Murray played on clay during his teens, so he should be used to the surface, and his style of play suits the surface (smart tactics). So, will Murray ever win a clay title, and, if yes, where?

For what it's worth, I hear that Murray's second target for the year is to make the final @ RG. Thinks he can do some damage on the surface with a good back and Ivan in his corner.

The last time he was pain free on clay he had a pretty good season. I guess we'll soon see.

I think Murray has opted for the back surgery to make sure he won't be hindered next season's clay swing like he was in the last 18 months. If he got through to RG SF before then a F is not unrealistic.

After all, he has done what was thought previously impossible by winning at SW19 with all the pressure.

Of course. He'll win the 2015 RG championship with the
draw of:

R1: Darcis
R2: Rosol
R3: Lu
R4: Stakhovsky
QF: Istomin
SF: Lorenzi
F: Troicki
After losing the first two sets against Troicki of course.
It'll be a tournament for the ages. Although it'll be
a slightly harder draw than Wimbledon 2013.

The butthurt is strong in you Annie. Keep the tears coming. Murray played the world number 1 in the final to win his first Wimbledon - not some guy from outside the top 30.

Why should he win a clay title ? What is special about that ? He has wimbledon and USO, the top 2 titles in tennis world.

Well, he'll be doing a lot better than Nadal or Federer then, won't he? :)

I've never rated Murray's clay court skills. At max he can win a master but I still went for a 500 event.

Ray chickened out of clay season this year. He never
won a 250 clay title and never made a clay tournament
final. He's a mug on clay who can't hit with spin,
construct points, hit a good FH or slide correctly. He's
Radwanska of the men's game. His clay game is not
even top 20 material. He realized it, why can't his
fangirls too? may be sexual attraction?

I've been saying this for a whie: Murray is better ofon clay than his record dictates.

His 12 and 13 clay season have been marred by injury. He's absolutely good enough to win a clay masters, and make a FO final.

Yeah thanks for that kid. Do a lot of ad hom do you? I'll let this one slide as you sound really upset about the current Wimbledon champion.

You have a nice day now.

An,
Your very narrow minded points about a grand slam champion not being able to 'construct points' or have a 'good forehand' is not even worth addressing. There is no point arguing with narrow minded ignorance because ignorance always wins.

His recent run of clay results are deeply misleading with the back issues he has had, Murray gains nothing by pulling out of grand slams and losing points or not doing the job he gets paid to do. He was in pain and took surgery + pulled out of the rest of the *hardcourt* season to fix that long term issue.

There are many glimpses what Murray is able to do on clay - 2011 is a good example. Please try harder next time.

Murray is not a great clay courter, I think at this point he treats clay season like Roddick did. Don't expect anything from the Scot on dirt in the upcoming years.

Pretty much this. He certainly can play well on clay. I'd like to see more consistency from him when he plays on clay. He is prone to too much upsets at the moment.

Unlike Roddick who did jack at RG, Murray at least has been to the SF and had his chances against Rafa.

A Lendlized Murray with no back issues may surprise a few people on clay in 2014.

I think Rafa would be too good at RG in 2014. Murray might win in 2015 though. I think he wins 1 RG.

Murray's draw at FO 2011 was an absolute joke. And against Nadal, he got straight setted. That's not what I call "having chances".

Murray's biggest problem on clay is his flat style counterpunching style just doesn't work on the surface. One of the reasons Hewitt struggled at FO as well, despite being an excellent mover.

Murray had 18 break points in those 3 sets - more than Rafa had. Some people would call that 'having chances'.

Not against Nadal on clay it isnt. Federer in the 2006 and 2007 finals (and maybe even the 2005 semis) must have had like 25 break point chances. He even won a set in all those matches. Yet it never felt like he had a chance to win in any of them. If you watched those 3 matches I am sure you will understand what I mean.

Nadal will always have people getting into his serve games but he plays break points against him (especialy on clay) better than anyone and they are incredibly hard to win, and even when you win some of them, he can break you any service game on clay if he really wants to.

Whilst I accept that making and taking chances are two very different things, I don't accept that anyone who has had 18 BP opportunities in 3 sets can be reasonably said to have had no chance in the match.

Anyhoo, it's all just interesting fluff. Let's see Murray make a recovery from his injury on his good surfaces before worrying about the clay. Although I do find it interesting that RG is a major focus item for him this year.

Murray on clay is like a slightly worse version of Djokovic on grass. He's gonna need an extremely favorable draw to win a title. But he needs to make a final first.

I think that's an excellent analysis Tony - although Murray is much more deficient on clay than Nole is on grass IMO. Murray has plenty of room for improvement - the good news is he has just the right guy to help with those improvements.

Although interestingly he's got a better h2h against Novak on clay than Novak has against him on grass.

Sets won on grass:
Murray - Djokovic
5 - 0

Sets won on clay
Djokovic - Murray
4 - 1

sexual attraction disturbing your views. That's why you're saying Ray on clay slightly worse version of djokovic on grass. By your logic Wimbledon champion, 1 time RU, 2 time
semifinalist is slightly worse to Ray never reached clay final yet not 250 also.Though djokovic faced much tougher draw
than Ray at Wimbledon, you're saying he is worse on grass, lol.

OK - this is he second time you have used abuse (homophobic?) to make a point. I said I'd let the first one slide. Not this time.

If Murray had made final of an ATP 250 clay event then it would be truly amazing - given that he has never entered one in his career.

Retain Wimbledon.

The only problem I see with this is that Wimbledon comes right after the French. Difficult to prioritize getting to RG final as a second goal, when you first goal is yet to be attained and such short time between them. I don't know, just my way of seeing it.
