Venus vs. Serena - which is better?

I'm interested to see which one of the Williams sisters is better in the eyes of the regulars here. Here are my thoughts, by no means am I saying that I'm correct:

Forehand: This is a toughie. I'd originally say Serena, because it's a more consistent shot, however I think Venus' is more dangerous when it's on than Serena's.

Backhand: While Serena has a strong backhand, I'm going to go with Venus for this one.

Movement: I think Venus has more footspeed, but I think Serena has better footwork. It's a close call.

Power: While both have power games I'm giving the edge to Serena in this category

At-Net: Venus. Her height and wingspan make it difficult to get the ball past her.

Serve: Serena has a more consistent serve and usually serves more aces (I think?) than Venus, but Venus' serve is more powerful and deadly especially on grass.

Mental: Both are fighters, both are strong mentally, but I think Serena is more prone to meltdowns on court.

So what do you all think?

Serena with better footwork? Her footwork is terrible and has been commented on frequently through the years. Not that Venus' is good but it's definitely better. Also, Venus hits with more power but less spin and more erratic.

(overall, i think both sisters have forehands that tend to break down and both are actually a little better with their backhands)
serve: serena - more consistently effective, even if venus hits slightly faster

mental: serena - she is more emotional but seems to fight harder too

overall, i think venus is potentially better if she decides to play to her maximum ability. but she only turns it on at wimbledon. but serena brings the same competitiveness to almost every tournament she enters. so in terms of historic achievement, serena is better. the records speak for themselves. serena has won more different tournaments, achieved the career grand slam and been number one longer. venus has only won 2 of the 4 slams and had a very short stay at number one.

Forehand: Serena has more consistancy and variety

Backhand: Venus has better pace, consistancy and placement

Movement: Serena is a power mover while Venus has those long legs. Venus moves faster and better I think.

Net Game: Serena and Venus both have the swinging volley but Venus has better reach. Venus also has better technique on the traditional volley.

Serve: Serena has the better serve. Better consistancy, better 2nd serve, and better variety. Venus hits it harder on first serves though because of the height advantage.

Touch/Finesse: I think Serena has better touch and finesse. She hits drop shots more often with success. She hits the topspin lob off both sides while Venus NEVER hits a lob. Serena also slices occasionally.

Mental: Serena is more of a fighter but can get down on herself. Venus plays best tennis when down. Case and point: 2005 Wimbledon Finals.

BackHand: Neither is great...but Venus has a more consistant one, Serena's backhand is powerful, but the technique is sloppy and prone to falling apart...Venus on the backhand.

Net Game: Close...but for good reasons...when they are at net, they both volley pretty well...but Venus has the bigger wingspan and is more intimidating to try and pass when she is at net.

Serve: Venus-fastest in comptetion serve in history for the women....Serena may have more aces, but venus gets aces and draws tons of return errors.

Mental: Most Definitely Serena, outside of Wimbledon Serena has had more achievement and accomplishment and has had much bigger wins on a more consistant level than Venus. Look from french 02-aussie 03....both had the great game...Serena had the endurance and pulled them out

I disagree with your assessment on the backhands. Their backhand technique is nearly perfect. They get the racquet back SUPER fast and drive through the ball with good technique. Both have good technique on the backhands.

Serena uses the closed stance more often and occasionally uses the open stance. Venus exclusively uses the open stance.

I think Venus has a stronger work ethic than Serena but Serena is more talented than Venus.

If were not for Serena, Venus would be holding 10+ slams right now.

It doesnt matter which is better. If they meet in a big match Venus will do everything to lose nearly everytime (Wimbledon final this year was a rare exception), even if she has 9 or 10 set points (U.S Open match this year) Venus will miracelously find someway to give it to generously donate it to their little sister. That is why Serena will always be ahead in the final numbers, and one of many reasons people look at this era of womens tennis and simply laugh.

Both are about 40% the players they used to be, but can thank the current worst ever WTA field for still being two of the best out there. Anyway as their declines from when they were at their best are at an almost identical rate, how they compare is similar to how they would have compared back when they were great players too. I would say:

Forehand- Serena by a bit. Venus's can be more explosive but nowhere near as consistent.

Backhand- Venus by alot

First serve- about even.

Second serve- Serena by far

Return of serve- about even

Net game- Venus

Overall court coverage- Venus

Mental game- Serena by MILES, especialy when the play each other.

The mental game is what seperates the two, again especialy when they play each other even those times the matches were not staged beforehand like their U.S Open match.

serena of course lol...she always seem so angry when venus beats her where as venus is always so classy and loving to serena when serena beats her.. sometimes i think venus lost to serena because she felt sorry for her lil sis but this isnt always true and serena is the more consistent one.
