VOLKL C10 players

I am new to the Volkl line and found the C10 models to be confusing. I have read for the board about Gen 1 Gen 2 C10 series.

Any one care to clarify the different models of C10?

This is what I know....

> C10 Pro Tour 93 (Is there another version of the C10 Tour mid model? )
> C10 Pro 98 (Gen 1 and Gen 2? )

Reason I am asking: I had a hard time understanding which models the Volkl players on this board are talking about when they are discussing C10.

I just picked up a C10 Pro Tour 93 and is actively looking for a grommet set. I found one online (from another competition) but the pic shown is not the same as what on the racquet and the catalog has the grommet listed as C10 Pro Mid (I am not sure if this is the C10 Pro Tour mid or not). Display has a generic photo not the actual pic.
Example the buttom throat grommet on the C10 Pro Tour 93 comes in one piece of 8 grommets linked together - picture on the site shows a set of 6 grommets. I call the store to ask, the rep is clueless. Store does not accept return or exchange.

I played with the C10 Pro tour 93 yesterday. WOW - it plays amazing.

HELP!

i believe there is the C10 pro, C10 pro tour, and C10 pro extended. it could be that the other site put the wrong picture on there. seeing how the rep is clueless, i'd say it is quite possible that they don't know the difference so just posted a generic picture. you should ask them for pictures of the actual racquet.

suggest do a forum search to find out specifics... having said that and from what i recall about the C10 Pro 98 headsize, there is the fishscale version (gen 1), post fishscale version (gen 2) and the latest version (also gen 2) with a different pj. the other models of which you referred i have not had the pleasure to experience.

Don't forget the very first Volkl C10 which was called C10 Comp, came in mid and miplus.

Here the models i know:

1) C10 Comp mid and mid plus (93 & 102 sq)
2) C10 fishcale mid plus (98 sq and extended)
3) C10 post fishcale version, (mid, pro tour (93sq), mid plus (98sq), oversize (110sq.) and extended)
4) C10 black edition mid plus (98sq)

This is pretty much accurate. Most people on TW site seem to be talking about the standard C10 Pro. I agree with In D Zone about the C10 Pro Tour. I switched over to this racquet a number of years ago and have not gone back to anyting else. Well actually I am using the C10 Comp ( 93 sq in head also) as well as the C10 Pro Tour. Glad you like the C10 PT.

This is great info by Ericsson.

In D Zone,

You seem to have the third one in the pro tour (93 s.i. version).

Most people on the boards here talk about the C10 98 version, a rqcquet which is still produced albeit with another paintjob.

I have briefly played with the C10 98, and it's a very good racquet, however I believe the 93 s.i. might be the real gem, according to some posters. The C10 98 s.i., has a lot of flex and can feel a bit loosey goosey at times. I had it strung with full poly and it became much more control oriented. The C 10 93 s.i. is probably more controled stock and with any string because of the smaller headsize and what I recall from other posters it seems to be quite powerful too, giving it one of the most interesting combinations: power and control.

Great info! Thanks everyone for contributing.

It would be great if we can post some pics of these models.
I will post mine later.

Thanks, Dino.

For some reason, I had the impression that the Tour was much heavier -- like well over 360 grams.

What are the main differences between the Tour and the regular C10 Pro then?

Well, i never played the C10 Comp, i think that one saw the light in 1994.(note that the Comp was a 16x18 pattern)

With the Pro tour i had a brief hit on a Volkl demo, this is a very control oriented stick with very good power, extremely stable, something like the BB11SE but it's not for everyone, when you start to swing it you can feel there is some weight behind it, the very high SW makes it rock solid, SW was 344
it also plays a little firmer then the big brother IMO, especially in the hoop but nowhere near stiff, this is all about flexibility (RA 59). Great stick!

One of my all time favorite rackets is the Tour 10 generation 1, this frame is so sweet, so buttery, it has a big sweetspot, thin beamed, great head shape and very important there is room for customization with a stock weight of 320 grams and a SW of 319
The racket is also great to handle, perfect for longer matches.
the overal flex of the racket is perfect with a RA of 60, good firm hoop although the sweetspot is rather located near the throat of the racket, not as stable as the Pro Tour though due to the lower SW

the only downside (for me personal) is the 18x20 pattern, they should of kept the 16x19 but like i said this is rather personal.
Wonderful racket IMHO!

Good suggestion ProRacketeer! I think I have a DNX10 grommet in my stash - I'll check it.

Hopefully it will fit.

