What the etiquette after the match in your area now (COVID-19 handshakes)

Played a tournament over the weekend and was expecting fist bumps but everyone was doing the regular handshakes, etc. I'm wondering if that's going to change in upcoming league matches and tournaments.

A fist bump is no better than a handshake.

You can always politely decline a handshake and keep a couple of metres from your opponent, but it’s pretty pointless when you’re both handling the same tennis balls all match.

Ankle, elbow, fist bump, shake, decline - whatever. Just avoid touching your face and wash your hands immediately after playing. If you hang around the Club for an adult beverage and some chips afterwards, practice same procedure and you’ll be fine.

I am thrilled with being able to avoid handshakes now!
I have never liked a handshake in any situation .... why should I have to touch other people due to a social construct? And a lot of people are really gross ... don't need to be touching them.

The hand shake first came about in a way to prove I don't have a weapon in my dominant hand (only to get shanked by a lefty!) .... it is well past its usefulness.

This past weekend in a 12 team dubs round robin tournament, saw at least 50% of folks refusing the handshake ... sometimes awkward.

Weirdly enough, we do the Wuhon ankle touch or elbow touch. Then we head off to the restrooms to wash our hands because of the tennis balls. Some species (see avatar) are not as susceptible. :happydevil:

Here's another thing to think about. What about all the sweat and stuff that gets on the balls and you're exchanging them back and forth for a few hours? Imagine playing against a Nadal type the touches their face, butt, drips sweat all over the place.

Yeah, you've pretty much made out with them by time the match is over. I don't think that shaking hands would be an issue.

if I am playing someone, I could care less I am shaking hands, high fiving, but I will draw the line swapping spit. Unless they are showing symptoms of an illness it is just ridiculous.
Good grief get over yourself people. Do some research.

And we need to put an end to all the hugging too.

It is not merely about the physical contact itself, it's about proximity. Getting close enough to someone to touch hands drastically increases the likelihood of droplet infection.

Should women (and men) be allowed to put balls into their clothing crevices like pockets and such other places?

The droplets are all over the ball now. What's the difference shaking hands vs passing the balls back and forth constantly?

elbow bump while doing the macarena,,,,,,

Tennis playing doctor friend said no elbow bumps because people sneeze or cough into their elbow. He said that fist bumps were better. But, people sneeze into their hands as well. So, I'd like to advocate the knee bump as a safer option. Just don't miss the mark.

We did racquet taps yesterday for our final match before our club closed things down for 30 days.

Social distancing requires 6 feet. No touching of any kind.

I don't give a flying _uck what people think when I decline a hand shake.
I did it before the COVID-19 outbreak and I'll do it when life returns to normal.

I don't do it to stop the transmission of viruses/bacteria (you get them when you touch the tennis balls as others have mentioned)
I do it because I can't stand getting someone's sweaty palm sweat all over my hands and racket grip!

Played a fun doubles match last night, so no contact at all, of course we all handled the tennis balls  A friend of mine suggested playing a singles match using two cans of balls, and only using your designated can when serving (handling) but that seems a little extreme to me.

Probably won't help since the virus can survive on the court surface and be taken up by the ball on the bounce. Just wash your hands after each set and avoid touching your face.

Couldn't you eliminate pretty much any threat of transmission on the tennis court if each player played with their own balls? So long as the other player doesn't handle them with anything other than their racket I'd think the risk is pretty minimal.

Peace sign or military salute from >ten feet away and thorough hand washing after regarding the tennis ball germs. If you’re offended I won’t elbow bump or fist bump you, so be it.

I haven’t shaken hands in years. Fist bump or nothing. I’m not holding anyone’s hand....have they been picking their nose? butt? Scratching their privates? No thanks.
