Nadal won his 45th straight match on clay Friday over Jarkko Nieminen.
Guillermo Villas holds the Open era record on clay with 53 consecutive wins in 1977. Bjorn Borg is second with 46 straight in 1979.

Will Nadal get to 54 and get the new record?​

Well, yes, yes as he drives in, he will pass right by the villas adjacent to the tournament site. Unless of course he takes the back way in.

Yeah, he'll top Guillermo Vilas in general. Don't know about the streak, though. I suppose it is possible. He would have to win Barca, Rome plus a few matches at RG. Entirely possible. Hope he does it and loses an epic final at Roland.

What record? Vilas' so called clay match record of 53 is very dubious. He won 50 matches in a row in 1977, between Wimbledon and Aix-Le-Provence, when Nastase forced him to retire with his dubious sphaghetti-racket. This was a clay-final. But the streak included 4 or 5 hard-court-tournaments. And Vilas was beaten by Borg at Nizza and Monte Carlo, just prior to the French Open that year. I think, the ATP is dreaming here.

Vilas' streak is really 76. Good for Nadal, but no one really beat Vilas for 76 straight matches on clay.

Nasatse used an illegal racquet vs Vilas in '77. Vilas quit in disgust, ending the streak. The racquet was banned the following week. Nasty's win over Vilas should not count, like a walkover or a no-contest in boxing.
