WTA week of 6/20; Eastbourne 500 & Bad Homburg 250

I haven't seen either of her matches but Kerber seems to be playing very well in Bad Homburg (what a name).

Beat a Russian qualifier 6-1 6-1 in the 1R and then beat Blinkova 6-0 6-2. Let's see how she goes against Anisimova.

Easy to forget that Kerber won Wimbledon just 3 years ago. She hasn't made a slam QF since then but she's one of the players who can show up and play insane out of nowhere.

I appreciate Kasatkina is in good form and it'd be nice to see her win here after being RU in B'ham, but I do wonder how beneficial it is for most players to be playing deep in a tournament right in the lead-up to a slam. The grass season is super short this year so some may feel forced to play this week, but we will see where the players who make it deep here especially W and RU get in the Wimbledon main draw. For Swiatek to lose 0 and 1 I do wonder whether her heart was there to fight to make it further in this tournament or whether she just wants to get to Wimbledon to settle as there are only 4 days to go.

One thing one might keep in mind when it comes to Swiatek and grass is that this was only her 8th tour-level match on grass in her entire career. She is 4-4 on grass.

Saba-Giorgi is actually a great match if anyone is watching. Giorgi hits the ball really, really hard for a small frame and pulls the trigger nearly as early as Sabalenka does.

It's a weird but entertaining ball-bashing fest.

Sabalenka keeps hitting easy shots into the net. BP Giorgi.

And a pathetic error from Sabalenka gifts Giorgi the break and she'll serve for the win.

Ostapenko is doing the same now. An illusion given the varying bounces on grass? I am watching and cannot believe she's a regular tour player - all or nothing even when she's hot 3-4 in the net/out in the space of a few minutes. That screams that strategy needs adapting otherwise it'll be a quick hello-goodbye in this tie.

I actually think Kasatkina's spin game and variety of shots is a much better choice on grass. Maybe Ostapenko will just continue with what won her RG and hope she has a fortnight like that again over a slam.

Kasatkina the only player left to have won a Premier/500 title. Ostapenko of course does have a slam while Kontaveit made a 500 final that didn't get played due to Covid earlier this year.

Looks like rain got the Homburg matches today, they’ll be doubling up. No wonder Vika quit.

Absurd to me that the SF's of a 250 tournament include 2x slam champ Kvitova v 3x slam champ Kerber and Siniakova v Sorribes Tormo while Eastbourne which is a WTA500 is Giorgi v Kontaveit and Ostapenko v Rybakina.

Kontaveit living dangerously in these service games. Has faced a lot of break chances, and more coming while serving for the set.

Giorgi has been fast around the court though and is slapping the ball well at times.

Giorgi retiring from the match after breaking back. Odd

Edit: Something about not being able to move despite flying around the court. Although i understand that she probably wants to save herself for Wimbledon.

Double Edit: and my bet got voided...why didn't Giorgi just tank the last game of the set...

Had a brief hiccup in the first set going 3-0 to 3-3, but was an easy one for Ostapenko it turns out. Still a little annoyed about this Kontaveit match since I would have been 3/3 today with Kerber and Osta winning, but what can you do.

I think I'd give the edge to Ostapenko in the final tbh. To me it seems like she has been hitting with more margin, but the serve remains attackable. I just don't know if Kontaveit will exploit that or not.

So Tennis Channel has decided to show Querrey vs. Mannarino rather than Kvitova vs. Kerber, who have 5 slams between them. What?

Nice to see Ostapenko finally not spraying balls right and left but playing with some margin. Did she finally fire her mother and got a new coach?

Kerber completes the crazy comeback too. Down a break in the 2nd and multiple times again in the third.

Thought about tossing a few bucks at her when she was down the break in the 2nd but had break back chances. Was +490 at the time but didn't commit. Oh well, good win for her. Came back from down a set in both of her matches today. She was totally in control after the first set against Anisimova though. With Kerber it could have gone either way.

Kvitova hasn't been the same since the stabbing.
Unfortunately, she seems to have a really hard time closing out matches and her service isn't as powerful a weapon as it used to be.

Nah, I just think it's that week/fortnight of the year (or every 2 or 3 years) where everything lands in for her and she seems like the greatest player of all time.
Before sinking back into obscurity.

Ostapenko v Kontaveit will be interesting.
I am so intrigued to see who takes this Wimbledon title.
You have former champs like Kerber and Kvitova going in with a fair few wins this week, so some momentum going into the Championships.
Ostapenko and Kasatkina looking to return to the heights of their breakthroughs a few years ago. Ostapenko hunting a 2nd Slam to back up RG, and Kasatkina looking to meet the expectations people had of her a few years back.
Players like Kontaveit, Jabeur and Rybakina are looking to go deep and make it deep or even deeper in a slam. I'm also intrigued to see Badosa as she played Svitolina hard last week, so it'll be interesting to see if grass suits her big game, especially as she's likely not on the tip of many pundits' tongues given the clay is behind us.
Barty, Andreescu and Swiatek are held in such high esteem and are looking for Slam #2. For many it's not a case of if, but when for these 3. I wonder if any will be able to play their way into the draw? I'm also excited to see what Gauff can do, if she's ready to win a slam yet as I feel she is bringing real form this year and all it takes is some luck and belief and maybe we will be surprised. I feel she may be a favourite at slams in a few years but perhaps people just expecting R4 or QF could help her stay below the radar for now.

Obscurity not really. The GS title is her passport to eternity

Angie Kerber wins her first title in 3 years.

Great week by Kerber who has been having a mediocre year.

A champion at Wimbledon in 2018, winning a grass title the week before is good considering how wide open the field is.

She is set to face Serena in the 3R in a rematch of said 2018 Wimbledon final.

Well well well... Who would have thought it. Title Ws for Ostapenko and Kerber.
I watched the 1st set of Ostapenko v Kasatkina the other day and was appalled by her play, so well done to her for turning it around from there, that has spurred her on to take the title.
So we have a huge hitter and a crafty counter-puncher in-form before Wimbledon starts - that certainly makes things more interesting. Also, Kontaveit and Siniakova have had decent weeks so I'm sure they'll look the push on next week too.

Angie Kerber finally.....won another tournament and in her own native country Germany! That was a big shock! She actually lives in Poland, however. Congrats to Kerber!:giggle:(y)
