WTA has been carrying the sport since 2018.

After Fed came back, it was all about the slam race. Most of us are delusional Fed, Djoker, or Rafa fans living vicariously through them. We are not tennis experts who understand the game to the point where "good tennis" is a priority over our player winning. We want our player to win. So imo, ATP has still been carrying the sport, because most of us are focused on the slam race. (Also now maybe the new guys are stepping up)

Though, I guess this comes down to where the money comes from, which I don't know.

Yes.

There's some baseline bashing in the WTA, too, but some people have variety in their game. Good stuff.

Pretty weird flex considering the men’s final had 97 points at net and the women’s 28. Even adjusting for 5 sets vs 3 that’s half the rate. Baseline bashers gonna bash though.

I'm a big WTA fan and even I think that's a bold statement to make. I think everyone's opinion of what's valuable and not valuable is subjective. Some look at the WTA and think it's garbage tennis, while I see incredible athleticism displayed by these ladies every time they set foot on the courts. I will always prefer the WTA over ATP, but I still think the ATP offers very memorable matches even without Fed or the other two.

I’ll note the OP did not provide any revenue numbers to back their rather far-fetched claim, which is probably just sexist trolling.

Last I checked the women’s revenue did not stack up anywhere near the men unless Serena was making a deep run at an American tournament, and/or where the USO men’s final is stacked up against the NFL opening weekend. They should probably ask her nicely to stick around and hope somebody else picks up the mantle before she retires (I’m not sure a Japanese citizen in Osaka is the answer).

As the male game devolves further into negative baseline bashing, I find myself enjoying WTA more than ever.

If Henin made a comeback (I know she can't), I'd probably not watch ATP at all.
I wonder what Graf could do right now if she trained. I'm sure there are a few scrubs on tour she could beat.

Yeah the novelty of the WTA don't run just stand there and yeet is amazing.
Man you really don’t watch the WTA if you think they just stand there and do nothing. Vika and Osaka were running all around in that final. Obviously not as much as the men but please educate yourself, if only to not make you look like a fool.
He didn't say the WTA just stand there doing nothing. He said they just stand there and yeet the ball.

I’m a fan of the WTA too. The matches are shorter and there are no really dominant figures. I also enjoy watching Serena’s tantrums.

Once the novelty of Federer's comeback wore off the WTA has more often had the most entertaining matches, variety of skill, and players trying to win.

Idk man, Nadalovic played one of the greatest matches of their rivalry at Wimbledon 2018. And last year, yeah, the lost match points was crushing for Fed fans but the match itself was great.

I had to recheck the OP's name - I thought its a typical troll thread from you know who (Aus...rcy). Please provide any evidence for such sweeping claims (I would also ask for evidence if some other poster mentioned it is ATP that is carrying the sport)

Keep calm. The Fearsome Four are going to rock the sport!
Mad Med, Big Zed, Stefanos and the Thieminator are going to bring down the Big 3!

So, judging a general statement on play styles on tour on the basis of two matches? Hmm....

Frankly, those stats aren't surprising given how those particular players play.

Zverev isn't a serve and volleyer, but he does come in more than many. Theim, not so much.

Vika prefers playing from the baseline, though is capable of all-court play. You practically have to drag Osaka to the net, frankly, I think she'd rather not be there.

So, all in all, exactly what I'd expect between those particular 4 players.

I agree that womens tennis has been much more interesting for like 2 years time. Maybe only Wimbledon semis in 19 and Thiem Djokovic at RG were better but still.

Shame on you for introducing actual facts into a discussion; especially one about ATP vs WTA. You should be DQ'd for being too good.

The men's match in question had the two best young players in the game under 30 and the women's match had the best one. And it was the two finals of a Slam. So the stats from them carry a lot of weight. Plus, there's plenty of other attacking young male players out there.

Picking one pair of players in one match to draw conclusions about the play of the entire tour is misleading.

You could pick a match in, say 1990 between Agassi and Lendl (or say Courier) on hard court and draw the conclusion that everyone was playing from the baseline, as the stats would almost certainly bear that out. Or conversely, watch Becker and Edberg play and assume that everyone served and volleyed.

The WTA has been awful since the 00s the ATP is just now catching up.
The WTA has been an unwatchable mugfest since the female GOAT retired.

WTA has gotten far better since they stopped all the screaming after every shot. Still some old schoolers like Serena and Azarenka that have to shriek after their shots, but the new school ladies are much quieter and hence easier on the ears to watch.

I enjoyed every bit of the women's USO final and was more bored and frustrated by the men's final. While I like the concept of a 5 set match, actually sitting on the couch for that long is bum numbing.

Both tours are in huge trouble.
Neither one really has the market their organisations seem to think is possible.
People are just not that interested in tennis.

I am not arguing. I'd love to see the cumulative stats for, let's say, 15 top tournaments so we can really see what is what. It's hard to extrapolate anything from a single match but it's still better than nothing.

I agree, that would be interesting.

Plenty? Can you name more than 10? Of course not.

What about 5 who play attacking all court tennis and are under .. let's make it easy .. 30!
Tsitsipas, Shapo for starters. Who's got the other 3?

It's not a group project. I could round out 5, but if you have to ask for help it's not easy.
Kyrgios, that's all I got. Tsitsipas, Shapo, and Kyrgios. I'm haven't watched enough of Sinner. No one else approaches the net very often under 30. Maybe Raonic is considered all-court. And then there's Khachanov. But if you're gonna start calling Khachanov all-court then you might as well start throwing all the other baseliner's names in there.

I wouldn't have included Kyrgios, but desperate times call for some latitude. Sinner does have potential. Raonic is a servebot and almost 30. Khachanov is a baseline basher. You're at a very dubious 4, got one more? Should I offer a prize for 10?

With 9 women born in the 1990s with a slam (compared to one for the men), at least they've maintained a normal order.

I know what I said about desperate times, but now you're just being silly.

We should probably stop before it gets absurd.

Call Dimitrov young and we're done .. unless someone wants to go for 10 :-D :-D :-D
Krajinovic plays all court attacking tennis though, so we're up to 6 including Dimitrov. 4 more and I win the $1500 you were talking about.

I've only seen him play a few times, but he's never brought it out. Just checked, he's as old as Dimitrov!

You can't even find a genuine 6 (with help), time to give up.
