When do you change your tennis shoes?

The question arises not on how the shoe looks but in terms of its performance. For example, the rubber sole begins to wear off, is that just an initial wear or is it a sign that the shoe must be changed? In practical terms some people wear the shoe until a hole comes about. But, in terms of performance when is it time to change it in order to have a well balanced shoe that prevents one from developing an injury such as ankle twist, improper aligment, etc.??

I'm pretty sure that's all up to you to decide. If it doesn't feel comfortable anymore, then you should probably switch before you mess up your feet. But if you wore out the shoe to the point where you can see the insole, i think its time to switch. At that point you wouldn't have any cushion at the spot that has the hole.

Until either of the following happens:

1) They get a hole in them
2) The tread wears down and I slide all over the place on clay

In my case
1) when I see holes or midsoles
2) have knee pains (air max cracking for 4.3 or EVA form failing-barricade)
3) slipping from courts due to smooth rubbers.

Usually it happens between 8-12 months periods of time or 100-140 hrs.

It is a matter of personal opinion.

I change my shoes when the tread is too worn down and I slide too often, or there's a hole, or I feel the shoe has become unbalanced because of wear (usually under the big toe).

I've never had an issue with cushioning breaking down.

when there is no traction and they start to slide really bad, or when there is a hole. Right now I am playing with two shoes vapor 9 and barricade.

with the vapors it will be a whole
with the barricades it will be from loss of traction.

If I'm wearing barricades I wear them until most of the toe is the white midsole foam. Same for vapors but 2k tend to get really slippery on the bottom to the point where I can't use them anymore because I'll be changing direction and I'll fall down.

I change mine when

- I see rips/holes
- When it starts loosing its traction/grip and it starts getting slippery

After 2 months, they are worn to the midsole and I can easily send it in for warranty replacement. However, I try to get another month of use out of them. So at about the 3 month mark the cushioning starts to wear down and I send it in. They are Barricade 7's, Propulse 3's, and T22s.

After six months the cushioning breaks down and becomes flat. This usually happens before the outsole becomes worn down to the midsole. I switch every six months.

When I start wearing holes in socks, or when they start hurting my knees. Depends on the shoe as to which one starts first.

I buy 4 pairs at the start of the fall season every year wear each pair for 3 months no matter the wear and then switch to the new pair.

I will then keep 1 or 2 that are in the best condition and use them for nothing but practice...and eventually working in the yard shoes.

Just to be honest... should i get rid of him?

When the cushion starts to fade is when I switch them out which usually is about 3 months for the Vapor 9s. I noticed when you wear a new pair, the cushion is plush then after a few months, it starts to stiffen up which tells me time to replace them which is also when the shoe outsole wears out.

If money wasn't an issue, I would change them when they become uneven due to wear. I wear out the outer heel area very fast even on barricades. This happens a long time before I get any holes in the shoes. But realistically, I change shoes when any holes appear and i send them in for warranty.

On a side note, I think it's better to cycle through 2 pairs of shoes at the same time rather than use 1 pair at a time. 1 durable pair for practice/ training and 1 light weight/ high performance pair for matches usually works.
