Answer very clear

Clearly it is '06 Roger.

2010 roger and 2011 Roger had match points at the US Open against absolute Peak Djokovic. Hence, back up to 2006 when Roger was at his peak - it is clear that Roger is significantly better.

Fast HC- Fed
Slow HC- Djoko
Indoors- Fed

Agree with those and to the OP poll setup:

Offense- Federer
Defense- Djokovic

2006 was definitely not Federers best ever slow hard court tennis however. 2005 or 2007 Federer of slow hard courts it would be an even tougher call vs Djokovic there than the 2006 one.

I only started watching tennis at 2009.. But i watch a lot of old fed games in his peak... and damn, scorching inside-out forehand.. movement so subtle..

watched all the US Open fed played..it looks weird, the court was slowly getting slowed every year...

why, which hard court great did Fed have to play amazing to beat at their peak in 06?

Joko because he had to overcome tougher competition in 2011.

Well, so far not too many people voting for Fed all the way. A little surprise to me. I thought I am in minority to say Djoker is a better defender.

Props to the OP for making a poll with reasonable options rather than a just "who's better". Both have different strengths as players

Nole.

He dealt with Fed/Nadal all year on hard courts that year.

Who did Fed deal with on hard courts in 2006? Yea.. NO ONE. Oh thats right.. Crappy form Roddick and washed up injured Hewitt and Baghaditis and Kiefer

And I agree Federer 2006 had a slightly better game on HC's, but for people bringing up the argument of 2010 and 2011 matchpoints, remember that baby Djokovic also had 7 set points against prime Fed during the USO 2007.

It works both ways people...

Gamewise, it's Fed and quite frankly it's not close. HC tennis is primarily offensive tennis, so I have to question those who value defense over offense on a HC if they have a clue. Now it's another thing that the ATP slowed everything down but strictly speaking HC tennis is designed for shotmakers/offensive players.

Your post is debunked up above.

******* had match points both years during Novak's best. Come on now, use your brain. Surely Federer during his peak physical and mental condition would have beaten him.

Also no one can pick Djokovic for offense and stay straight faced? The guy needs 50 shots to hit winners come on. Federer pulls the trigger and the point is over irregardless of the opponent.

or that Roger didn't play anyone of his own caliber during his peak times...which is going down that famous road...

The thing is 2006 Federer was so good that he was kind of defense proof. Meaning two things. Firstly that Fed was playing so well that Nole's defensive skills were kind of irrelevant. And secondly Fed was playing so well offensively that he didn't need to play defense almost at all.

To me this is the correct answer to this question

Djokovic at his absolute best back in 2011 was probably a better defender than even Nadal for awhile, atleast on hard courts (and this poll is only about hard courts). It would be crazy to suggest even peak Federer is a better "defender" than 2011 Djokovic. Even planet TW has its limits to the Fed insanity.

But no limits to the Nadal insanity unfortunately.

Federer 2006 in offense and Djokovic 2011 in defense. Djokovic cannot match Federer's offensive shots but Djokovic is a great defensive player and can grind out a win against anyone. Some people mistake him for a pusher because of his defensiveness but he can also hit winners when his opponents give them a chance.

It doesn't matter if he had to play me in 2006. You are missing the point - which is that past peak Federer was pushing absolute peak Djokovic to match points when Federer was 30. So it makes obvious sense that when Federer was 25 - he was much stronger. His 2006 record of consistent high level throughout the year establishes that too.

This comment is more true on the grass court.

The last 3 winners of the USO Rafa, Djoker, and Andy are all defensive centric players.

You wanna know what makes even more obvious sense?

How about broken back 34 year old Agassi pushing PEAK Federer to the limit at USO04? It surely makes obvious sense that younger Agassi swipes peak Fed off the floor.

Or does this thing not work when it's against Fed?

Agassi was playing great tennis during that period. Better than alot of years in the 90's...Plus the wind really threw Federer off, Agassi is perhaps the best wind player ever.

I see your point though, at the USO 11 Federer was playing very well. Although peak Federer being up 2 sets to love would certainly close it out and not disappear in sets 3 and 4. He wouldn't tank a set to make a final push in the fifth. Which is basically what happened.

I'd take Roger overall but on the slower hardcourts Novak would give him hell, especially the AO. I'd say they split their meetings with a 6/4 advantage to Federer maybe.

The worst is the following year, 2005 Agassi 35 years old reaching the US open final (that says a lot about the field back then). Agassi taking a set to Federer and pushing him to a tie breaker in the 3rd.

No, I think you have a point. I think that Agassi in 1999-2000 form would have been stronger. i think he is underrated here.

The truth is you can't really base it on stuff like that. I mean in the 07 USO final, Novak squandered 5 set points in the first set and 2 in the second IIRC, and I could just as easily say that 2011 Novak wouldn't have done that.

I agree 06 Fed wouldn't lose a 2 sets to 0 lead, but how do we know 06 Fed would've even got to that position? Every match and opponent has different dynamics and 06 Fed was different to 2011 Fed obviously.

I reckon on slow HC, 2011 Joker wins because his defence was incredible that year and not just his ability to chase down every ball, but also to turn defence into offence from impossible positions.

On fast HC, I gotta give it to 06 Fed, his offence would be too much even for 2011 Novak defence.

So my guess is, it would be 50/50 between the 2 with Novak gaining his wins on slow HC and Fed gaining his on fast HC.

Comparing "matchpoints" to "setpoints"? Are you dense?!

The answer is Federer for the both who in his prime had the best defense to offense transition game EVER!.
