Cornet takes out Muguruza 7-6 in the 3rd set tiebreak.

Alize is into the SF.

Cornet failed on 5 MP's but delivers to get the win.

Cornet has never won a title above an international.

Looking to do it here in Berlin at a Premier/500 tournament.

Into the SF where she'll play #5 Bencic.

Cornet with her quarterfinal win over Muguruza, will save her from playing qualifying rounds in future WTA tournaments! Cornet going a whopping 185 WTA points.

Coco Vandeweghe on court and the commentators are going overtime in praising Vandeweghe! Her injuries supposedly why her ranking fall and never mention her current ranking of 203 and 29 year old. She is 6’ 1”. Vandeweghe is in 2021 Wimbledon MD!

I only caught a brief but of Samsonova during the Keys match and didn't see much that really wowed me, but then she went and destroyed Azarenka...

Samsonova (#105 pre-tournament, #63 now) had a very impressive run. Had to play 7 matches to win the Final since she was a Qualifier. Along the way to the Win beating
Q2: Ana Konjuh (#129, ex-#20)
R32: Vondroušová (#40, ex-#14)
R16: Kudermetova (#32, ex-#28)
QF: M. Keys (#26, ex-#7)
SF: Azarenka (#14, ex-#1)
F: Bencic (#11, ex-#4)
Power hitter, big serve. This is the first time I've seen her match.

I watched 3 of her matches this week.
Got a few Sharapova vibes from her: concentration, intensity and self-belief.

You're probably right about that observation.

I didn't watch the whole match, but heard the commentators mentioning something about Sharapova. Not sure if it was just a comment from the commentator or something that Samsonova had said herself (that she sees Sharapova as a role model for those things). I just checked ... Her WTA profile says "Idolizes Maria Sharapova".

When I see her play, it reminds me of other match-toughened players that go through the grind of weekly ITF Circuit/Challenger players. She played with a lot of grit, tenacity and determination.

She was playing a W25 ITF Tournament as recent as early June and losing in the QF against #286 Frederica di Sarra.

Happy to see players break out from the ITF circuit to the WTA.
