Will Federer become the winner of most slams in 08?

Will Roger break Pete's record in 08?

Federer will most likely finish 07 with 12 majors, needing only 2 more to tie Pete's record of 14. The question is not a matter of if but when. Will Roger break the record in 08?

lol I've seen stranger things happen man, we don't need a jynx now.

For the record though I see him surpassing it in 09'

Without mentioning Nadal and the French, who the hell would win the other 3 in 08 if not Roger?

No doubt he would be the favorite of USO, Wimby and AO, it's just that there are many strange things that can happen in the next year.
I'm just saying you never know..

I think so too. I just feel that if he's gonna get pushed at majors like he was pushed at Wimbledon '07, then I think he should treat '08 as a last-ditch attempt at the record before the collapse could potentially begin in '09.

As usual, it all depends on the competition - if the young guns miraculously fade away in the next 2 years, Fed will pocket his bonuses.

Basically I think breaking Sampras' record will be like an anti-climax to his career, the climax will be be a little after that (similar to Sampras).

i voted absolutely but thinking now, it may happen in 2009, because federer would have to win 3 slams again next year...WOW...actually, he could just do that, so i stand by my vote :)

i actually see djokovic standing in his way at both AO and USO next year. so i think dont think he will pass Pete next year. i think Novak will win one of those 2 next year.

what if he gets injured? hes been quiet lucky so far with the injuries. I dont think he ever pulled out of a grand slam with injuries. Last Slam he missed was 99 us open and 99 australian open both he failed to qualify.

i dont see injury being a potential problem in postpone the feat in 2008. competition would concern me more, most notably djokovic. as someone already said, i this novak being quite the force at the two hardcourt slams in the next years.

LOL! Collapse! Ha ha!

What if frogs start flying? The way he stays in shape (remember he's a MEN'S tennis pro, not women's) and manages his schedule, he should be ok.

He gets clipped here and there in 2 out of 3 matches - but on the 3 faster Slam surfaces no one has showed that they can seriously challenge him. So #15 should happen next year at the USO...

Djokovic could beat Federer in a best of 3 match, but i really don't see him beating Federer in a best of 5 match, especially his fitness is still a doubt. Djokovic didn't beat Federer easily even Federer was not playing his best, you could tell from his backhand, totally out of sorts.

US Open is still Federer to lose. =)

I'm going to reserve judgement till the end of this year.
We still have many months of tennis left to assess how everyone is doing or is likely to do next year.

Come on, guys! We're talking about Federer here. At the end of the day, Roger is still Roger. He'll win the U.S. Open and AT LEAST three slams next year. Who's going to stand in his way, besides Nadal at the French? And don't even say Djokovic. He's beaten Roger ONCE, and NOT IN A SLAM. Once Djokovic wins a slam, he can be included in the conversation, but until then, it's just Federer and Nadal, and I don't see Nadal taking two slams away from Federer next year.

yes, Federer is the favorite for the US Open, but stranger things have happened. I don't really see any other favorites other than those guys beating on each other.

While it would seem unlikely that Federer would slow down on winning slams, don't forget Sampras was about at this spot in his career and he slowed considerably. All it will take is an injury or two and Federer will struggle for a while like other mere mortals.

I'm just hoping we get some more interesting competitions and make it
more dramatic. Roger made it look so easy to get to 11 majors
maybe except AO of 2005 and Wimbledon of 2007.
I just hope to see some dramatic matches for next 5 or so....

I think it is pretty obvious that will happen. Mens tennis is developing a heated 3-way rivalry at the top between Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic; with Gasquet, Murray, maybe Baghdatis, soon to be trailing close behind the big 3.

Davydenko might still have something left, but he is a bit older and does not seem to have the nerves for big matches, and Roddick is still hanging close to the top, although he might have reached the limits of his game.

At this point, what really separates Federer from other young talents
is the serve, IMHO. Unless they are able to make some meaningful
improvements in returning Federer's serve, there won't be any
dramatic matches.

I also question the stance Roger had an easy time winning those majors with "no drama" even in the past. Lets look at his 11 majors:

Wimbledon 2003 - ok I agree here mostly.

Australian Open 2004 - 4 sets with Hewitt in the round of 16, losing the first set and in trouble early in the 2nd. 4 sets with Nalbandian in the quarters.

Wimbledon 2004 - tough quarterfinal with Hewitt, 4 sets, and Hewitt up a break in the 4th set at 2 sets to 1 Federer, with a chance to take it to 5 sets. Extremely tough 4 set final with Roddick, 1 set all and down a break midway through the 3rd set before coming back, then down alot of break points early in the 4th set, saving all before getting the break himself.

U.S Open 2004 - extremely tough 5 set quarterfinal with Agassi, which stretched over 2 days.

Wimbledon 2005 - ok I agree here.

U.S Open 2005 - pretty tough semifinal with Hewitt, and final with Agassi. Against Hewitt saved 5 or 6 set points in the 2nd set, before winning it, then losing the 3rd, and winning out in the 4th. In final with Agassi was at 1 set all, and down a break midway through the 3rd before coming back to win the 3rd, then cruise through the 4th.

Australian Open 2006 - very tough win. 5 sets with Haas in round of 16 (all Federer's fault this match got tough since he relaxed midway through but still a 5 setter). Very tough 4 set quarterfinal with Davydenko, which probably should have gone 5 sets. Very tough first 2 sets with Kiefer, splitting them, before crusing through 3rd and 4th sets for 4 set win. Very tough first 2 sets with Baghdatis, splitting them, before crusing through 3rd and 4th sets. Still 5 sets lost in final 4 matches.

Wimbledon 2006 - ok I agree mostly.

U.S Open 2006 - final with Roddick became tough. Lost 2nd set, to reach 1 set all, and saved a 0-40 break situation to go down a break early in 3rd set.

Australian Open 2007 - ok I agree.

Wimbledon 2007 - needless to say the final was no walk in the park.

So only 4 of his 11 slams were devoid of drama or tension IMO.

improvements in returning Federer's serve, there won't be any
dramatic matches.

Federer recently lost a final on clay to Nadal in 4 sets, took 5 sets to beat him in a final on grass; and recently lost a final on hard courts to Djokovic in 3sets. I dont see how you are disputing they are on a dramatic and competitive level with him right now. Plus he trails Nadal in the ATP race by 110 points to boot.

There wont be any dramatic matches? Federer has already lost twice to Nadal this year (yeah both on clay but still losses) and went 5 sets with him on grass. Against Djokovic in 3 matches, he has a 3 set win a best 2-of-3 and a 3 set loss in a best 2-of-3, only an easy win in the Australian Open when they met. So only 2 of his 7 matches with them have been undramatic wins if you put it that way.

Dont even bring up Gasquet or Murray yet since they still have more to go to prove they are at the same level as Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic.

If Nadal can improve his serve and serve reading, Wimbledon is a doubt for Fed. USO will have at least Novak to challenge Fed.
Think about losses of Fed recently. Young guns are learning how to do it and start performing it well.
Of course, you can say Fed is not near his best, but such claim is old like the earth.
In my point of view, Fed would be happy to win one GS in 08.

Complete how? He could not play defense very well. He couldn't hit a high backhand to save his life. Federer has won more titles on clay than Pete as well.

Well, that's what I've been thinking, theoretically.

But the conditions changed and you do not need much of net game
to be complete.

And Federer has so much of "intangible" and is a perfect power
baseliner in current slowed conditions.

So my prediction has been that Federer will maintain highest ever degree of
domination but probably end up with not the longest time of domination.
But actually I'm not sure if my prediction will turn out right.
