take you to the top

Heart and mental skill will give you the gold

Serena has the champions mentality which sets her a notch above all of his generations other leading women, especialy her two biggest rivals Venus and Henin. Henin is nervy in big matches, nowhere near as tough as Serena, despite her success. Venus is quite tough in general, but not when she plays Serena and that is when she needs to be most.

Take them together, add up their accomplishments and you have a monster player with over 70 titles and 16 majors.

But even having done that it's still not in the Steffi category.