The DNX has the same string pattern, it might just fit. Keep us updated. It seems many people are looking for the grommets of these babies but they are hard to come by.

Guess what - it looks like we got a match.

Love that stick, have four of them now :) Just can't find the grommets for them :(

Soy,

I followed ProRacketeer's suggestion.... took out my spare DNX10 mid grommet and measured it against C10 Pro Tour 93. I even compared the two racquets side by side and on top of each other - the grommet pattern matched.
The BB11 mid grommet also looks like a match but one of the lower grommet seems a little off.

I think the DNX10 mid grommet is the better match of the two.

Since I'll be ordering an extra grommet for my BB11 , I'll get another DNX set for the C10.

Do newer grommets fit the C10 PT?
DNX 10 mid?
BB 11 mid?

THANKS ProRacketeer!

Matchmaker - here's the update. BTW - did the grommet fit for the RD7?

Haven't used the grommets yet, as the old ones are very worn, but still allow for stringing. I will try to get the most out of the old ones before installing the new ones, but they must fit, as they are the original grommets.

I think it is interesting to see how other grommets can match a racquet from the same manufacturer. Often manufacturer do not change the drilling patterns. I installed microgel CAPs on a PC600 and that was really easy.

It would be interesting to have a database here on talktennis about which grommets fit which racquets.

hey Mc, i'm actually using the c10 comp too, and i have to say that the stick works great. in this very moment, i like the Comp more than the C10 Pro 98, but i'm waiting to play with my new "old" frame, the Tour 10 generation 1.

Cesare, I'm glad you found one to play with. Those are very hard to find in good shape. I agree with you I like the C10 Comp and the C10 Pro Tour better than the C10 Pro itself. To me those two have a better feel and better control than the 98" head C10 Pro.
The C10 Comp and C10 Pro Tour both have the 93 sq in head. The ones I have feel similar but I seem to switch back and forth depending on whom I am playing at the time. I know, sounds strange but it works for me.

mctennis, how do the Pro Tour and the Comp compare?

Both have similar feel, power and control. Both have a 93 sq in head. I do like the feel of the C10 Comp when I play against players using a lot of spin. The C10 PT I use when I play against players using a lot more power. Strange, I know.

I liked the C10 Comp a lot better than the C10 Pro for several reasons. The play at the net was a lot better with the Comp. The head of the C10 Pro seemed wobbly and the C10 Comp was solid. The baseline is also where the C10 Comp shined. It had such pinpoint accuracy with the C10 Comp. There was no comparison at that point. I had to stay with the C10 Comp.

I recently picked up a C10 Pro Oversize at a second hand sports shop and I simply love it. Can anyone provide specs, and if there is a current model that plays similar? Also, I typically don't like playing with an oversize frame so if there a smaller head size, like a midplus, from Volkl that I should play test. Thanks

I would be interested, if someone could direct me to some 4 1/2" Volkl Grip Pallets...

McLovin - pallets for 4 1/2 are can be purchased at doittennis.com for like $15 a piece. Please let me know if you are still interested. I have some pics if you like to see them. :)

BTW, D zone I saw that you were trying to fit DNXmid grommets in your C10 mid. How did it go?

I was able to fit them but had to cut the top bumper guard in two in order to fit. I think putting that top bumper guard in hot water should also do the trick but I was too lazy for that.

Hey Volkl Pro guys... WHAT IF.. they made an extended 27.5 inch version of the PB93 ? This would effectively move the sweetspot a bit more down? Is it possible to manually go ahead and extend the handle of the racquet to experiment? Anyone ever do this.. what do you think will the affect of such a modification be to this racquet..

I'm searching for an extended 27.5 in long version of this raquet online and I am only able to come across a "C9 Extended" version (98in square head). Is this the only extended version in the series? or is there also some C10 extended version as well... thanks.

I'm pretty sure the C10 OS 110sqin was 27.5"

I have read for the board about Gen 1 Gen 2 C10 series.

Hi In D Zone -

What is confusing about the Volkl line up over the years is there are probably 50-60 frames with the number 10 in the name. There are several versions of the C-10 old / new paint job, but I've never heard any Volkl enthusiast refer to new paint job C-10 as the C-10 Gen II. Think maybe you are confusing the Volkl Tour 10 Gen I and Gen II, which are models within the tour series line, with the C-10, which is in the comp series line. I have some old screen grabs from the Volkl site circa 01-04. I might dig that up that if anybody is interested. It might help to get a bird's eye view of the separate racquets within each series of frames.

-Jack
